Sith Warrior Class revealed in Gamespot Q&A

The new Sith Warrior class has been revealed by Bioware and Gamespot in this new Q&A:

GameSpot: Our next profession to discuss is the Sith Warrior, which we believe was shown at this year's E3. Give us an overview of this class.

James Ohlen: At E3, we did show off a Sith, and today, we are revealing that the Sith that was shown at E3 was specifically the Sith Warrior. Darth Vader was the primary inspiration for the this character class. The Sith Warrior is a heavily armored Force user driven by darkness and rage. He depends more on overpowering his opponents with martial skills than Force powers but often uses iconic powers, such as [the] Force choke. His story revolves around hunting down and crushing the enemies of the Empire, though sometimes, he is given the task of corrupting--rather than destroying--an enemy.

They now have their own section in the class forums. http://www.swtor.com/community/forumdisplay.php?f=45

Ouch, this might kill my dream of the Sith as a soul class of it's own with split trees to follow certain disciplines, ala Sith Counsular or force power user...w/e else it's supposed to be called.

What I mean is, I was expecting the Sith to have trees that let you focus on being a tank or dps melee or dps ranged (force lightning/storm).

Them putting Sith Warrior into it's own section mean what I was expecting to happen, didn't and most likely won't now.

Maybe they'll keep Sith with just the Sith Warrior class, with Jedi having the Force-heavy class. It would keep them "similar but distinct", like they did with Smugglers/Bounty Hunters. I'd see too much mirrored storyline in 2 classes that are basically 2 sides of the same coin, split into 2 coins with only 1 side each. What would be the storyline differences between a Sith Warrior and a Sith Consular, for example?

The Sith who use the Force are usually very advanced. Palpatine was probably a basical Warrior for most of his early career, only hitting advanced Force powers later in his life. In a sense, maybe Sith Warrior would get a Force-using class as a prestige class for higher level. Possibly work it like Mass Effect, where Shepard gets a choice from 1 of 2 advanced classes(depending on his starting class) after doing a specific sidequest. It would make each class interesting, and has been done in MMOs before(Tabula Rasa did it).

This class feels a lot like Anakin in the Clone Wars series. He often jumps in front of blaster fire to protect the troopers, and will dish out the DPS when the time is right.

No need to have a "sith consular" or anything of the sort. This way, they can balance out the classic offensive force powers by limiting them , otherwise the suspension of disbelief (within canon), would be shattered by the need to balance a class that relies mostly/entirely on incredibly strong force powers. Think about it this way: The true "sith lords" who are strong in the force are *not* plentiful enough to be on the front lines on a regular basis. As a "Sith warrior" (The obvious parallel to a "Jedi Knight"), you are far more "disposable".

This idea works for me as well. ALL SITH LORDS ARE ACCOMPLISHED SWORDMEN. Lets not Palps cut down 3 master swordmen jedi in a flash and fought mace windu and yoda to a draw.

So the idea of everyone starting off as sith warriors and jedi knights, then allowing a prestige class for a more caster type build is A-OK with me. Creates some interesting story arcs imho. One guy picks a consular, another guy picks weapon master. One guy becomes a Palps or Yoda, while one guy becomes a Maul, Windu perhaps.

Well, part of my thoughts on this is that all the classes so far are obvious archetypes in Star Wars, easily summed up as a single character. We've got Han Solo, Boba Fett, Darth Vader, and, well, Trooper is just generic, but still iconic. I really can't think of other exciting and iconic classes outside of the force based classes. This is really what makes me think there will be 2 force classes per faction.

The thing that also bothers me, is that the thing that stands out in my mind the most for the remaining, non-force Sith class, is also Trooper. That just seems like such a rehash of Republic Troopers, but yet, if they didn't have a standard soldier class like Troopers, a grunt class of sorts, for Sith, it wouldn't seem right either. There are all those Sith soldiers running around in KOTOR, and not to mention Stormtroopers. But a 2nd Trooper reveal would be so very meh.

My pick for the final Sith class is the Assassin Droid, a heroised version of the Trade Federation battle droids.

I still think an officer class is my preference. Sure, all they're iconic for is getting choked to death by Vader, but I'd roll one the second I launch the game.

I agree that revealing a 2nd trooper class would be meh but it would be the class I would play so I would definitely be excited for that announcement.

The QA refers to this Sith Warrior as a 'profession'. Why the difference in nomenclature? Sort of makes me feel the warrior may maybe a branch or sublet of the broader Sith force using class.

It all depends on the game you played. In SWG it was called a profession while in WoW it is class.

Yes that's true but they've also been referring to them as classes as well so the meaning is muddied. Even on the site they refer to them as classes not professions so if it means the same thing as a class then the developer misspoke.

It's a possibility, just not sure if we can really say just yet but it is interesting the way they refer to it.

So if the Sith Warrior is a class of it's own, surely they will have a Sith Consular ... then that's two force users! :( I don't like the sound of this much ... I was thinking that there would be one Sith class that could branch off into Warrior/Consular/whatever is in between.

Comment by Sedit made on August 19th, 2009 at 5:24am
If there were a Sith Consular, I would have to rehtink starting out as a Bounty hunter. Sith Consular is what I played KotOR as; it was too much fun not too ;)

As for the branching system you mention, I originally thought that was the path BioWare was taking with the Jedi/Sith. We are going to need more information to know for sure, but in the mean time I support this line of thinking as it makes the most sense coming from past BioWare games.

Yea, is he more of a warrior like in World of Warcraft, or is it more like a Jedi Guardian counterpart.

After reading some more sounds like he may be more in the line of a mix of the two. He gets the force powers, so that makes him similar to a Guardian. As for being like WoW this quote fills in the spot

"Depending on whether players develop their characters toward pure damage or toward a balanced offense and defense, a warrior can go toe-to-toe against the strongest enemy in the room or take apart a whole mob of lesser foes. "

It suggests he is a "Tank" and it also shows there will be some form of talent trees.

Yeah that part is a bit interesting mainly for the fact that they called the class a rogue type class last time.

Comment by Zoidberg made on August 18th, 2009 at 8:07pm
I think the rogue type class comes in because of the way you build up points for powerful moves.

Or feats.

Yeah seems like they've basically in a round about way confirmed talent points.

Based on their comments, it can be either a tankish or a Dpsish class, although it will generally do a bit of both. That is: Dual wielders will be heavy damage dealers while Single saber wielders have more defensive abilities.

Does this indicate two force-using classes on the Sith side? The warrior, and maybe something more like a consular? Sounds like it. What about on the republic side?

Comment by Zioni made on August 19th, 2009 at 3:51pm
This imho is good news, if it means the 3rd and 4th classes on the republic side are force users, and not a lame politician type like Leia or Padme (although Leia in the more recent EU is pretty badass)

Comment by sado made on August 19th, 2009 at 3:56pm
Lets just say I hope that is not the case. I would find it rather lame if there were multiples of the jedi/sith (force using) classes.

Comment by DirectX made on August 19th, 2009 at 8:25pm
I also would like to see more variety.

Comment by DirectX made on August 19th, 2009 at 8:24pm
2 on each side = 4 force classes?! How would they keep the story interesting for each class?

Comment by keroko made on August 18th, 2009 at 8:42pm
Definitely opens that posibility. Here we have the Vader icon. The other would be the less armored, robe wearing, mainly force wielding Palpatine icon.

Comment by Axlotl made on August 18th, 2009 at 8:47pm
I'd put money down on this being correct. Melee and Force based Sith Force using classes. The Consular and the Guardian, if you will.

Id be willing to bet on that as well or at least that they would be different talent builds.

Sounds like it or at the least classes coming in later expansions like that.

Seems like it's just the sith they showed in the prior video documentary. Either way it's nice to see more said about the way the character will work in game.
