Discussion: RPG vs MMORPG

There is an issue floating around thats been on the back-burner since SW:TOR was announced, but it seems to be gaining steam following the recent release of in-game footage. (Even warranting a mention by developers at GamesCom in Germany) Its a debate that has the ability to be quite polarizing, but it has me both confused and perplexed so thats where YOU come in.

Why do so many people wish SW:TOR was going to be a single player RPG? The question is simple enough, but Im not sure the answer will be so easily discovered. On one side you have the MMO enthusiasts salivating at the thought of complete immersion in the Star Wars universe and potentially years of story updates and a plethora of other game additions/modifications. On the other side you have a seemingly growing number of people who just wish they could come home from work, flop down onto the couch/computer chair and throw in KOTOR 3.

This just doesnt compute.

I can understand peoples apprehension towards the possibility of doling out 15 dollars per month to play a game theyve already purchased, but if we can just look past that does anyone actually think a single-player RPG will render a more exciting experience than an MMO?

Im doing my best to look at this from both sides of the argument, but Im having a hard time figuring out why anyone would prefer a limited experience with a definite ending as opposed to a nearly infinite experience with an ongoing story and ever-changing world.

My hope is that someone can point out the err in my ways and tell me why KOTOR 3 would make more sense than SW:TOR. But if you're happy BioWare's latest jump into the Star Wars IP is an MMO feel free to point that out.

I loved KOTOR 1 and 2 way, way more than I have ever loved WoW.

I think a lot of RPG ppl are intimidated by MMOs. MMOs are deep and complex, and then there is the whole social dynamic of being forced to interact with others. Sure you can solo, but some of my most hardcore gamer friends have tried out multiple MMOs and they enjoy them enough right up until the first time they have to group with ppl they dont know or go on an organized raid. I think a lot of ppl just dont feel comfortable playing a game where they have to interact socially with ppl they don't know.

Personally, I think BioWare is strong enough that whether the game goes Guild Warsy or WoWy, the story will be strong enough to fill the gaps and keep players interested. Guild Wars was wack because the gameplay was lackluster and the storylines/quests were mehhhh at best. I'm really not that worried anymore. As soon as BioWare said the UI would be open to mods I decided that BioWare gets it and they would make this a proper MMO.

I don't really get why so many people jump to conclusions, when there is still little info. The demo showed me a pretty big open area with showing Hutta, Korriban and Ord Mantel. It's a demo, of course there won't be tons of players running around. The demo also had colored doorways, which a lot of people think are instances so to speak. One thing I noticed was no loading time. I thought it was cool if that is the case. You run in, do your cut scene, and you don't have to worry about people bothering you, running around jumping like an idiot in your cut scene.

Also, people need to really remember what Bioware is about, and what their games are about. Yes, this is an MMO, but Bioware = story. It's going to be part of the game, we know that. I say this a lot on the SW:TOR forums, but Bioware does not have to go after traditional MMO players. This will not be a WoW Killer, because they don't have to go after that player base. They have a large following of fans already. What I see them as trying to do, is bridging that gap for people who really enjoy RPGs, but don't want to jump into MMOs, be it the monthly fees, lack of story, etc.. They are opening the genre to a whole new market. I really think people who enjoy the WoW style of play, are going to be disappointed with this game, because it's going to be very different. But people who are open minded, and enjoy RPG and story, will really enjoy it.

They have said we will have all the MMO type stuff, and I believe them. We will have open worlds in which we will see other players and interact with them. I viewed the flashpoint as simply an instance/dungeon.

EA wants a hit...they have yet to claim their piece of the MMO pie really. Warhammer was a total flop...they want millions of subscribers, and the way of doing that is making it more casual...making it so if people want, they can come home from work, flop down onto the couch/computer chair and throw in KOTOR 3. But you can also come home from work, flop down, and throw in SW:TOR, the MMO.

You know the more and more I see this, the more I am getting worried.. SERIOUSLY.. This BETTER not be KoToR 3 dang it... I want WOW but with Star Wars... I want what SWG SHOULD have been until the devs screwed it up..

It's still so far off and at this point all of this is speculation on what they have currently shown. We have yet to see it running with more than 2 players on screen at once so I am not sure we can really say one way or another yet.

DH, if you are right about the similarity with this game and GW it will ultimately fail. By that I mean failing to reach high popularity for a long period of time, instead of becoming a small-mid sized game that has mean dedicated players but never really got where it should have. (All the post-WoW MMO's have been the latter sadly)

Do not get me wrong, I would LOVE to see this game succeed (as both a Star Wars fan from birth and a burnt out WoW player).

IMO the reason those people would want KotOR: 3 is for likely 2 reasons.
1) They want something definite to feel accomplished (I've been going through my old rpg's that I never got around to beaten and it is really much more enjoyable knowing I have completed something).
2) They may not want to get addicted, or tied down etc. (This is more speculation) You play a RPG for an hour or two and you can shut it off and go on about your business without any false sense of commitment. You log on an MMO and make friends, your 'friends' have you play the game longer then you would expect. You have fun, you don't feel bad about it, but people maybe afraid of that happening.

-2's MMO scenario is rather complicated, true (Happened to myself) and a bit over-exaggerated. But do not just chalk it up as the latter please. To just give the idea of it, "They are afraid to say 'I play an MMO' ".

Bah I'm not to sure, Between Cataclysm announcements and the SW:ToR gameplay video my brain is being overclocked.

I think one reason some people want this to be a RPG vs MMORPG is because MMO players can be jerks. No all of us but we do have some in our community. The ones that cause you to have to use the ignore feature in chat or the ones that think they know everything about the game and love to let you know they do via voice chat, or the ones that run quest just to level and not to experience the story.

These are things some people do not want to deal with and do not have to deal with in a RPG but as a MMO gamer, these are only minor things compared to all fun one can have playing a MMO with real-life friends, guildmates, or complete strangers.

I'm not sure on the details of TOR, but WoW's UI is incredibly moddable using LUA. I hope TOR features similar functionality.

They have actually mentioned it in an interview with Goha.ru that you can find in our GamesCom coverage in the right hand corner of the site.

Here's a couple issues (for me) with having the TOR replacing KOTOR3...

-Modding on KOTOR 1 and 2 is incredibly fun. There's so many things that can be tweaked, especially in KOTOR 2. The community grows so much with modding, and truthfully I don't know if MMO's support modding, TOR will be the first one I've played :). But I'm fairly certain it won't be as accessible to modding like the first two

-TOR begins 300 years after KOTOR 2...WHAT?!? Like a lot of other people this is a huge letdown, and even if they incorporate Revan and others from the old games in TOR, it's not at all the same. At the core of the last two was this amazing story of Revan and what he (or she) did. I could go on, but yeah, the 300 gap is the worst.

-Each game feels like a different episode of a continuing story. I gather that the TOR story will continue to progress over time, but the problem I see with that, is that you can't return to past stories. What if I wanted to replay it? What if I wanted to see what other options I have? The guys that are making TOR said that you won't be able to hit redo on a choice, which in truth excites me, but at the same time I'm slightly bummed out. We don't know how this whole MMO is gonna work out, I have relatively short knowledge on the genre, but that's my thoughts.

At the end of the day though, I am still very excited for TOR. The video on the voice acting excites me greatly as well :). But KOTOR and TOR are probably gonna be completely different, and that makes me sad. If they would've made KOTOR 3 and made it a trilogy, and THEN made TOR, I probably wouldn't be so sad about it. But hell, I'm just a customer.

There's definitely been rumors of Obsidian trying to get the rights to build KOTOR 3, so perhaps you will get your wish someday.

The modding support will probably be in the form of the Interface but besides that I doubt there will be any. Good points though.

I really really want it to have as many MMO aspects as possible. In fact by biggest fear is that it will be mostly solo with some group content..

I'm hoping that it wont be similar to the Guild Wars system of instanced rooms but more and more it's looking like it is. Either way though I am looking forward to it.

Comment by ChadeFallstar made on August 23rd, 2009 at 7:15pm
What does that mean, instanced rooms? The only MMO I have ever played is LOTRO...how is what you're talking about different than something like that?

Comment by Bharak made on August 23rd, 2009 at 7:28pm
Well in a game like Guild Wars you have a common area with no fighting, but with tons of people and a chance to guild up with some. But once you go "outside" with the mobs the instance is only yours and anyone else in your group. No one else it there and you have the mobs to yourself.

They never really tried to hide it from us. They've always said there will be both instances and open worlds.

The smuggler, bounty hunter, and the first sith areas they showed are open-world areas. The only instance they showed was the ship.

I believe this system will turn out great. Variety = win. Open worlds are great, but when I'm planning a hard mission with some friends, I don't want to arrive there to find out another group just killed everything.

That's what it looks like so far, if you notice in the bottom right of the screen it shows a [#] in each area. Not sure if it means something different but all of the instanced areas seem to imply it.
