Star Wars: The Old Republic Game Testing Announcement is here
by Zoidberg
, posted September 29th, 2009 at 11:02 AM
The rumors about testing sign-ups are TRUE.The official news was released today:

We are excited to announce that we are now collecting information for those interested in applying for the opportunity to test Star Wars: The Old Republic. Our goal is to get feedback to help us make the best game that we can.

We will be selecting testers from the Star Wars: The Old Republic community based on various requirements such as systems specifications, age, and region. Because the testing program requires feedback from within the community, you must have an active Star Wars: The Old Republic (TOR) community account to participate (no banned accounts). The testing is limited to members who are 18 years of age or older and requires the acceptance of the Game Testing Agreement included in the TOR community sign-up process. Users that meet the requirements of the test and are selected for inclusion in the test program will be contacted via email (so make sure your email address is up to date).

Game testing for Star Wars: The Old Republic will be rolled out in several phases over an extended period of time. These test phases will begin with smaller, tightly focused test groups, and later tests will expand.

Want to get your name on the list of potential testers? First, make sure you are a registered member of the Star Wars: The Old Republic community. If youre not already a member, click here to become one today Be sure to check the box to indicate you are interested in becoming a tester. If youre already a member, go to the Game Testing Portal to begin the sign up process.

Please keep in mind that there are no guarantees that you will be selected once you have completed the sign up process. For more information about testing Star Wars: The Old Republic, take time to read the Game Testing FAQ.

We look forward to your help in making Star Wars: The Old Republic a success

Time to get all your information together and fight possible server crashes as everyone tries to get into testing.

Remember people to keep a lookout for scam emails, because they will likely pick up after this point.

Update 9/28/09: The website is being hammered right now so it might take you a bit to get signed up. If you are unable to sign up or have trouble I would suggest trying again later.

Update 9/30/09: Sean posted an update on the forum regarding the site and testing app traffic:

Thank you for your overwhelming support and interest in our Game Testing program. Its been a humbling 24 hours. We knew that interest would be high but yesterday the community proved just how highly anticipated Star Wars: The Old Republic is. We experienced an overwhelming amount of traffic which resulted in having to bring the website down so the team could address the performance and capacity issues.

While we are still experiencing a high degree of traffic, we have brought the service back up and are accepting new accounts and Game Tester applications. We will be continually monitoring the service and do our best to manage the continued volumes of interest. We have also brought up the community section of The Old Republic but please understand that we will take the forums down as necessary to alleviate some of the traffic.

We recognize and have heard from some of you that there are some difficulties in registering with us, and want you to know that we are working to provide you with ongoing solutions. For those of you experiencing issues in signing up, see this thread for more information.

Thank you again for your continued interest

Things to note about the Testing Phases:

Game testing for Star Wars: The Old Republic will be rolled out in several phases over an extended period of time. These test phases will begin with smaller, tightly focused test groups, and later tests will expand.

Our approach is to have new testers for each testing session. That said, players who give excellent feedback or find and report good bugs may be considered for additional testing sessions.

The duration of each testing session will vary depending on what content or features are being tested.

Seems to me like some solid evidence that points toward the validity of the microtransaction rumors. Also, I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who reads licensing agreements.

I'd also like to point out that I fail at reply buttons. Apologies for the separate thread.

Comment by eria made on September 30th, 2009 at 3:51am
hehe, it happens. And yes, reading the agreements is always a good thing, you never know what they may throw your way.

I am unsure how I feel about the game possibly being MT based. From a business standpoint, it makes a lot of sense to me, I guess it just depends on how far it goes. Times are changing though, we're going to start seeing MT a lot more.

Comment by Murtaugh made on September 30th, 2009 at 4:06am
As with most things, it'll depend on implementation. While I like the idea of not having to pay a monthly fee, I don't want my initial purchase price to only get me a vanilla game where I'm forced to pay $5.00 here and there for items/abilities/skills and such. I don't want Johnny Random crushing me in PvP or taking my raid spot in PvE just because he has extra money to waste. I'd be happiest if the microtransactions were restricted to cosmetics (armor designs/colors, mounts, etc), but that doesn't make much sense from a business perspective. I wouldn't be surprised if we end up with a combination of the two; a lower monthly fee with the option of purchasing slight character upgrades or cosmetic enhancements on the side.

Just wanted to point out a few things I read in the Test Agreement (yes I read it all).

One is there is an NDA. The only things you will be able to publicly say is that there is a game program (beta testing), and that you are in it.

The second one is huge, and I'm interested to hear people's responses. This is straight from the agreement...

H) You acknowledge and agree that all points acquired during the Game Program are non-refundable and have no monetary value.
(I) You acknowledge and agree that all items acquired for points during the Game Program are non-refundable and non-tradable.
(J) You acknowledge and agree that BWA reserves the right to add or remove points to your account at any time and without warning.
(K) You acknowledge and agree that BWA reserves the right to change/add/remove points rewarded in the Game store at any time and without warning.
(M) You acknowledge and agree that points acquired during the Game Program cannot be saved up for or used in the commercial version of the Game.
(N) You acknowledge and agree that all points will be removed from your account before going into the next test phase (if applicable).
(O) You acknowledge and agree that points acquired during the Game Program do not entitle you to any points during any other test stages (if applicable) or for the commercial release of the Game.

Points? Game Store? Thoughts?

Interesting, ill check it out later today and make a post about it.

Well as long as these "points" can't be bought using real money I'd be fine with what ever this system is. If its you spend points that are only gotten by playing the game, guess I would be ok with it.

Haha, I'm progressing through each step 15 minutes at a time. Alas, this will all be worth it if I get to help test the game.

Would this be Bioware's First Beta server crash lol

Comment by Lethality made on September 29th, 2009 at 8:09pm
Well, I hope BioWare is looking at this as a lesson learned... every MMO studio has gone through the "unexpected popularity" thing in one way or another.

This is just the web site, which is an infrastructure that is VERY easy to scale... Lets hope they do better infrastructure planning for the game!

Comment by RogueJedi86 made on September 29th, 2009 at 8:46pm
To put it another way, maybe this "Game Testing Signups" is Bioware's way of testing the waters, to get an idea of how big their servers need to be. They're getting a real good idea of how many players are eager to play the game.

Comment by Chasted made on September 29th, 2009 at 8:33pm
We shall see... I mean, planning for server hardware is a lot easier because you can just add queues in order for it to not be overloaded.

A website cannot just issue a number though.

Comment by The BBP made on September 29th, 2009 at 8:29pm
I guess it was only a matter of time before someone started with this complaint. I just sorta figured I would see it at the TOR forums first.

You are fretting over nothing to be honest. To even attempt to judge how they will run things based on getting slammed today is stretching it wayyyyy far.

Comment by Lethality made on September 29th, 2009 at 8:33pm
Not fretting whatsoever... All I know is they are standing there with egg on their face like every. other. studio. You'd think something would have been learned by now, as I mentioned, web capacity is easy to scale.

Comment by The BBP made on September 29th, 2009 at 8:45pm
Perhaps you oughta call them up and teach them how easy it is so that we can get to registering for BETA?

If one of you guys don't get in I'll be surprised

Comment by Gamewiz made on September 29th, 2009 at 6:27pm
... anyone else think it's been far longer than just a "few hours"? I think it's odd that they really couldn't anticipate this happening. Just how many companies go through this same thing every time? If Bioware is making adjustments to their site because of the overwhelming response, why couldn't they do that BEFORE they began the whole process and effectively froze everthing?

Comment by RogueJedi86 made on September 29th, 2009 at 7:12pm
Because how do you account for an overwhelming response? It's not like BioWare could predict that this would get so many people.

Comment by Justin made on September 29th, 2009 at 8:07pm
It's very easy in fact. It's naturally assumed this game has alot of hype behind it... Take the necessary precautions to make sure your server can handle the strain it's about to endure.

I sure hope launch day won't be like this.

macs dont deserve tors greatness.

Comment by Boza made on September 29th, 2009 at 4:12pm
Site went up from maintenance almost exactly at 10:00 a.m. CST, and took about 4 minutes total to sign up, in case anyone hasn't yet and is wondering.

Also, if you have a Mac (like me! :)) make sure you're in Boot Camp when you try to sign up, it's Windows only at the moment. Additionally, you'll need to have Java installed/enabled to complete the system scan, as it's not a dxdiag they're taking.

Hope this helps, and good luck everyone! Even if we don't get in, within a year we'll all be playing!

Comment by snafu made on September 29th, 2009 at 3:58pm
Does this mean they will have to release all the information on classes, planets, and other major attributes of the game before people get into the beta and figure this stuff out on their own?

Does anyone know the standard timeframe between signups and acceptance into a closed beta?

Comment by RogueJedi86 made on September 29th, 2009 at 4:39pm
When MMOs test things like this, they usually only test them in small parts, so everyone has their attention focused on specific things. If you put in everything at once, it's hard to get focused feedback. So we'll likely start with only one or 2 planets per side, and only a couple classes. I know in WoW's Beta, they gradually introduced new classes, with Hunters being the last class released to Beta(shortly before launch).

So yeah, expect very little to test at a time. They'll test each bit until it's relatively stable and bug-free, then open more stuff for testing.

DH Team
Comment by Zoidberg made on September 29th, 2009 at 3:59pm
They can still release info at any rate they want because people SHOULD follow the NDA that they sign. They can also test parts that are released first as restricted testing often comes first.

What can I say except... WOOOOOT. It's wonderfull to recieve this news, meaning that the game isn't so far away. I myself will not be joining the beta because i would much rather enjoy the experience when the game launches. I hope we will be getting a few spoilers concerning gameplay, environment and classes. As for the stroy itself, ignorance is our best weapon untill we actually get to play the game.

Comment by RogueJedi86 made on September 29th, 2009 at 3:16pm
To play devil's advocate, TOR may not be near release. If BioWare has any sense, they'll use a Game Testing period to test the hell out of the game for as long as they can until it's perfect. Maybe if they test it long enough and well enough, TOR won't be plagued with the usual billion bugs you get after launch when a lot of people are pushing the classes and quests and world to its limits.

But at least a Testing period means we're one step closer to release. For that I'm as excited as everyone else. :D

Comment by JediCosmin made on September 29th, 2009 at 3:25pm
True. Some of us left WoW to get away from Blizzard-like companies ;) Patience is a virtue and it can lead to a very good game.

I do see one problem with this. A few months back, y'all reported on "TOR Beta Scams". With the actual Beta(or the Game Testing, as BioWare is calling it) coming soon, those scams will suddenly seem more realistic for TOR fans, and unfortunately trick people into giving up their account info.

Comment by RogueJedi86 made on September 29th, 2009 at 12:31pm
Another minor thing, but it looks like the article doesn't say the word BETA at all. Seems they're only referring to it as "Game Testing". I wonder if that's intentional? Does that mean this may not be a Beta, or just a Beta By Another Name?

There is an option to update your system information after you sign up for beta.

If this Game Testing is NDA'd, how will DH report on info from it? Hard to beat those Non-Disclosure Agreements. Maybe BioWare will be cool and not have an NDA, letting all the info from the Game Testing serve as more hype for TOR.

If we get into beta you know exactly how we will report. Pretty much report on official stuff that is public knowledge and pull the Bioware card, "I cant talk about that yet."

Ahhhh....

I signed up, but I have to wait until I get home to give my CPU specs. That sucks...I do hope this isn't a first come first serve thing. It will be hours before I can get to my PC.

THE PAIN!!!!

I logged into the site and click the link that said 'Become a Tester' and was taken to a page, but the only thing it said was Not Authorized.
