Voice Dissection for "Developer Dispatch - The Making of Coruscant"

While listening to the recent Developer Dispatch, we noticed a couple of interesting statements hidden within the broad generalizations and marketing lingo. In this article we are going to go over a few of the things said during the video, while we wait for a more high quality version to be available for visual analysis. As a note of caution, everything mentioned during this dissection is purely conjecture and speculation and should be treated as such.

"The stories that take place on Coruscant really introduce the player to the greater galaxy. They introduce the player to the roll of the Jedi in the greater galaxy, the roll of the Republic in the greater galaxy, the state of the Republic in the greater galaxy." 3:10-3:20

This particular quote sounds as though they are saying that Coruscant will be a hub that may separate two broad sections of the game. The first part of the game would be dealing with more internal planetary issues, such as what is happening on Ord Mantell or Tython, then, upon reaching Coruscant, you are introduced to the next part of the game that deals with the rest of the galaxy. Possibly being the dividing line between where you could start interacting with players from the other faction.

"You might be at the top of the planet where you see the skyline its very pretty, you see sun sets." 3:30-3:35

This particular quote may be revealing that there will be a day/night cycle, which could clear up an on going discussion on the official forums.

"As you travel further below the city, you might go down the first level down and it's a little bit dirtier. There's going to be a little bit more everyday travel." 3:35-3:45

Here we see a description of the area that could be where we will spend the majority of our time in while on Coruscant. This could end up being the area of the city world that will be equivalent to the cities in current MMOs. That is, a place where you spend your time shopping, crafting and interacting without fear of mobs or combat.

"You might be at the top of the planet where you see the skyline its very pretty, you see sun sets. As you travel further below the city, you might go down the first level down and it's a little bit dirtier. There's going to be a little bit more everyday travel. The next step might be where you are ending up in a say mob ruled area where patential at one time this planet was bombed, we all know that. Further down there's going to be complete gang warfare." 3:30-3:59

Here we have a much longer quote that includes the two previously stated. When taken as a whole, it's easy to speculate that Coruscant will be separated into 4 distinct levels, each with fully unique qualities, architecture, NPCs and enemies.

"One of the great things about Coruscant is that there is something for everybody. The socializers can hang out in the spaceport and the Galactic Senate and meet people as they come and go." 5:20-5:27

The big one that stands out here is how the spaceport and Galactic Senate are being referenced as social buildings. Looking into the MMOs past, and thinking of what locations are normally considered social hubs, we could make a reasonable guess as to what function these areas could have. The spaceport, being a location where goods enter and leave the planet, could very well be the auction house. While the Galactic Senate, being a focus of NPCs and Republic business, could be a heavy quest zone or possibly even a PVP quest area similar to the original battleground set up in World of Warcraft.

Additionally, a forum member named zechio noticed a few possible zones which could be areas visited within the levels of Coruscant and a slightly different take on what we might find in the areas.

They also mention 4 of the areas specifically.

The Works: Probably referring to water works. This is where all the power, water, sewage, etc. is handled. Probably some long lost stuff, mutants, crazy weird stuff.

Black Sun District: This is a gang area. I wonder if this mean all the area that the Black Sun claims, or if it's specifically their base or what not.

Senate District: Think this mostly speaks for itself.

Space Port: Interesting. A whole area for the space port. Somewhere for socializers to meet people as they come and go...interesting. I would imagine a bar, possibly an arena, maybe bounty hunter post. - zechio

Just as a reminder, everything covered in this post is pure speculation based off of information contained within the "Developer Dispatch - The Making of Coruscant". Nothing stated above should be considered anything more then conjecture.

Okay, so I am not up to speed on the Podcasts, okay? BUT, I'm here now and that's the important thing, right?

Anyway, I am up to this particular podcast, right now, and it's been a while since I've seen the Coruscant Developer Dispatch. I have to say that it really opened my eyes on a lot of different things. I've spotted a few things that may have been missed.

@ 1:20 - Clint Young, Senior Concept Artist, pops up on the screen. The important thing to notice is that we should really be paying close attention to these. Just over his right shoulder, on the computer monitor, is the 3-D rendering of the Vanguard-class Corvette that they just released this year at E3. ;)

@ 4:32 - The bottom left part of the screen, on the landing pad, appears to be occupied by another possible ship class. My conjecture: possibly Smuggler, Imperial Agent, or even Trooper ship.

@ 4:58 - Another ship class, in the very foreground. Looks to be a possible descendant of whatever class of ship the "Ebon Hawk" happened to be. It appears to be the classic freighter style that Corellians are known for (Specifically, "clones" or "predecessors" to the YT-1300.). The ship is seen again @ 5:15 in the background as though the camera pulled a 360 degree view, a little hard to spot from that vantage point.

Given that, there's at least a hint at two other possible player ship models. Thought you outta know. ;)

Around 4:15ish, he comments on parking garage .. hint at being able to take your own vehicle to different districts of Coruscant, and leaving it in a parking garage to go quest, come back to your vehicle and go to another district maybe?

Just pure speculation, but would make sense in a city so immense.

It's already been said its Rebpublic space. Sith players can cry all they want. Your not going to Corusant. Why do these idiots think they can go to the Republic "main city" but noone seems to think anyone could go to Korriban? *facepalm*

Comment by RogueJedi86 made on October 10th, 2009 at 11:24pm
Well Korriban was more open to neutrals and Jedi in KotOR1. Maybe that's changed since KotOR, maybe the Sith have blocked off all non-Sith Imperial access.

Maybe Sith think they could sneak in under the radar and undermine the Republic from the lower levels. After all, Palpatine did it throughout the prequels. Dooku was the ever so Most Wanted leader of the CIS, and he seemed to get back to Coruscant after the Battle of Geonosis without any real effort.

BTW the works is one of the areas where Anikin and Obiwan chased Zam Wessel through in EP2.
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/The_Works

They later ended the chase in the Uscru Entertainment District which you will see in SWTOR.

Courscant would make such a cool place for player-housing.

Comment by RogueJedi86 made on October 10th, 2009 at 1:28pm
Instanced apartments would definitely work for Coruscant.

I REALLY want to know what the deal is with player housing. I have loved it since FFXI, and hope it's implemented. You guys can expect a write up the second something concrete is released by BioWare ;)

who says I've ONLY done FFXI? I said I started there. LOTRO is my personal favorite, the sense of community was fantastic, my wife bought the house next door ;)

Comment by RogueJedi86 made on October 10th, 2009 at 11:21pm
Dover doesn't get dibs on a housing article since he only played FFXI's limited housing. He needs to experience SWG or even LotRO's housing first. An MMO with housing with actual houses with a real exterior, and not just a tunnel into a loading screen. It's pretty fun. :)

You will have to fight me over the write up! I am a HUGE fan of being able to own a house, or apartment. Refer to my old write up on my subject for my opinion. But yes, I am crossing my fingers for housing, HANDLED THE RIGHT WAY!!! Can't say that enough

I noticed in the new video at 4:56 that ship sitting there almost looks like the Ebon Hawk I looked at a pic of the Ebon Hawk at wookieepedia and man they look close theres also another shot from behind the ship in the vid at 5:13. Now im not saying that it is the Ebon Hawk just the familer look of the ship reminds me of the good times in kotor 1and 2

Comment by Zenkei made on October 9th, 2009 at 9:02pm
When I first watched the video, I thought it was the Ebon Hawk. However upon reviewing it further, it was obvious that it wasn't. Regardless though, I certainly agree that the familiar look of the ship reminds me of all the good times flying around in it.

I love star wars just as much as you guys do but i think this is hilarious. We worship Star wars the old republic almost like a God, the quotes are almost like Bible qoutes:
“As you travel further below the city, you might go down the first level down and it’s a little bit dirtier. There’s going to be a little bit more everyday travel.” 3:35-3:45
You see like Gn 3:16 or something like that. I dont know about you guys but this is getting to be really exciting!

2 things to note. The Works is not a water works area or anything like that. It's an industrial area, seen in the movies where Dooku met Sidious at the end of AotC. http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/The_Works

And the very first quote makes it sound like Coruscant will work like Dantooine did in KotOR1, and the Citadel in ME1. In both games, you run around on a tutorial world of sorts(Taris and Eden Prime respectively), getting a sense of who you are, but it's only after events on that world send you to the next world(Dantooine and the Citadel respectively) that you get a good sense of your main goals in each game. Once you leave Dantooine/Citadel, you know what you have to do, and what your place is in the galaxy. I imagine Coruscant could be like that. Each class's story sends them to Coruscant, and they spend some time there, and when they leave they know exactly what their main mission in their story is.

I think this clip explains how Coruscant will be in game.
