Friday Update: Alderaan Revealed
by Zenkei
, posted November 27th, 2009 at 11:50 AM
Alderaan has officially been announced as the 7th planet for Star Wars: The Old Republic. As Sean posted today:

Ever wonder what happened on Alderaan before the Death Star reduced it to an asteroid field? Now you can see it for yourself We are excited to announce Alderaan - a planet famed for its natural beauty - as the next playable planet in The Old Republic For thousands of years this planet has been a shining example of peace and diplomacy, but now a bloody civil war threatens the legacy, and the very future of Alderaan.

Access the HoloNet records to research the history of Alderaan, and find out about the civil war consuming the planet

Be sure to check out the Media section for never-before-seen screenshots, concept art, and wallpapers of this beautiful planet of snow-capped mountains and lush green forests

One idea that occurs to me when I saw Alderaan stuff and after i read holonet info about this planet. It looks like good place to make Jedi Consular quests. Subtly political and noble social milieu needs to be treat in more sophiscitated method which perfectly fit to Consular lore (I noticed it even I'm opposite to this kind of division: Guardian/Sentinel/Consular ;)). So there are also place for Inquisitors to make diversions and political manipulations. Sith Warrior is too rough for this :p

Dont forget Agents, they love to dabble in politics more than anyone else.

This is amazing! I just hope that the planets are huge. Not like in KOTOR where you have like 1 section you can visit, I want to be able to visit different cities/towns/environments. I know its a lot to ask for, but that would be so EPIC

Look at video from Alderaan. First scene show terrain and there is castle in background, castle from first screenshot. I am not sure, but for me it looks like it isnt a skybox, so castle and foreground are on the same map. It looks at least like from several hundreds meter to couple of kilometers :D

Whoot! Finally Alderaan is going to be playable. Can;t wait.

I really like this planet because it doesn't fall into the one-terrain planet style. It's nice to see planets with a variety of environmental features instead of just a blanket of snow/sand/water/city/etc.

Amazing visuals...!

Don't forget to check out the video, a lot of folks miss those on the Holonet pages. It's the little icon that looks like a mountain.

Absolutely Awesome! And here on a weekend I thought we wouldn't get anything. Where are those folks that said we aren't getting enough info now? Hmm???

BW did amazing on this planet, the snowy landscape and mountains are great. The temples are cool too, even though we've seen temples on two other planets before. The insect nest is a clear sign that we might be able to face the Killik! The first species to ever live on Alderaan, and have built many mounds and nests. And we could get to see nerfs, which could involve a new profession where you'd "Herd" animals? Either way the planet looks so cool, and its covered in snow! It defiantly has a peaceful feel, but how long will that last in this war...? (Probably not long if you join a pvp server :P)

It's as if millions of voices suddenly screamed out in joy, and then were suddenly silenced when they learned the game won't be out for another year.

Comment by Panzzer made on November 27th, 2009 at 1:50pm
where does it say it will be out in a year?

Comment by Brainiac9000 made on November 27th, 2009 at 2:14pm
It's just a guess that it probably won't be out until Fall 2010 at best.

Comment by Deidare made on November 27th, 2009 at 3:07pm
I read somewhere that it would come out by Dec 31 of next year.

I thought was 9 slots on the site. Did they bump up the planet slots to 10?

Comment by Panzzer made on November 28th, 2009 at 2:40pm

Comment by Panzzer made on November 27th, 2009 at 1:38pm

I loved the screenshot. I think the city looks amazing, im really excited to explore that city. Also in one of the screenshots it looks as if it is a big outdoor market, that really excites me, because it looks like there will be a lot of different merchants there, meaning there will be a large variety of things to buy :)

I honestly hope that merchants in this game take a bigger role then in World of Warcraft. In WoW the vendors are just people who repair your things, but no one ever buys anything from them. I think if u need something repaired in ToR then go to someone who specializes in repairing, but if you go to a merchant, it should be to BUY and sell items.

I agree with you. Tbh, when i first started WoW, i was among those people that actually bought those grey items because i didnt really figure out how the AH worked :D. Cant wait to see what noobish things im gonna do in this game.

Trully one of the most beautifull planets so far. The snowy mountains give a certain calm to the environment, surrounding the majestic structures in a gorgeous way.

As for the lore revolving around the planet, it's just brilliant.
I had absolutly no ideea that the Organa family was so old, and from such a timeline, they were involved with the politics of the galaxy. I forsee a nice political battle here, similar to the Orzammar situation in Dragon Age: Origins.
Also, the Killiks have been confirmed. For those who are not familiar with them, I suggest looking at the ''Dark Nest'' trilogy to find out more. I don't personally like insects, but their colonies are great to look at :D.
The bridge screenshot was my favourite. Left me in awe.
When I first set foot on Coruscant, the first thing i'm gonna do is fall off the tallest building. But when i'm on Alderaan, i'm just gonna sit on an Organa castle balcony and look at the mountains :)

yes ideed, it's amazing what technology is available now that was not present when WoW was released. The graphics are so much more detailed, this will most likely increase the re-playability of this game. There will be so many places to go, 7 planets named so far!! Thats like 7 WoW's unless the planets are scaled down which they most likely are.

Comment by JediCosmin made on November 27th, 2009 at 1:47pm
im getting a little worried that maybe my computer wont be able to handle it to its more advanced capacity.
when they released The Force Unleashed on pc, i just couldnt play it, even though i have Dual Core, with nvidia 8600 and 2gb of Ram. but i did play Dragon Age at maximum detail with no worries. but i think i would be able to upgrade when the game comes out. it seems a shame not to experience it :P

Comment by Panzzer made on November 27th, 2009 at 4:05pm
you should be fine with those specs

Great job BW. Alderaan looks AWESOME. Great story, loved the Organa tie in and castle screenshot. This set of screenshots looks amazing! The screenshot of the bridge through the mountains is great. Transportation hint??? And nerf races and betting?? Hmmm....
