The Sands of Tatooine and Threat of Peace #22 were both announced today for Star Wars: The Old Republic via Sean:
The twenty-second issue of Threat of Peace takes us to the long-abandoned Jedi Enclave on Dantooine, where Lieutenant Tavus meets the true culprit behind the efforts to undermine the peace treaty. It seems Master Dar'nala survived her Imperial captivity after all, and everything thats happened since has been all part of her plan. Despite his doubts, Lieutenant Tavus agrees to assist Master Dar'nala in completing her plan by slaying the Sith mastermind, Lord Baras.

Check out the latest issue of Threat of Peace now.

Far in the Outer Rim, the sands of Tatooine bake beneath the glare of two bright suns. Small pockets of barely civilized communities dot the desolate landscape, surrounded by the endless expanse of barren dunes and rocky canyons that have silently slain so many of those who ventured out into desert. Among the small shantytowns and settlements that persist, travelers may find shelter from the brutal climate, but trust is as rare as water on this lawless world. Visitors and locals alike must constantly watch their backs in Tatooines townships.

Access the HoloNet records to find out more about the desert wasteland of Tatooine, and the mysteries buried in its scorched sands. Be sure to check out the Media section to get the latest screenshots, concept art, and wallpapers depicting this harsh, desert wasteland.

I'm wondering how the "overworld" map of Tatooine is set up. The way it was in Star Wars Galaxies you had a 16km by 16km expanse of planet where you could run from Anchorhead to Mos Eisley. It would take you three hours but you could do it. That's what made having Vehicles or Mounts necessary if you wanted to go any faster than a run.

I realize that the player has a quick way or returning to any settlement with the "Call Shuttle ability", but how will the player get out to the middle of nowhere to find these hidden labs.

The only thing that jives with Bioware's previous games are maps of the various "important" areas just scaled up for an MMO. So you have a Mos Ila map and a "Random desert area" map where the hidden Czera bases might be hiding. I figure the specific Czerka bases will be instanced Dungeons by team though.

I'm sure there are escape paths somehow. I wouldn't think BioWare would like to have people run for hours to get back to urban areas to travel somewhere else. It will be something simple, but convenient for sure. :)

I actually thought the most recent issue of Threat of Peace was pretty good, the art has been much better and the story has more clarity, at least to me. Tatooine is just awesome looking. Of course the desert element to it like always, but they have treated the environments different than have been seen before, and the concept art alone gave me goosebumps thinking about exploring this planet in the ToR era. Also, were those Sith banners I spotted in one with the bird's eye view?

It's awesome they're showing us how Jedi can roll dark side. Much cooler than Sith in my opinion.

Also, I don't follow Threat of Peace, but was Tatooine's inclusion in TOR hinted at in ToP?

Even if it was even slightly hinted at. Although, if you were to talk about hints towards Tatooine - Wasn't there mention of the huts helping the republic somewhere?

Bah didn't finish that sentence and I can't be assed finding the edit button so... "Even if Tatooine was hinted at the slightest bit it would have even more proof of being in the game

Actually there was no proof of the Tatooine being in the game except for the fact that it has a huge portion of the star wars fan based community. So there was a lot of speculation that it would be in the game just because of its iconic-ness.

No, to be honest they never even talked about Tatooine. This planet came out of the blue, but I have yet to read the lore and how it’s incorporated into the universe of TOR. Well time to read.

Not sure, but Tatooine was definitely hinted at in the newsletter last week.

The reason Obi-Wan hid Luke on Tatooine was partly because it was a nothing world that no one had any business every going to. But the EU has dropped the ball by making it relevant to every other SW book and game. It's really ruining the perception of Tatooine. I'd have liked some obscure planet like they did with Tython and Balmorra.

Well I like the sense of hanging out in underworld cantinas and in bars on a desolate planet, or seeing a sandcrawler. But other than some of the obvious I understand what you’re trying to say Rouge. LA has made Tatooine seem like a planet were epic events occur, even though it technically isn't. While I might not have a problem with it, I do think there’s a limit to go to. Quotes like these don't say that the planet will be to blown out of proportion: "Visitors and locals alike must constantly watch their backs in Tatooine’s townships." "Among the small shantytowns and settlements that persist, travelers may find shelter from the brutal climate, but trust is as rare as water on this lawless world. "

However It still appears to have some sense of epicness that isn't, well... too crazy. Like saying that Czerka has some crazy weapons buried under the sands of the dune seas, that isn’t too crazy. Giving reason for the Empire to go check out Tatooine. As said that their messing with Czerka’s old labs. But past that it sounds like the good old pirate, bar loving, sandy planet we know. One last quote that made me appreciate making Tatooine a playable planet is this: "Between the two, a terrible secret sleeps in the sand." (Sarlacc! Haha just kidding... or am I?)

I think it was moreso a matter of time on this one, a big star wars game without tatooine just feel's wrong. The problem that inevitably arises is just how much content can be developed for this extremely underdeveloped planet.

In the 300 years since Knight's of the old republic, where the planet was just a series of segmented mining colonies, i can't imagine it's anywhere near the developed status it is during the movies. Even Star War's Galaxies take on Tatooine began to run thin, and would of been relatively disastrous if it wasn't for the jabba the hutt based content (which based on announcement of hutta I'd assume they still lack a presence on the planet)

I also can't imagine a heavy presence of sith and replublic forces, as KOTOR seemed to indicate financial struggle's for the czerka companies attempts to mine from the planet. The only thing i can assume is that it will be treated more as a wilderness/hunter's paradise planet then a developed world, with a heavier focus on exploration.

That being said, even if the scope of the content is small, i'd much much more personalized, albeit smaller world in order to play through your character's story compared to the massive but empty worlds from Star War's Galaxies in which you could run for 40 minute's in a direction and see absolutely nothing of interest. Perhaps it is bioware's intent to limit the size of the planet's initially to allow future growth, and make sure that each are is carefully crafted, closer to the detail put into World of Warcraft. By all measurements i'm sure Galaxies had a much larger world but i'd much much rather spend my time in azeroth.

One, It says that this planet is at the state of about 500 years after Czerka ends their mining colonies and begins to work on weapons of some sort. So A lot can happen in that 500 years after Czerka left. Enough to establish mostly rouge cities and cantinas. Second it says that there isn't a heavy presence of Empire and Republic colonies or troops. There are a selective few Empire agents and scientist, but as for a heavy activity of Fraction npc's it doesn't sound like there will be a lot. As for players... that’s a different story. I personally think that if we'd just be patient BW and LA can get their job done and we'll be fine. Besides we have two more planets, of which will most likely be Empire.
