Fan Friday: Developer Corner and Threat of Peace Today
by Zoidberg
, posted January 15th, 2010 at 11:23 AM
For today's update, BioWare returned to Fan Friday for the first time in quite awhile. Along with that, we also received a Developer Corner and a new issue of the Threat of Peace webcomic.

Fan Friday/Developer Corner.

Threat of Peace.

Devtracker so you can find all the Polls Sean made.

Go check out the work from the fan community and let the Developers know what your opinion in the polls. The Developer Corner has a nice video of a shield generator located on Balmorra and a brief look at some facial customization in the form of battle scars. You can also read the next Threat of Peace to continue the story leading up to the game and check out a few new class avatars for use on the official forums.

BioWare are listening to its fans and to the mistakes by previous MMO launches and their failures. BioWare should be respected in doing their first MMO the right way. This is the pinnacle moment in BIOWARE history. The hype is slow at the moment but the hype will be rebuild as the year progresses and see that the decade will be fulfilled by SW:TOR! HOOOYAH!

P.S. Emlaeh loves boob slider = taco love.

I agreed with both your statement Macer, and the Emlaeh thing. ;)
This is BW's first MMO, but they’re still getting it right and better than other MMOs. And it’s because they don’t compare themselves, instead they work ground up and build it how they think it should be, and how the fans want. Woot for BW and boob sliders.

I am going on record here and saying that shield is indeed THE boob slider. ;)

i think that with the scars they showed us some different ones but there are more and maybe like in DAO you can customize them a little.....my idea is to let us be able to make them bigger or smaller.....more coloured...just give us some options to we can chose for ourselfes.....and so we dont all look the same

kinda have to think that the "shield" is the way to keep people from venturing out into parts of the planet they dont want you at yet. I mean if you think about it if they are bombarding and you step out of the shield boom your dead. Its a thought, its better then them just saying no cant go their yet wait for patches.

the scars look pretty amazing but i find it kinda sad that bioware dont have the idea of making the scars decision based and instead go with the old and make it an option in customizing your charactar.

i hope that if they have bombardments its a bit faster then what we saw in that video; it felt kind of slow to me (too much time inbetween each individual beam). Other then that cool update. Liked the comic, and the battle scars look awesome!

I had just seen Highlander 2: The Quickening, "fifty years under the shield". How appropriate. ^^

What a god awful movie. I hated Highlander 2.

All of the movies pretty much sucks except for vengeance. The TV show on the other hand was great.

agreed, love the show.

Truthfully this is the best fan friday I've seen so far. Used to be fan friedays had nothing new in-game. The fact that they throw us a little bit makes me happy. I want any bit of information I can get on this game no matter how small. If this is gonna be the smallest reveal all year I'll be happy! Its just enough to keep me waiting for the next friday reveal. And while the game won't be out for a year they said game testing will hit this year, and thats when the information floodgates will be released. No matter how much people promise they won't reveal anything in order to be a game tester, stuff is still gonna flow out. Heck one of the board members couldn't even keep quiet about the release date and I'm betting he's hardly played the game. I don't care how much people are voicing disapointment I'M REALLY EXCITED FOR THIS GAME!!!!!!!

Yea, this fan friday actually wasn't all that bad. I hope we get more updates like this every friday.

Comment by Deidare made on January 17th, 2010 at 5:20pm
Agreed, most are just annoying fan art. Love some of it, hate others, but this one had meaningful updates. Not for huge ingame reveals, but just tid-bits at what we'll get to see later.

I agree. When I first saw the words "fan friday" I was a bit disappointed. However, once I got to the Developer Corner, I was fine. Not just because of what this one contained, but also knowing that we will get more of these...which seem to contain stuff they won't exactly show you normally.

Nice update, but I really hope that bombardment was just so you get the idea of how it would look, I just don't see a bombardment being a steady flow of single shots. A timed every X hours (in game time) of intense bombardment would make it look more realistic.

Comment by Deidare made on January 17th, 2010 at 5:19pm
I think the blaster fire might not even just be for looks. It could be a part of a quest chain for Republic players, and part of the quest itself would be to find the location of the secret imperial base. Then when you find it you inform republic officials, who open fire but do nothing to the shield. So you'd have to go inside and deactivate the shield. Just a thought of course ;).

Comment by zechio made on January 15th, 2010 at 1:35pm
I don't think it's meant to just blast away the shield and blow up the base. It is a siege tactic. The orbital ships can probably keep the bombardment up indefinately. Also, judging by their trajectories, the ships are spread out around Balmorra, not centered over this one base, so each ship is probably hitting multiple locations.

Regardless, it doesn't seem logical to me to leave the part of the outpost that's outside the shield intact. It would look far more realistic if it was all craters outside. I don't care if their main target is one building, the rest should be devastated.

Soon, the descendant of Bastilla Shan [and possibly Lord Revan] will follow in her Ancestors footsteps by coming to the Dark Side XD... well, possibly

Comment by AlphaAnt made on January 15th, 2010 at 11:39am
I'm OK with the update. January '10 is a month with 5 Fridays in it, so they have to spread the stuff out a bit more than usual, and a Fan Friday is a good way to do that.

The facial stuff was really neat, definitely an advancement of what they tinkered with in Mass Effect and Dragon Age.

Comment by Deidare made on January 17th, 2010 at 5:14pm
Yeah, because of their experience with character creation, I'm guessing we'll get tons and tons of facial features. I'm more so wondering on how BW might imply that for Alien species.

Comment by Supression made on January 15th, 2010 at 11:32am
lol if people were pissed about the 2011 release this is only going to add to frustration.

Comment by Xavier made on January 15th, 2010 at 8:21pm
This shouldn't be a surprise. Sean D. warned us back in November that things would slow back down after the new year and that Fan Fridays would return with a "facelift". Which we now know was the Dev's Corner.

Also, think about it. Mass Effect 2 drops in less than two weeks. BioWare is letting that game take center stage and saving all of the juicy TOR updates for convention season. Which, kicks off in March with GDC San Fran and PAX East and goes straight through the summer to the original PAX on Labor Day weekend.

We know testing will start in 2010. So, my guess is it will begin shortly after convention season ends. It will then stretch through early 2011, taking us to launch.

Character customization! Insightful pic!

Comment by hobowan made on January 15th, 2010 at 11:27am
Quite nice, but nothing really new. We expected facial customization for quite some time now, seeing something definite is nice, but nothing i could not have waited for to find out ingame eventually. The shieldgenerator is quite ... meh. It's nothing that makes me run around in circles because it's so nice. In fact, the sphere over the Dalaran Crater in WoW looks better from a graphical point of view...

Comment by Deidare made on January 17th, 2010 at 5:17pm
Well technically speaking, I think it would be better in a RP sense that if you would shield an important imperial hide out that you would go ahead and cloak it as well. But in a graphical sense, remember it does say "Work in Progress" so it may end up looking much better. But I love the sense of blaster fire hitting the shield.
