Friday Update: Threat of Peace 25
by Dover
, posted January 29th, 2010 at 10:12 AM
The twenty-fifth issue of Threat of Peace begins in the heat of the fight between the Jedi and the Sith in Dantooine's crystal caves. Lord Baras confronts Satele Shan with the fact that her Master was responsible for the attacks that threatened the peace process. When Satele hesitates, Lord Baras tries to urge her towards the dark side, even as Master Dar'Nala screams at Satele to strike the Sith Lord down.

Check out the latest issue of Threat of Peace now.

Late last night, Sean Dahlberg made a post on the Star Wars: The Old Republic official forums regarding today's Friday Update. In addition to covering the actual update, Threat of Peace 25, he also briefly discussed how BioWare will be approaching the release of information over the coming weeks.

Hey everyone,

It's only a few hours till tomorrow's update but I wanted to go ahead and post this now. Tomorrow's update will be Threat of Peace #25. We realize some may be a little dismayed by this, especially after all of the updates we were having towards the end of 2009.

While we have announced our target launch window, we also realize there is a lot of information to release between now and then. We met with the development team soon after returning from the holiday break and discussed some of the information we want to release. In going over that, we decided to wait on a few things to ensure we are giving the community the most accurate information possible. We understand that pretty much everyone would love to have all the information about The Old Republic now but we wouldn't be serving the community properly if we told you all about a particular feature or mechanic only for it to be completely different than the way we explained it when The Old Republic releases.

We definitely have some new reveals and announcements coming up but I wanted to inform everyone that our next couple of updates won't be those. And while I'd like nothing better than to tell you what is on the horizon, I can't for the very same reason as I talked about above. We have a plan on what information we want to release and when we want to release it but we always make sure the rest of the team is confident with the information we are releasing before we put it out there.

We know that some of you come here weekly and some even daily no matter what information we release because you enjoy interacting with the community. But we also know that some come here for new information and we want to make sure you get that when it is made available. Here are our suggestions on making sure you know what's going on with The Old Republic if you don't wish to check the forums.

In addition to the Threat of Peace update, we recently posted a new speculation article that might help scratch that Star Wars: The Old Republic info-itch. Even with BioWare carefully waiting to make new announcements, there is so much information hidden in the official site that we will have plenty to talk about in the interim. Be sure to check back often as we get rolling in 2010

Lame? Are you serious?

Look at what they showed us in the 3 pages.
Lord Baras tries to lure Satele to the dark side - meaning either it is possible however unlikely to have a faction change or just plain showing an example of the "moral" system of the game

When Satele refuses and her Master Dar'Nala is raging with hate, obviously showing signs of dark side herself, she orders the wookie - obviously her companion! (Jedi Knight - Wookie companion!) to kill the Sith - The wookie does not only disagree with her but strikes her down, her own "Master" - meaning the companion can and will turn on you at some point if you chose a path that he/she doesn't like.

This is awesome!

Just seems like a timing problem overall to me. The marketing/hype push started a bit too soon. It got too high, too fast, with no real means to sustain such a level for another 15 months.
.
The E3 super-trailer of last year probably should have come out this year in preparation for release in under a year from then. Basically, the build up started too soon, but nothing they can do about it now but make a good, polished product, and try to get some good hype off the actual gameplay of late beta pre-launch.
.
If it's a really good game when a lot of people are doing that final testing Q1 next year, the hype will get huge again (and naturally be bigger than it ever was last year). Just seems like a good bit of the hype machine last year was wasted energy though. Could have easily saved all of last year's marketing energy for 2010. /shrug

As a management/marketing minor student, this is a pure strategy to focus all the power toward Mass Effect 2 and promote the game's technology to all of its media, consumers, and to the investors to keep BioWare's reputation on top. The game is now successful with record awards and superb reviews to deliver all the attention it needs while SW:TOR needs to tone down a little bit when it is still under development.

Now that the Mass Effect "after party" marketing party is over with, BioWare can now form a target plan to shift towards its new product, SW:TOR. The conventions, the media outlets, the sponsored events, and so on to promote this game is out there for this game, and they will put so much money and ideas that will rock the interest to its targeted audience to high scales. They will reveal many crucial parts to the game and impress the crowd by targeting their powerful marketing tool: Demonstration Presentations.

From there, the game will be working its custom schedule to grasp as much community as possible to get people testing for it and grab more consumers that way. Then, whether it will be early 2011 or late 2011 will determine the finished product. PEOPLE MUST UNDERSTAND THAT THEY HAVE NOT SET A COMPLETION DATE, ONLY AN ESTIMATION OR SPECULATIVE RELEASE!!!

As usual, ignore SW:TOR forums as your opinions and whatnot are trashed anyways. Let them rant and deal with their lowlife ambitions in getting so clogged into the hatred and poor speculation.

I end this note with a quote from myself. "The wise and open-minded will forever retain the best knowledge and power over the close-minded... do not let the weak lure you in." "Your given eyes to not only see but to retain information that seeks truth to anything that your mind can open up to." "The hardest thing as a young person, like yourself, is patience... patience is the hardest ability to conquer." "If you can conquer that, the things you want most in life will be fulfilled in good manner, without no harm done to yourself."

A very excelent perspective. They will also have somewhat of a hard job, seeing that Cataclysm will be launched way before TOR. A large number of sales is already expected of this expansion (i'm not going to try it seeing that i have had enough WoW to last a lifetime :P).
Even though i hope for more interesting news in the future, i'm glad i have Mass Effect 2 to keep me entertained. The game was genius on many levels and it only shows how much good BioWare can do when they actually take their time with a game and don't just release it and develop alot of patches along the way to either fix or keep the population satisfied.

Comment by Korrick made on January 30th, 2010 at 6:11pm
Cataclysm is coming out at the end of 2010 and TOR isn't coming out until probably 2nd quarter of 2011. That will give people plenty of time to get board of WOW again, I know I got pretty board pretty fast when the Wotlk came out. I really don't see what more Blizzard can do to there game without story. On Biowares side its genius to wait a few months after Cataclysm to make sure people actually want something completely new after they get board with wow again.

im starting to get pissed at tor i still want it but atm i hate marketing of tor lets send hate mail :P

Comment by Korrick made on January 30th, 2010 at 6:17pm
Just forget about TOR for now and go get Mass Effect 2 its an amazing game im really hooked if TOR story is any thing like Mass Effect 2 I don't think im going to leave the house for a long time especially with 8 different stories. I am also hoping that you can reach make level by going thought the story and not have to grind if that's the case I don't see how TOR will fail.

Look at it this way, updates are mostly passed by marketing. 90% marketing and 10% community pressure. PvP is a good example, while it was a small clip, we saw it in Designing the Darkside video. Was it needed? No. But they threw us a bone. Same thing with the voice acting video a long while back, they gave us our first look at auctual gameplay in combat

I am still very suprised that they did not start the year off with some big announcment. I am glad they are being honest. I can't remember a devloper ever saying don't expect anything for awhile.

The forums are looking fairly grim. I hope DH sticks to it. I also hope that this isn't the "idiot" move that causes shareholders to move away. Then again, with this climate, knowing what is to come, it is probably a great time to buy stock in BW.

I thought they said the comic would no longer be "stand alone" on Fridays?
I thought every Friday would be exciting and full of information from BW?

eh- I suppose they shouldn't release the hype before the hype itself is fine tuned and ready to be released.

Comment by Xavier made on January 29th, 2010 at 4:47pm
You can't actually buy stock in BioWare. It's a subsidiary of Electronic Arts. EA is a publicly traded company. It trades on the NASDAQ under the symbol ERTS. It peaked in early 2005 at around $68/share. It then bounced between $40 and $60/share for the next few years. Along with the rest of the market, it took a precipitous fall in 2008 and (according to Google Finance) is currently trading around $16/share. Actually, at that price, I might be willing to buy back in to ERTS.

Comment by Flagg made on January 29th, 2010 at 5:42pm
Already have. It took a dip post holidays and has been up / down in the 3-7% range since. Looking like a good contender this year with some of EA's announced plans. A year from now it could very easily be back up in the 50-60$ range or higher.

Comment by Chris made on January 30th, 2010 at 1:32am
I am going to research that- and if this is all true- then I am back in. I am willing to drop a few thousand on EA.

you missed the part where they said for the rest of 2009

No new info until March and GDC then. Well I guess its not that long to wait. Christmas seems like yesterday to me...

I agree with their sentiment about only discussing stuff when its set in stone. Although, as I've said before, the cynic - born of experience - in me, says that the marketing guys also have a big say when it comes to when info is released. I don't believe that everything we know about at the moment is the only stuff thats decided for certain, for example. One reason I think that: because it wouldn't leave a lot of time to finish stuff before Spring 2011 (assuming thats not an optimistic ball-park date).

Comment by Aeli made on January 29th, 2010 at 9:27pm
I suppose it is possible that we will get something new to chew on in Feb. If they are saying that the next couple of updates won't be big, it kind of implies that the update after those will be. That update lands on the 19th of Feb. Of course, its also possible that the word 'couple' was used very loosely.

Comment by chronium made on January 29th, 2010 at 12:02pm
Whatever I am just happy that the next story arc for Threat of Peace is probably going to start in February.

Comment by Xavier made on January 29th, 2010 at 11:38am
I'm not surprised in the slightest. I've been saying for a few weeks now that we won't see anything big until convention season starting with GDC and PAX East in March. Although, while I'm not angry, as Sean intimated that some of us may be, I am a little disappointed.

I was pretty sure a dry time was coming. It's just, well, I've been wrong about almost everything when it comes to this game, I was hoping I'd be wrong again this time too. I mean seriously, this would be the one I get right.

Stupid Murphy's Law. I need a Guinness.

Comment by supression made on January 29th, 2010 at 11:37am
Not really to upset with the threat of peace thing, just disappointed at the fact that they wont be posting for the next few weeks... this means pretty much all of Feb. TOR will be dead to me. Kinda sucks because Ive been following these updates pretty steadily for 8 months now.

Thanks for the prompt news. I try to navigate the forums regardless, but it is always pleasant to know I can come here and get it in one focused shot. Keep up the great work and great site guys.

Another letdown after the accidentally uncovered release window. Something tells me that a few things inside BW are not going according to plan...

Comment by Xilln made on January 29th, 2010 at 12:05pm
You'd rather they released information about the game that didn't actually make it to the final product like oh so many other mmo's do? It's still over a year away, you shouldn't be disappointed that they don't deliver solid game information week after week. All good things to those who wait and all that jazz.

Comment by Evel made on January 29th, 2010 at 12:42pm
As said many times on the forums and on Darthhater.com, the fundamentals of the game should be well established. While the full release of the game is a year off, you figure they wanted to do 6-months of testing before (pretty standard), so that means they have 6-months to "complete" the game (basically no new features, just bug fixes and the ever delicate class balancing act).

So things like Playable Species, Guilds, PvP and even whether or not Space Combat will be present in the game at release should be concrete. If it is not, then I am definitely losing faith in the game...

Comment by Xavier made on January 29th, 2010 at 1:08pm
Guys,
Look at this from a marketing standpoint.

1) Mass Effect 2 just came out. If you were BioWare, would you derail it's hype train by announcing big information for one of your other games that is still more than a year off? I wouldn't.

2) Convention season is right around the corner. Mass Effect 2's launch will be well in the rear-view mirror by then. It seems like a perfect time to refocus the market's attention on TOR.

Plus, at conventions like PAX, PAX East, E3, Comic Con and Games Con, you have HUGE audiences and all of the gaming media in one building, with G4 covering most of those events live. What better time is there to release big information like Space Combat, more gameplay footage, species (although, they may do these one per week like planets) PvP, Crafting and anything else I've left out?

I have to disagree with Hobowan on this one. I think everything is going according to their plan, even if their plan doesn't agree with your plan.
