Friday Update: Composing the Sith Inquisitor
by Dover
, posted February 5th, 2010 at 1:25 PM
The Friday update is live and it's time for future Sith Inquisitors to get another glimpse at their class of choice, this time from a writer's perspective. Sean Dahlberg posted about the update earlier today on the official forums, including a brief preview from the author of this developer blog, Rebecca Harwick.

Writer Rebecca Harwick takes us down the path to the dark side as she composes the Sith Inquisitor

How to explain the Sith Inquisitor?

I could tell you that the Sith Inquisitor is the Emperor Palpatine to the Sith Warrior's Darth Vader, but that sells it short. The archetype is just inspiration. It's not the destination, or the road we take to get there, but the guide. The Sith Inquisitor is Raistlin. The Sith Inquisitor is Lucifer. The Sith Inquisitor is Julius Caesar. The Sith Inquisitor is what you make him." - RebeccaHarwick

More after the jump

A few minutes later, Sean responded to claims by some in the community that BioWare is focusing too heavily on the Sith

We will have more info on other classes coming soon. In fact, I believe we've had a blog on most every class except the Jedi Consular so far.

Something to note, there is no "biased" towards the Sith Inquisitor or the Sith Empire. We put out assets when they are ready to be released and some things are ready before others. We have blogs written for various things and, as with any asset in the game, it goes through an approval process to make sure its ready.

Ironically, it wasn't that many months ago where the talk was that the development team was biased towards the Jedi and the Galactic Republic...

Either way, it's nice to get another view into the creative minds behind Star Wars: The Old Republic; doubly so in a time period when many in the community felt the news was getting light.

they are definitely focusing too much on sith imo.. we havnt heard any real info on bounty hunters, smugglers, or troopers in a pretty damn long time... BW kind of tended to always focus completely on the new stuff, and sort of shuffle the older info to the back of the shelf, even though we hardly know anything about them :(

I guess there are limitations to the stories that can be presented, it will just be odd that every Sith Inquisitor will have been a former slave. I would have liked to played a manipulating noble who becomes an Inquisitor, but the story option being presented is interesting.

As much as the Sith Inquisitor is very intriguing class to play, I am more of a ranged, sneeky guy with the mass destruction weapons on my hands. I like to be lethal in cover and stealth or like the heavy armor of BH to grant me a better position to fight against the jedi. SI will be my alt for sure... not a main.

The amount of info released is fine but I hope they update the old BH section. SW:TOR forums being stupid as usual.

Still going Jedi Knight, but Inquisitor will be my first reroll no doubt about it. I bet the story for the SI is fantastic. Imp Agent looks chock-full-o'-win as well. Decisions decisions....

Neah, after my main Knight I want a good old fashioned groin-kicker :D

It is a bit funny how they talked about the jedi knight that one week and then never again while the inquisitor gets all of this attention ;).

Devs r bias! <3

i was just disappointed by bioware this week....i hoped for something new =(

Comment by timskywalker made on February 7th, 2010 at 5:59am
btw: i am trying to make a promotion vid for the guild....there isnt ANY footage of the jedi only smuggler and some small parts clone troopers....and no republic talking at all...only sith conversations!

Comment by Lugano made on February 5th, 2010 at 9:16pm
Okay, I had been undecided before on whether I was going to play a sith warrior or an inquisitor but now I'm even worse off! I had been leaning towards warrior, but the inquisitor sounds so badass. I can't wait until we get some more game play footage of the classes in action.

Comment by AdruVail made on February 5th, 2010 at 9:03pm
"And where the other Sith class starts in a position of privilege... the Sith Inquisitor begins the game as a slave, plucked from obscurity and toil in a highly stratified, unforgiving Empire because of his Force-sensitivity and sent to become a Sith or die."

That really surprises me. I would have expected the SW to be more of the brutish commoner type, while the SI would be some carefully groomed apprentice.

"Perhaps he eschews both personal power and the Empire to follow the light in a society steeped in dark side temptations—easily the most difficult path of them all?"

Light Side Sith... niiice. Wonder if this option is available to the SW...

Yeah well.... you know. They should just tell the community no big updates till March. More and more people are probably dropping off these websites unfortunately. I find it harder and harder to keep up with this game like I did when I first learned about it. This isn't bad it's just how it goes I guess! I'm sure my hype will jump back up in a few months.

Comment by jerlot made on February 6th, 2010 at 12:04am
They did tell the community that. Everyone tends to tune out that sort of stuff I guess.

Comment by cdstephens made on February 5th, 2010 at 3:48pm
Well, he addressed the whole bias issue people were making posts about at least.

Comment by JediJoeK made on February 5th, 2010 at 3:32pm
Awesome update. Particularly interested in the last few sentences of the blog that stated you could basically join the Sith or fight against them. I am eager to hear how all of this will be implemented through storytelling and when progressing your character. She even mentioned Raistlin? That tells me she's read the Dragonlance novels and recognizes a great story when she sees one. That name-drop alone moved the Inquisitor up on my list of classes I will play.

Comment by Indu made on February 7th, 2010 at 8:08pm
Almost exactly what I came here to say. Raistlin is one of my favorite characters in media. Definitely did a double take when I saw the name.

I actually liked today's update. We know we won't see anything major for awhile and this was a really good read. Now I'm actually leaning more towards an inquisitor then a warrior.

Comment by JediCosmin made on February 5th, 2010 at 1:57pm
The Inquisitor's story is really quite interesting. A slave overcoming the horrible tests put before him in order to prove himself. Quite frankly, if I will ever make an Inquisitor, I would gladly fry those Lords for what they did :P.
"The Sith Inquisitor is Lucifer. The Sith Inquisitor is Julius Caesar." This particular quote caught my eye. The writer's view of him isn't just evil, but behind this "vessel of dark energy" there can also be a person. It's quite hard sometimes to imagine such things, but BioWare has proven time and time again that any of their characters can change in surprising ways.

One particular thing I've noticed from those periods when Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2 were in development, is that you shouldn't fully trust the trailers and words from BioWare when it comes to their characters. They are always full of surprises.

nice to know the dark side has at least one female writer, women are extremely manipulative and it fits the theme well!

I confess to find myself being a little disappointed with todays update - it seems like a compressed written version of the Designing the Dark Side video...
