The Timeline

, posted March 1st, 2010 at 8:16 PM
There have been six Star Wars: The Old Republic timeline videos produced and presented by BioWare and LucasArts to date. Each one reveals more about the history leading up to the story we will see in Star Wars: The Old Republic. With an analysis of the timeline videos, both individually and as a whole, an idea of the greater story begins to appear. Note: ATC (After the Treaty of Coruscant) / BTC (Before the Treaty of Coruscant)

The Treaty of Coruscant
ATC 0

The timeline videos are released in reverse chronological order, which is slightly unusual when talking about a sequential order of events. Because of this, The Treaty of Coruscant was the first timeline video and also the one closest to the time period of TOR. This video highlights the ancient and ongoing struggle between the Sith and the Jedi.

The first entry shows us that the Jedi had discounted the threat of the Sith, and indeed denied their very existence. The Jedi are portrayed as naive, while the Sith are portrayed as patient and deceptive. In the time leading up to the Treaty of Coruscant the Emperor controlled half of the galaxy, however he grew impatient as he expected his victory to come more quickly. This impatience shows the Emperor to be just as arrogant and cocky as he is cunning, patient, and powerful. To expedite the conquest of the galaxy, the Sith proposed the Treaty of Coruscant.

With the Republic weakened by the blockade of the Hydian Way, they could not afford to ignore an offer of peace from the Sith. This was especially true because the Republic, and even the Jedi themselves, viewed the war to be unwinnable. Their dire predictions highlighted the speed and efficiency of the Sith onslaught.

It was then that the Sith Empire met with the Republic on Alderaan to discuss a ceasefire. Meanwhile, the Sith used the distraction of the peace talks to strike at the Republic's core with a direct attack on Coruscant. Such an action reinforces the idea that the Sith cannot be trusted at their word; they would betray it in an instant if it was advantageous to do so. Because of the attack, The Treaty of Coruscant was effectively forced on the Republic and, although the treaty had unfavorable terms, the Republics only option was to sign it.

The treaty itself was used as a weapon far more powerful than an entire army of Sith. As a result of the treaty, the Republic was forced to sacrifice allied planets and systems to save itself; many more worlds were conquered without the Empire firing an additional shot. The ensuing public relations nightmare led the Republic to blame the Jedi for the calamity, finally resulting in nearly the entire order being kicked off the planet. Without the assistance of the Republic, the Jedi, now on Tython, are left in a more vulnerable state than they would have been otherwise; perhaps exactly where the Emperor wants them to be.

The Mandalorian Blockade is Broken
BTC 7

With the unveiling of the second timeline video, the Mandalorian Blockade of the Hydian Way is broken, and the decisive sacking of Coruscant is revealed to be little more than risky plan performed when all else had failed. This timeline shows us that the risky sacking of Coruscant would not have been necessary had a small band of smugglers not intervened on behalf of the Republic.

The Emperor understood that the core worlds relied on the goods from the Outer Rim colonies to function. With this in mind, he manipulated the Mandalorians into creating a blockade of the Hydian Way. Starvation and riots broke out all over the core worlds and the Republic was willing to surrender to the Sith almost immediately. This event reinforces the Emperors preference for the use of manipulation rather than direct confrontation to force capitulation. However, the blockade did not succeed.

A band of smugglers led by Hylo Visz decided to take a risky gamble and attempt to break the blockade. The Republic seized the opportunity that non-allied smugglers made and pushed back against the Mandalorians. This shows exactly how willing the Republic is to ally with anyone that can help them get the job done. This video basically explains how the Smuggler class, an otherwise neutral profession, becomes a part of the Republic.

Does any one other than myself think that the second picture is a Indication that there will be 16 planets?

just a hunch I have always had since I first saw that timeline.

Good hunch, but the only problem I see is that the planets in the picture are all color-coded as Republic or Empire, and we already know several worlds are independent/neutral. I do hope we have at least 16 worlds though. The more to have fun running around on.

Great summary of the timeline videos. The biggest interest came to mind is by doing them reversed chronologically. I came to realize, when reading books about it, where there is a lot of vital updates or hints to be revealed right away that could be game updates down the road. I am looking forward to what these new hints and clues will be as they start to move closer to the origins. I think something big is going to happen, despite people have read the The Old Republic history books it seems like. Who knows, maybe there is a lot to know that we haven't seen.

This is why im going Sith, how can you fight someone like the Emperor. He just seems like a bad ass to me. I would not want to fight someone that could think of a plan as elaborate as this.

It is a bit interesting to think that technically this fight between the Sith and Republic could end up being a draw with both sides losing significantly. When you look back to Star Wars: A New Hope Jedi were basically wiped off the map for the most part, considered a "hokey religion of a long forgotten past." The Sith also at the time were pretty much in tatters except for the small bit about Palpatine being one and the references from episodes 1, 2, and 3. Then again, I am not that huge of a lore guy so I may be completely wrong.

Palpatine followed the Rule of Two set forth by Darth Bane to prevent the Sith from fighting amongst each other and wiping themselves out (as they were prone to do). That didn't stop Palpatine from having plenty of acolytes and others who weren't his apprentice however. If I am correct, Palpatine was also constantly looking for a new apprentice since he considered Darth Vader "broken goods." So, if anything, the Sith were quite well off, though not as well off as they had been in the past.

The reason for the implementation of the Rule of Two could be what undoes this era's Sith Empire. With so many Sith Lords running free, the Emperor will have foes from all sides; not just from the Republic, but from within his own Empire. The developers have said that the Sith Warriors and Inquisitors can work against the Emperor, which could end up undoing the Emperor. It's obvious this Empire won't last, that the Republic will eventually come out on top, so I'd say it's only a matter of time before the Emperor is beaten and his Empire destroyed.

Actually, technically.. Palpatine followed the rule of 2 that was set out by Darth Revan in a holocron that Darth Bane found. Thus, Revan started the rule of 2 :)

Just found that interesting.

Comment by Zenkei made on March 3rd, 2010 at 5:30pm
That is not entirely correct. Revan invented the concept by refusing to train more than one apprentice at a time, but it was Bane who put the concept into a rule and used it as such. He did it to avoid the constant infighting and bickering that the Sith so enjoyed. Revan did it because he believed those that trained more than one apprentice to be fools to share such power.

The Emperor's success in dreaming such excellent strategies reminds me a little of Revan's cunning during the Mandalorian Wars. Both of them seem tactical geniuses, but the methods used are completely different.
Still, I hope he will prove to be a final boss during the game. I can already see lighting and lightsabers flying everywhere inside that throne room.
Great article, from what i've seen, the timelines will go back as far as the beginning of the Jedi Order. Should be interesting.

It's almost as if the Emperor is a good study of Revan as well as the Outcast (of Kotor 2). Fun to speculate that the emperor could just be executing on the plan better than Revan might have planned.

Comment by korrick made on March 3rd, 2010 at 8:56pm
I think when Revan went into deep space he became the Emperors apprentice and learned from the Emperor. Thats why when he came back he was all about the dark side.

I mean it did say the Emperor was over 1000 years old or more. Since this period is set only 300 years before that means the Emperor was alive back then.

By the way im talking about befour revan was captured by the jedi.

Comment by JediCosmin made on March 3rd, 2010 at 4:44pm
The only possible theory I could come up with is that both Revan and the Exile were eventually captured by the Emperor and tortured. Either that, or the Emperor managed to extract certain information from them regarding the state of the Republic.
However the situation surrounding certain novels (referring to the New Jedi Order) can quite push away this speculation, there is always of course the possibility of spies infiltrated within the Republic. The Yuuzhan Vong spent a large amount of time collecting the necessary information before launching their invasion. The possibilities are numerous, but for now we should just agree that the Emperor knows what he's doing.
He has ''approach with caution written all over him" :P

This indicates that Lion King is a ripoff of Star Wars, who knew? Guess that means that hyaenas and graveyards are enemies and not to be trusted ingame.

Great article Zenkei. I think this article echoes similar occurrences throughout the history of Star Wars. The Sith have superior determination and strength, and more often than not, the only reason they end up being defeated is that someone with some level of that Sith focus is turned against them. Vader killing the Emperor, Revan ultimately defeating Malak, and so on.

The Republic itself always appears to be naive and unwilling to do what it takes to survive. An organization without a survival instinct is doomed to this cycle of defeat. The only reason the Republic isn't defeated permanently is that the Sith way of doing things is not ideal for governing an entire galaxy.

The fact that the Republic left planets like Rodia and others to the whims of the Sith will seemingly leave them with little allies to speak of in the coming greater war. Almost makes me think these politicians and senators are nothing more than long time puppets of the Sith as some of them have already been proven to be. It's like some scary cancer killing off the Republic from the inside.

Except the part about Jedi and lightsabers, I don't remember that, unless Mufasa is Obi-wan Kenobi.
