James Ohlen on Endgame
by Zenkei
, posted March 8th, 2010 at 9:34 PM
A PC Gamer interview came out today that highlights what BioWare's thoughts are when it comes to endgame:

"We're looking at classic [endgame] systems, but we're also doing something brand new that hasn't been done in an MMO before. So we're going to mix those two together."

Olhen [sic] then got hushed by the game's product manager, but added that Bioware was keen for players to continue questing after hitting maximum.

"We want to make sure the endgame isn't completely different to what you have been doing," he said. "So there will be a natural progression... We want to make sure that when people play ToR they feel like they never run out of content... that it's an epic story."

Multiple lines of thought come to light when examining this quote. Perhaps it hints at a possible intertwining between questing and endgame and/or it simply indicates that there will be plenty to do once a player reaches max level. One thing is for sure -- this quote will only succeed in "wetting our appetites" about the future possibilities of endgame in Star Wars: The Old Republic.

For those of you wanting to take a dip in the pool of endgame speculation, we suggest you take a look back at the first two entries of our guild interview series. Both interviews with Ensidia and Afterlife contain valuable insight into raiding -- one of the many facets of MMO endgame content. The opinions of these experienced players may inspire you to look at the MMO endgame in a different light.

It would be nice to see some more talk about group dynamics in addition to end game.

I hope Ohlen means that TOR's raiding will be story-heavy too, if only to spite to the raiding type who don't care about story. Give them a hard decision to make in dialogue or something! I could see it now, somehow through dialogue giving 2 options: "Sacrifice half your group to knock out a lot of the boss's defenses and make it easier" or "Keep your squad but deal with a much harder fight".

Okay, maybe not that, but some story involved in the end-game! Not just WoW's system of "This guy is bad, so go inside that instanced dungeon and kill him".

While I doubt it'll be in "spite" of them, I do hope that endgame is highly driven by story.

Spite doesn't make for good game design decisions.

Sounds to me like end-game will be PVP oriented.

I'm wondering what the term "end game" actually constitutes these days - it used to be when a character reached max level, but in WoW at the moment, it feels like you only get to the end game when you've upgraded to T9 item level 232 or higher for all your gear, and you really only have the high level Icecrown dungeon to grind. It seems - to me at least, that WoW has blurred the "end game" with the max level fairly significantly, and from the information in the article, it looks like Bioware may be having similar ideas.

Im hoping they can fix how endgame works on future expansions. I hate how when an expansion would come out in WOW that all the raids before that would be abandon. Just like when BC came out which is when I started playing all the others I herd of like molten core was forgotten. I hope they can some how save there end game content to still be important when a future expansion comes out.

Wow there gonna some how not only have your own story through your leveling experience, but in your end game content as well.

Im very curious on how there going to manage this. If they find a way to do it well, then this will be the perfect game.

Very informative, Mr. Ohlen. I hope this is the continuing trend that would silence the retardation on the SW:TOR forums and the hatred fueled by emlaeh's rage against the trolls. DH team now needs donations to further investigate the game conventions to see what systems are in place. Send those $$$$$ to them! :P

"...that would silence the retardation on the SW:TOR forums..."

The only way for that to happen, would be to shut down the TOR forums:(

I'm really hoping for a Galaxy wide planetary control system where conquering the contested planets yields bonuses/perks for your faction and opens up lots more opportunities.

Comment by Valkus made on March 15th, 2010 at 5:08pm
That would actually be pretty fun, if they have space added to it, it would be even better.

Comment by korrick made on March 10th, 2010 at 4:58am
That sounds kinda of fun, but im hoping its not a instanced battleground thing and more of a live combat scenario. Imagine hundreds of players in constant battle for planetary control, and maybe they can implement some space combat here as well.

Someone else is feeling nostalgic for SWG's world pvp in its old days? I loved that, none of this instanced garbage. You had 2 or 3 opposing faction members have a fight in a neutral city, and they'd both call in reinforcements, till soon you had 20 or 30 on each side fighting it out and chasing each other across multiple worlds, sending scouts to find the other faction when they retreated to another planet. It was wild, the escalation and the combat crossing the galaxy.

That system was pretty awesome I am not going to lie. I remember when I heard about the Ahazi server galactic planetwide power switch when control went from Imperial to Rebel over a period of like 30 hours of constant attacking and fighting when the imps had control of the server for like ever and it finally switched to rebel. Wish I could have been on that server when that happened. Great times.

Seriously, how many times do I have to say it? Bioware knows what they're doing.

At least once more. Not to me mind you, but there are still those on the forums who disbelieve. Sad, sad creatures... :(

I've said for years that the best approach to MMO design is to design most of your features to be a mix of what works and what you come up with yourself. You can have plenty of features that are purely your own, but for the core systems you can't get muddled in "Not Invented Here" mentality. So this is really great news.
