Here is Darth Hater's dissection of the latest Video Documentary from Star Wars: The Old Republic, which focuses largely on Combat. As in our prior dissections, we will add new content in as we find it, so keep checking back. Feel free to let us know if you notice something we missed, and we will be happy to add it to our dissection with credit. Note: if something is mentioned in a prior dissection, then we do not reiterate it again here. Low bandwidth users should note there are numerous images contained in this article.

I'm just going to throw this out there and see if anyone noticed it too.

At 2:20, near the rocket's target, is a swoop/speeder bike.

Is this just a static model? Possibly. But I rather doubt it. It's in an odd position for a static object which means that it either appeared specifically for this encounter out of nowhere, or an NPC drove it there.

I'm leaning towards an NPC driving it, because having something appear out of thin air in an MMO would look rather strange. It is done all the time, sure, but in TOR I'm thinking they'll shy away from it.

So, assuming this NPC did drive this speeder bike over to fight our BH, we can only assume that this is our first glimpse at an actual drivable vehicle.

This might be wild speculation with no real grounds or evidence, but it's a hope.

Not sure if this has been mentioned before or not but if you look at teh video at 3:34 you see the same icon the smuggler uses for cover for the Imperial Agent. Looks like they will both be using the same cover system after all.

Comment by Logun made on April 28th, 2010 at 10:51pm
Sorry if someone has pointed this out already but, Just a note regarding the Green downward pointing arrows seen in the latest video in the vicinity of the smuggler.

We've seen these before in the Dev Walkthrough Video there to indicate where the cover areas are for the smuggler. The Green downward pointing arrows turn into the Green Gumby cover markers when the smuggler is close enough to use it

Sort of a mix of this disection and the Trooper Play Demo question, but I didn't really notice the 'Looking at you' aggro ranges (from page two of the Trooper play demo). Is it safe to say that 'aggro' was turned off for the Combat Video? Or were NPCs that unresponsive in the Trooper play test you guys did?

Comment by emlaeh made on April 28th, 2010 at 1:19pm
You really need the UI bar displayed to see how that works,

I don't know where I read this, but someone said the aggro has to make sense to the story of the planet, and in my opinion, that was the best way to describe what was going on.

Comment by Loekii made on April 30th, 2010 at 10:36am
So what 'Planet Story' would have shallow aggro ranges among same faction groups? I can certainly understand how Hutta would not care if you are killing some random guy, but wouldn't they be bothered if you were killing their 'buddies'?

Also, is the 'looking at you' a radius, or a visual cone -- ie is it a shorter range if they are facing away from you? (if you were able to observe this).

Comment by Davidinator made on April 27th, 2010 at 3:06pm
Very thorough dissection, though the Trooper cheering may be just that - a Trooper cheering, rather than any "rallying cry" ability. Still, nice speculation!

i doubt it, bioware pretty much said somewhere that they had particuliar ideas in mind for planet "ambience" so that they convey a particuliar feeling to the player and that day/night cycle would screw that in some case.

Comment by Moldy made on April 26th, 2010 at 6:03pm
Concerning the second Trooper pic. The additional soldiers seem a lot more like companion characters to me. I suspect that the troopers companions will be additional "squadmates". Seems like it would tie in well with their Havoc Squad Story mechanic.

Comment by ZealotX made on April 27th, 2010 at 8:06am
Possibly, but you only get one companion out at a time. So at least one had to be an NPC or other player. In fact, I really don't think they showed companions in this video.

Comment by Moldy made on April 27th, 2010 at 11:16am
Yet, we dont know if there will be any "pet" classes in the game yet. A less powerful companion type of character could be a class specific ability. We do see the Imperial Agent with some sort of drone(healing?) floating around him. It could be a power like "Reinforce Squad".

We've really only seen a couple of powers from each class. Perhaps these types of abilities are coming higher up the xp ladder.

All speculation of course :D

Comment by RogueJedi86 made on April 27th, 2010 at 12:38pm
If everyone can have companions, why have a pet class? There sure weren't any pet classes in the KotOR games.

Comment by Moldy made on April 27th, 2010 at 1:12pm
It's pretty common in MMO's though. I'm not saying that there WILL be one. But its possible given the fact that we haven't seen much in the way of high level abilities. And, having a squad would make a lot of sense for the trooper class in particular.

Comment by ZealotX made on April 26th, 2010 at 3:51pm
I could be wrong but I just noticed something I haven't noticed before in any video or screen shot. Did anyone else pick up on this?

Pants....

2:56 or 5:14 for example. His pants aren't tucked into his boots. I've been waiting for this since the alpha screenshots. It was unbelievable to me that we would all be looking like Robinhood's "men in tights" or that skin tight pants is simply the hottest style in the galaxy.

Comment by Pangscar made on April 26th, 2010 at 2:03pm
Don't think I've seen anyone point this out, could have missed it, but at 4:10 we the SI casting a lightning spell on its target whole moving. Meaning unlike in past games you can move while "casting" abilities. Might just be that ability that lets you move and cast but certainly backs up BioWares theme of choreographed and dynamic combat.

I think it's a diffrent icon for a position were you can get cover, but in this one for a covering stading position and not a crouching one.

This is probably stupid but maybe you guys here at darth hater have seen this before. Between 3:10 and 3:15 in the video, when the camera is showing the trooper shooting is weapon, notice on the top left of the screen and you will see some kind of machine flashing. At 3:17 when the NPC is trying to free himself from a sticky grenade, watch at the left of is left shoulder and you will see a box flashing too
Probably something we have to pickup for a quest? maybe ship parts? that would be awsome.
Again weather confirmed, 3:10 again trees are moving because of the wind, and if you remember we have seen rain in dormund kaas screenshots, but this him pretty sure you already know.

I like the small touches like the head on your character tracks your current target as you move. Like at 4.09 when the Sith Warrior stands still while his target moves his head keep looking at it. Also later on at 4.38 the BH keeps looking at target as he moves.

Nice touches like this I enjoy in games.

I am making a character of each class just for the record. I did the same thing in Mass Effect 2, and I have a couple of two morality classes (i.e., Renegade and Paragon). I wonder if DH is considering a massive comparison between what we know about SWTOR and ME2? For example: http://imtalkingames.com/2010/02/mass-effect-2-what-mass-effect-2-means-for-star-wars-the-old-republic-video/ has a start, but with this video, I am seeing more comparisons (e.g., cover system or freezing enemies).

At 4:09-4:10 we can see a female inquisitor vs a jedi who force pushes the inquisitor and receives a lightning attack but resists it cause he do not get stunned nor shocked (probably he got some damage though) so lightning might be resistable after all

Comment by adipokerface made on April 26th, 2010 at 6:28am

This confusion is exactly why the Sith Warrior and Sith Inquisitor were developed to have unique visual combat characteristics.

It is a Sith Warrior. The outfit he is wearing is almost the same exact thing as in the Sith Warrior's armor concept art.

Comment by Critical made on April 27th, 2010 at 8:33pm
You're arguing almost against fact? He's obviously using the SI combat stance. If I'm thinking of the same concept art as you, I can find a real SW using that exact gear, not an almost, the exact gear in that video. Unless you know something I don't, my mind hasn't changed. Still think that's a SI.

You say they are being developed to have unique visual combat characteristics? I consider jumping, spinning in the air, slashing your saber with one hand, and kicking your opponent as you land all in quick succession to be a visual difference from standing in place and hacking the crap out of someone with both hands on the weapon. BioWare wants the SW class to feel like Darth Vader, and from what I've seen they fight like none other than...Darth Vader. Have you ever seen Darth Vader pull off what that SI did? Hell, can you even imagine him pulling that off?

At least admit that this is a Jedi Consular using this attack, you've already said it is anyway:
http://i426.photobucket.com/albums/pp350/Xelblade/Jedi_consular_attack.jpg
Found in the video at 1:29. Can't call that a Jedi Knight.

One last thing. I hope you aren't taking into account that he isn't using a double-bladed saber. I have proof of multiple instances where we see the same attack being used, but with a different weapon. For instance DH's and other peoples speculation about the dual-wielding Jedi using a reverse grip is wrong. Watch that scene very very closely, the Jedi starts off by pulling her sabers out of the opponent she just impaled. You know what that means? It's the same attack we've been seeing for months now, the impale, step back, run your saber right through the guy combo only with 2 sabers instead of 1.

Please familiarize yourself with our Community Rules that you agreed to follow when you registered your account.

We can tell a Sith Warrior from a Sith Inquisitor. Your thread is the place for this, not here.

Please watch the Developer Walkthrough of the Sith Warrior, and you'll see the same "stance." Read James Ohlen's quote about the "Darth Maul path" centric to a double bladed lightsaber. Unless now you're arguing that the "Palpatine path" is the fantasy "melee path" now?

Every time a Sith Inquisitor is shown with a double bladed lightsaber in this video, he is ranged. That is done for a reason.

Comment by Critical made on April 27th, 2010 at 10:52pm
Explain to me what I did in that post that was against the rules. I watched the Developer walk through and I saw the Sith Warrior standing in combat differently than the SI. I read James Ohlen's quote and that attack looked pretty acrobatic to me.
Also just what exactly are you trying to say to me with:

"Unless now you're arguing that the "Palpatine path" is the fantasy "melee path" now?

Every time a Sith Inquisitor is shown with a double bladed lightsaber in this video, he is ranged. That is done for a reason." ??? I

Now I know you guys have actually had experience with the game. So if you can tell me that you've seen first hand in game the SW pull that off, you win, I can't debate against that.

Discussion of moderation action such as warnings, infractions, or closing of threads is prohibited and will result in further moderation action.

More than one Darth Hater staff member replied to your original post with the same answer: it is a Sith Warrior.

The HoloNet has more than one combat tactic video for the Sith Warrior and the Sith Inquisitor. They also show kneepads for the Sith Warrior and the different belts for the two Sith Classes. The Sith Inquisitor doesn't wear heavy armor in any shape or form that can remotely be confused with a Sith Warrior.

And most importantly, the Sith Inquisitor doesn't offensively whack people with its lightsaber. Although Darth Vader is an inspiration for the Sith Warrior, there are many ways to play the melee Sith class. It can never be confused with the Sith Inquisitor.

It doesn't matter how you hold your lightsaber... it is how you use it and what you do with it that is the biggest difference between the two Sith classes. For example, both the Sith Inquisitor and the Sith Warrior block blaster fire with their lightsabers. You cannot use that aspect to discern one over the other.

We consider this "melee path" Sith Inquisitor stuff a dead horse topic since we debunked it back in December.

"Jedi Consular wouldn't have anything that would confuse it with a Jedi Knight as well."

Well actually the Jedi Consular animation in the Holonet uses an extremely similar attack to what a Jedi Knight does in the Coruscant reveal trailer. The JC does an attack where she spins around coming in low and swinging her saber, the JK uses an almost Identical move.

For the JC It's the 3rd animation she uses on the Holonet page.

"Her" head... and yes she does. I was actually more curious at the actions of the Trooper who basically ran thru her attacks in order to do what looked like a "modified" rifle slam on the other Imperial character fighting the Jedi (behind the Sith Warrior) Looked like a "I'm coming to the rescue" type manuever to me...

btw... "she" (the Sith Warrior) was the same character seen at several other spots in the vid including close to the very end when it's talking about playing as "Darth Vader" and the Sith draws her lightsaber and jumps up to attack the smuggler type looking character shooting at her.

4:03 - 2h saber that is charged with lighting. The guy is just standing there and his 2h saber has lightning crackling through it.

4:52 The Jedi has a lightning field around him. There is a Sith in front of him that is NOT actively using lightning. This appears to be a DoT effect.

Something I just noticed... normally, when an Imperial Agent drops his/her portable cover, there are blinking green markers on the corner of the shield. At 3:42 in the movie, one Agent has such a shield up. An orbital bombardment is called, and when the view centers back on the Agents, both have their shields up, but the blinking markers are yellow now, at 3:47.

Probably mentioned before, but there appears to be two new concept arts shown in the background. The first one is from a planet with an autumn feel to it. The first appearance of this concept art is behind James Ohlen at 1:18. I'm speculating that this planet is Voss, and the building seen in the art is probably a settlement of the Force mystics. The second new concept art is behind Mark How at 5:02. There are two waterfalls and a sunset in the background. Not really sure which planet this one is from, possibly a new one?

Have we seen capes yet in-game? There are tons of capes in this video! Definitely going for the Lando look!

Seriously though.... who would play WoW after this game comes out? I think WoW players are just waiting for a good excuse to leave. This is that game.

The story is massive. I think they did well to make this known first while the look of the game was still very much in development. Now that they're showing so much combat it is only because the graphics have risen to a level where they feel comfortable enough with showing the game that people wont be turned off by the graphics. With the commotion of lightsaber hilts... yeah. Reasonable assumption.

But this game looks great and looks like it plays great. It may be premature but I think WoW is gonna lose its crown. Story + Combat + IP = win.

- At :46 you see that the target of the sith warrior is stunned/disoriented. Assuming the sith warrior has some ability to stun/disorient their target.

- At 1:11 you see the trooper behind the sith inquisitor. He fires at the sith inquisitor and you see what appears to be an orange ball appear at the foot of the SI. To me it looks like its absorbed or deflected. You can see it better at 2:25.

- At 1:51 you see 2 imperial agents the one of the left is the focus. Looking at is weapon it appears to be the same gun that the Troopers use in many of the gameplay videos. If you look you can see a scope on the gun and that same fat muzzle design. If you look at 2:10 in the video you see a Trooper doing stock strike using that same weapon.

Im assuming weapons wont be specific to the empire or the republic and to a certain extent be available to multiple classes. (I.E. dont expect to see an Imperial Agent walking around with a minigun like the troopers.)

- At 2:04 you see 2 sith fighting one jedi. The jedi is attacking the sith on the left of the screen and he goes down into a crouch for a second or two. While the jedi is crouched you can see that the sith on the right side of the screen continues to swing at nothing but the air. Im assuming this is an older build or just a minor hitbox issue.

- At 2:20 you see new armor for the Bounty Hunter. Later at 3:00 you see the same armor on a larger character model. Some say they think that the bounty hunter under that armor is a Kel Dor. I dont see that being possible simply because if you look at the current Kel Dor screen shots that we have seen the side of their head is much wider then the mask in this video. If it is an alien at all it is not a kel dor.

- At 4:07 you see what i am assuming is the alternate animation for "stock strike" with the larger 2 handed machine gun. You see him run to the front of the group and can clearly see him knock back his sith target.

- At 4:28 you see a minor animation issue. The smuggler stun his target npc. While stunned the npc holds his palm wide open but his gun still manages to hover in his hand.

Just pointing out some of the interesting and or funny things i saw in the video. I still dont like lightsaber sparks QQ. Lets hope they will put in a check box so i can turn them on and off without having to turn down particle effects /pray

OMG First of all ty for the dissection :)... but right now i cant say anything else except
KSAO:FJDSAFL:KJASDLF:SJ DAF:JSDA FL:JSDAFL:JSDAL:FSDJA

Holy the Bounty Hunter looks AMAZING I already chose bounty hunter as my main class since the day it was announced... but these new abilities make him look SOOOO SICK

takes breath

Ok calming down now... So the abilities we see show me that BH will be an amazing chaser.... Meaning someone is running away from u... you can fly into them or grapple them...
Or lets say there is gonna be a team battle, but it hasn't started yet... the 2 sides are watching eachother waiting for the first move... then BOOM Grapple-hook one of the enemy players, straight into ur entire team, and you have the advantage already...

If anyone plays League of Legends, Blitzcrank, you know how amazing that ability is... For those who don't, ill give u a quick rundown...

League of Legends is a Dota style game, and Blitz is one of the champions you can play. He has an ability called Rocket grab, which does the same thing as that grapple ability we see the BH use. In LoL it can turn the tide of battle if used right.. It is a very tactical ability, and imo is amazing for BH...

Im reallllly excited for this now :D :D :D

Edit: just wondering.. but in the Kill / save captain vid, when we see the BH fly up, if i remember right he just shoots blasters (if i remember right the ability is called Reign of death? or something like th at) however here he shoots rockets? Has that been seen before, or is this new too?

Comment by Caliber made on April 23rd, 2010 at 1:32pm
We saw the aerial rocket use in the cinematic trailer, iirc, but this is the first game footage.

Comment by matrix2507 made on May 26th, 2010 at 12:12pm
im still trying to figure out what that thing is for...
i mean, most ability, as flashy as they are usually have some "sense of usefulness" into them.
like the BH rocket-tackle if i can call it like that. may look silly to do but actually serve the purpose of closing in/stunning.

but death from above ? flying high for some second shooting blasters ? i dont get what it truely be for except show off =/

Well, after looking over the dev dispatch and this combat vid: I believe the Yellow Arrow is still just a cover indicator, but it appears to be for standing cover ( which would probably be lower quality fitting with the yellow being kinda meh/neutral and green meaning good. )

In the Dev Dispatch at 6:38 the arrow to the left of the tree is yellow. Again at 6:44 we see a tree and the arrow to the left of it is also yellow. Also, right at 6:55 you can see the rock has green cover, and the arrow is right against it, suggesting you would crouch behind it...but the arrows by the barricade, which are kinda iffy wether they are yellow or green but I'm leaning toward yellow, are further away from the barricade and probably suggest they are for standing just like the NPCs on the other side.

I agree Zechio, appears to be levels of cover. Green cover seems to be better than the yellow cover indicated. There are green arrows in the combat vid right before the yellow arrow smuggler clip (3:35).

At 3:01, two Troopers are seen throwing a sticky grenade at an enemy, an enemy that looks very alike the bounty hunter in the sixth picture from the top. I thought it was a Trandoshan first, due to what looks like claws on his feet. Though at a closer look, there seems to be only 2 "claws", so I'm really confused about what it could be. Footwear with claws? Anyone seen anything like that before? :S

Might be wrong but the "loot symbol" in 01:49 did that change compared to the one we've seen before in the VO video / Demo walkthrough.

The yellow downwards arrow on the smuggler picture. This might very well be an indicator for an ability since the same arrows only in green appear for the Imperial Agent at 03:34. They disappear but not for a reason I can see. The arrowas are there whether he in cover behind the shield or not. I thought it might be the cover indicator for the enemy but on the smuggler pic there is no enemy.

The combat vid with the large number of knock backs, routes and other snare like abilites has a feel of the WAR combat engine. I really hope that we don't see the cartoonish fights of people constantly flying through the air and running back to the fights only to get routed and knocked back again.

Comment by Sinphonic made on April 23rd, 2010 at 10:53am
As far as PvP is concerned War is the only real PvP game out at the moment. Since BW took over the game it has certainly improved. With the amount of CC that each of these classes have and considering that 4 of the are force users, chances are that there is going to be a lot of knockbacks as seen with the SI and the Lightning push back. Unless they do something that they use in WAR where on PvE mobs you knock back and on PvP you knock down. Although this combat does not apply to every class in War.

But one thing the Dev's have been saying is that the combat is going to be very fast paced. If that is implied to PvP or just PvE is unlcear. But maybe you wont have a chance to come running back after a knockback. Since your will be just running back from death. Who knows? Hard to say @ this point I think.

Make's sense being that in one of the Dev Walk (20min one) the dev picks up the "Sith's" light-saber after beating him in combat. So this would mean that if you do pick up a second LS it is shown via your "Outer" Character Gear.

It appears like they are trying to get away from the type of combat common in MMOs where you keep using the same sequences of abilities over and over. Do you think they are persuing a more decisional and varied approach to combat? and if so, do you think they will be successful?

This is very good news for machinima creators - it seems SWTOR will offer a lot of combat poses & animations and will allow for epic and fast montage similar to the one in the movies.

You can see some pretty detailed shadows and shading in some parts of the video - some parts are obviously fresher outtakes due to better graphics.

I liked the Jedi Knight charge scene - it resembles closely the one when Mace Windu killed Jango at the Arena in second prequel.

BH is my class choice now - I was torn between SW and Hunter before but now I'm sure.

And this armour - http://images45.fotosik.pl/287/e2244facc4c047camed.jpg is amazing! It's a refreshing change into something more 'predatory' or 'alien'.

Good view of the "Dark side eyes" @ 00:19

A jaw guard/mask on the sith on the left @ 1:28

Looks like the "gumbys" are replaced with arrows. I see at least 4 @ 3:34

Interestion how the BH and opponents @ 1:48 don't have a shadows, but the rest do.

The Trooper ability to power up the gun changes the muzzel flash to the same color of the barrel aura. Cool

Good rag doll physics on the toons that were blown up.

Comment by Deliacorgrace made on April 23rd, 2010 at 1:33am
Is it just me or do the sith lightsabers seem to be giving off a sort of dark aura around the blades. Some look darker then others. Maybe it's something to do with higher level weapons that the characters are using, but it really looks like certain red blades have a darker outline then others. This is just something very small that caught my eye.

Also watching the bounty hunter in action is starting to pull me away from Sith Warrior. Rocketing yourself towards enemies, magic electro lasos, missiles and cool ass helmets. Yeahy

Comment by Deliacorgrace made on April 23rd, 2010 at 1:42am

At 2:19 in the new video there is a bounty hunter that fly's in the air and fires rockets/missiles. His helmet really looks like it could possible be an alien and not a human player under the mask. And I'm Thinking the shape of that helmet really looks a lot like the shape of a Rodian's head.

Image 9, the sith on the left, he's got some crazy piece of head gear on. if you go to a part that is slightly before or after that screen shot, in the video you can see it better.

Comment by Macabrie made on April 22nd, 2010 at 11:36pm
Re-watching the video; studying the mechanics. I noticed that when the Bounty Hunter uses his lasso to pull his opponent closer, the shot that was already fired by his opponent, and on it's way to the BH, was canceled and disappeared.

I'm sure this issue will be addressed before launch; as I can see this frustrating many players.

Edited for clarity

Tonight when i read comments on the oficial forums, at gametrailers and other websites, all i ear is people complayning about the graphics! Saying that they are ugly and the animations are old and not well done and that they don't like it, bla bla bla.

But they forget this is a work in progress, its still in alpha and the game will improve for sure! But who cares, most of this people are just flaming because they are WoW fanboys or dont like mmo's.

Well in my opinion bioware is making an awsome job, the graphics look much better then a few months ago, the animations are looking great and the combat seems real fun!

Comment by Macabrie made on April 23rd, 2010 at 12:03am
Look guys, I love Bioware as much as the rest of you; and I am looking forward to this game as much as anyone. Regardless of what phase the game is in, little things like this stick out to me as rush work.

Forgive me for having passion for the game, and being (in your opinion) hyper-critical.

I restate the fact that pointing out the little things this far in advance, will keep them from frustrating players during public testing as well as in the first few months of launch.

Comment by JediJoeK made on April 23rd, 2010 at 12:26am
I don't think it looks that bad really. Remember they're trying to make the game playable for as many systems as possible.

That being said there absolutely can be improvements, and with the game being a year out yet I'm not too worried about it. Graphics detail is usually one of the last things tweaked before launch of an MMO anyways... Probably any game for that matter.

In that screen shot,it looks more green to me. Just gets whiter towards the bottom of the arrow. makes it look a little more yellow than the developer walk-through. They may have just changed the colors of his indicators. all speculations it could have something to do with abilities as well. Could be a more advanced cover area than the older ones we seen to give a more defensive saving throw.

The "Jedi Consular double-bladed saber twirl ability" is called Blade Dance as per the Holonet. The AOE ground-stab Force attack is not Force Quake but more like an SI's Overload. The multi-target "rain" ability by the SI is what seems to be Force Storm.

Good catches; I think you found it all.

The new combat droid might actually be a mech, it kind of looks like there's a Trooper sitting inside it.

Zoomed up for a closer look

After watching the video I believe that the Jedi or Sith has actually stunned the "Droid" giving it that effect. Just, imo.

incredibly fast this vid looks to be full of juicy nuggets and hints for the dh team to find. i gotta say out of the entire video i was most impressed with the diversity of the armor of all the classes they showed, the sith war/inquis and particularly the bh. some very cool looking stuff, can't wait for this to release or at least start testing. loved all the bad ass bh moves they showed, jet packs, missles, flamethrowers, wrist mounted lassos, simply badass.

bh = win
