Friday Update Preview: Companions

Head over to IGN for a preview of tomorrow's Star Wars: The Old Republic update and an interview with BioWare's James Ohlen on Companions.

IGNPC: Can you give us a few specific examples of how companions might impact a particular player's experience?

James Ohlen: Companion characters have a significant impact on the player's experience. They are integral to the player's storyline. They interject during conversation to give the player their view on things. They give commentary as the player explores the world. They are an important part of combat, providing extra DPS, healing, tanking abilities or even crowd control.

IGNPC: Companions play an important part in the story, but they also impact the player's gameplay options. What types of tactical contributions will companions be able to make?

James Ohlen: Companions add a lot to a player's combat capabilities. Each companion has a specific role, whether it be additional DPS, tanking, healing or crowd control. Companions also have special abilities that can be activated to significantly change what's going on during a battle. One companion might lay down suppressing fire, giving the player some breathing room to escape or turn the tide of the battle. Another companion might trap a tough enemy in an energy bubble, allowing the player to use a divide and conquer strategy in a battle. Players can also equip items to his companion character. This includes standard gear such as armor and weapons. Additionally, what a player equips to his companion can change the companion's behavior.

The screenshots included in the article feature a Trandoshan paired with what appears to be a Jedi Consular and a Jedi Knight paired with a Republic T-7 Astromech.

UPDATE: Earlier today Gamespot published another quick look at the Sith Warrior. The video included in the article reveals minor story spoilers and also shows multiple Sith Warrior abilities in action, all while enjoying the classic "Duel of Fates" music. We also appear to see the Sith Warrior operating a speeder bike at 1:14.

In addition to the new video, the article appears to reveal a few game play facts including a companion character name Vette who is a Twi'lek pirate, and possibly that Nar Shaddaa will be an included location. Highlights below.

One of the Sith Warrior's companions will be Vette, a wisecracking pirate of the Twi'lek race (the humanoids with those crazy tentacles growing out of their heads, like Bib Fortuna from Return of the Jedi) with a dark past.

...the young pirate found a new lease on life on the smuggler planet of Nar Shaddaa, where she meets your character and comes across as a character who has both a cynical side as well as a lighter side that comes out when people around her take themselves too seriously...

Sean Dahlberg on all of the 'Sith Love':
Both the Allegiance and Class polls have shown things to be pretty even at this point. Granted, this is only a segment of the community but it's a good sampling.

We also plan on giving the Republic their moment to shine. I can't get into the exact reasons as to why some things are released before others (and there is a variety of reasons for different assets) but we also have a lot of "Republic" people on the team, too.

So, while the proof will be in the pudding (an expression, we're not actually giving out pudding. Sorry.), the Republic will definitely get their due. And Soon(TM)

Yep, going to play Sith warrior for sure. We get to launch people off cliffs and get a sweet companion. Win-win.

Do you think that the Sith Lord might be a "super-class" something you can get at the highest level? That would be pretty awesome if there was an additional tier that we haven't seen yet, that is only achievable endgame.

Ok. First of all, Hi all. New to the site. Great site, btw. Really gets into the guts of the game intelligently with no one posting things like, "Ha Ha. The Republic believe this will aid them, but we will crush their pathetic forces!"

Anyway, this update raises some questions. First, if Twi' leks are companions, there is a possibility that they are not playable. I wonder if they don't count as humanoid looking enough, the dev's standard for PC inclusion. I wonder if the Devs really mean it. The Rattataki are almost identical to humans. If this is so, what other races would be fill the bill? Darth Maul's race seems like the only one I can think of. I imagine Twi Leks will be playable though.

Also, are the devs on record that companions will be customizable BEYOND dressing them in different gear? I don't think naming my Vette Smurfette or Mystique would propose much of a VO problem. The NPC's won't be using my name, either. They'll call me Sith, or some identity name, like in WOW. Could this not work for companions. Call Vette Pirate or something? The Devs can't want a million clones with the same name running around. It's silly and extremely immersion breaking.

If the ship is seen in both Sith Warrior and IA videos, then maybe there aren't different Ebon Hawks/Normandies for each class. Perhaps there are only two? One for each faction? Or maybe they are differentiated by level and not faction. Boring ships to start. Awesome ones later.

I know starship personal HQ's have not been confirmed at all, but the idea of mutliple companions that you swap out per mission leads me to believe the rejected ones have to stay somewhere, and that's how BW has always done it before. And the alternative, constantly leaving them at an Inn at the spaceport at the start of each zone seems much worse.

Comment by DarkImperialAgent made on May 30th, 2010 at 4:53am
1. Not really. I'm sure there will be Human companions as well. But I don't think whatever races Bioware allows players to chose from...they'll all be able to talk basic. For the simple fact that the game is entirely VO.

2. We still don't know enough about the companion system...gotta wait until E3. I don't think companions will be playable during PvP.

3. It's possible it's just a random Imperial ship. I'm expecting this game to be structured like other Bioware RPGs (mostly Mass Effect and KOTOR), players will likely have some sort of personal ship to travel in and it will work as a base of operations.

Don't know if this has been mentioned already but the new sith warrior video may confirm there'll be at least 2 voices per gender per class as it is a new voice for the SW after the kill the captain video.

Comment by Posiden made on May 30th, 2010 at 2:53am
Its the same voice, but a deeper pitch.

Comment by adipokerface made on May 30th, 2010 at 12:30pm
Sounds different to me. Besides if you lowered the pitch that much you'd be able to tell. It'd sound kinda digitised. Just because they both use English accents it doesn't make them the same voice.

Comment by Posiden made on May 30th, 2010 at 1:50pm
Go back and listen to the dev walthrough and then re-watch the newest video. Its the same voice actor.

I was looking at the Sith Warrior vid again, and I noticed a trooper at 1:03 had a squad of soldiers behind him. Again. This has reinforced my thoughts on their companion character possibly being a small squad of soldiers, rather then a single person. They're just grunts though. Alone they wouldn't be as strong as another classes single companion character, but together they'd make a decent dps addition. Again, I think this is a squad mechanic tied into the troopers story. It makes sense for you to be the captain of a military squad. Still speculation, but you can expect a "told you so" when it gets released. :P

Comment by DarkImperialAgent made on May 30th, 2010 at 4:45am
No you're right. But if anything I think this will be an ability. Bioware wouldn't give players random soldiers as companions. Companions are part of your class story and are important. I've been hoping the Imperial Agent had an ability like this since I first saw Orbital Bombardment.

I agree. may be like the DK ability in WoW when he/she spawns all the zombies.

The whole companion thing makes me think I might want to keep the story part of the game separate from the MMO aspect. I'll have to "put away" my companion while interacting with others to keep from cringing. I mean, imagine ten sith warriors hanging out in a cantina, standing next to ten twi'leks named Vette...

I realize there are other companions, but I bet it will start to seem a bit repetetive.

And I can just imagine running through an instance..."Take your Vette out. My Vette will distract them, have your Vette shoot them from over here..."

Comment by Caliber made on May 28th, 2010 at 12:51pm
Unless the companions are unbalanced or group composition always lacks a specific role, I think there will be more of a spread of the companions.

Also, I think people will develop different play styles that suit them: pure DPS, DPS/tank, tank/heal, etc. If the companions are unbalanced and Vette, for example, is hands down the best, then I could see your situation unfolding, but hopefully everything will be even.

Comment by Elkesai made on May 29th, 2010 at 12:34pm
I see your point, yes. Just from a social aspect, though, it might be a little annoying. Still, knowing exactly which companions the other SW has because you also have the same EXACT ones turns me off to the whole companion thing... It also may make me think twice about being excited about the "story" aspect of the game in the future. Hmm, this gives me more to think about.

"You use your Vette, I'll use my Bo-bo, unless YOU want to use your Bo-bo, in which case, I can use MY Vette. Ah, hell, why don't we just both use Bo-bo or both use Vette...etc.)

I'm seeing people not believing Nar Shadaa wouldn't be fully fleshed out because it's a moon. I see no reason why moons would be treated any differently than planets. Star Wars has never done so. In fact, two of the most pivotal battles in history took place on/over moons, Yavin IV and Endor. Also, Nar Shadaa was given full billing in KOTOR 2.

Oh, and we've had planets and moons together in games before. Just look at SWG, Naboo and Rori anyone?

Comment by r2d2arm made on May 28th, 2010 at 9:38am
Yes, moons with atmosphere can be just like planets and have been seen in previous SW games. The reason why I think Nar Shaddaa, if it is in, will be treated differently is from the Holonet. We have a planets section, and I don't believe Bioware will simply stick moons in there or rename the section to something more appropriate like planetoids. Since Nar Shaddaa is a moon of Hutta, I believe that it will be linked directly with Hutta. Nar Shaddaa could be another area of Hutta accessed by a shuttle from Hutta itself.

I think this is pretty much confirmation that Nar Shaddaa is, in fact, going to be in TOR. Granted, he could just mean Nal Hutta, but that wouldn't make much sense with what he actually said. To me, that's confirmation enough. I agree with you though r2, I think it will be connected to the Nal Hutta page on the website.

To get off the compansions for a moment. This little update gives a few clues about the space flight and player vechicles too. The speeder bike was obvious of course, but people may be overlooking the starship in pic #5 and the fact that the Warrior is than seen walking almost out of said ship into the hangar battle. To me these twp facts lead me to believe we will all get at least some kind of starter ship to get from place to place. When added into the fact that we know the one flashpoint is the Sith ship in deep space under attack, we must concluded they found some way out there and we have evidence of this with the scenes in the hangar of a possilble landing and definite beginning battle of the invading forces.

Any chance DH's people could take a stab at translating what is written on the Wall behind the Sith Warrior and the Jedi as they are walking towards each other? @0:52ish

Comment by r2d2arm made on May 28th, 2010 at 1:20am
I posted this on the forums, but will also copy it here for those that don't frequent the forums as much.

Well, I thought this would take a while, but a brief glance tells me that at least the writing is repeated in various places. Whether or not it means anything is tough to tell still.

The huge slabs, seen during the duel on the bridge and partly seen in the dark chamber with the force choked droid, all have the same exact writing on them. The bottom slab in the bridge pic is simply a rotated and flipped version of the top slab.

There is also another "alphabet" seen in the dark chamber with the droids. Again, the same exact text in this "alphabet" is repeated in two different locations. This "alphabet" may also be present on the larger ruins (the zoomed out shots of the tomb area).

I'm open to any suggestions for actual translations, but from what I've noticed and stated here, these writings could very well be decoration and don't have actual meaning.

Comment by sado made on May 28th, 2010 at 2:32am
The last time we tried to translate the tablets it ended up being just a bunch of random letters with some stuff mixed in that we couldn't even decipher. I'll have to ask Zoid again but originally we came to the conclusion that they were just for decoration as well.

This actually isn't the first time we've seen the SW use saber throw.

In the designing the dark side video, they showed a few clips of SW and SI animation renders. One of them was of a SW throwing his lightsaber. I suppose there's nothing that says that's a SW, but it's kind of implied.

I've slowly been bring Deb over to the dark side but Rob, Joanne, Alyson, Stephanie, Erick, Brian, and Robin are much more Republic than I (on the on-site team). In fact, most of the Community Representatives are pro-Republic, too (I guess that is only to be expected since we've been crafting a team that is about helping people :d_wink:).

For the most part, we like to show both sides of the coin. But sometimes, for one reason or another, we can't always do that simultaneously. But we will definitely do our best to allow both sides to shine and show how awesome they are.

With Nar Shadaa being a moon to Hutta they might treat it just like how WoW treats Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor. They're just two continents that are separated by a shuttle flight. So that they don't have to take up a planet spot.

Yes there is we just haven't been told how many or we have been told but we're just to fickle to commit to the 16 from the timeline video.

Comment by DarkImperialAgent made on May 27th, 2010 at 10:56pm
IDK, Nar Shaddaa is treated as its own enviroment. I don't think they'd apply it was a simple extention of Nal Hutta. Plus let's not forget, Nar Shaddaa is not across the water like in WoW.

Comment by chronium made on May 27th, 2010 at 11:04pm
No it's just orbiting the planet, just think of the water as space and it's exactly the same. The only way to get to the other continent is by boat or air ship but in TOR's case it's shuttle and personal ship. Both continents in WoW are treated as separate environments so that doesn't really makes sense as a argument.

Comment by Drenarb made on May 28th, 2010 at 1:46am
If you use the "space-as-water" theory, you may as well apply that to all planets.

Comment by r2d2arm made on May 27th, 2010 at 10:43pm
I wouldn't say confirmed just yet although certainly increases it chances. If Vette is one of the early companion characters for the Sith Warrior, then that may just be part of her back story with the Sith Warrior.

Comment by DarkImperialAgent made on May 27th, 2010 at 10:52pm
Yea, but I don't think they'd add that in there as part of Vette's backstory if the planet wasn't going to be in-game. Remember, the article also says TOR will have a companion system similiar to Dragon Age where you'll be able to get missions from them if they like you enough. Even if she is an early companion, doesn't mean Sith Warriors won't be able to get a mission from her.

Comment by MrPhire made on May 27th, 2010 at 10:47pm
Very true. It will be very nice if they add in moons. Even if they are just flashpoints, moons would be a nice addition. Then again we're getting 12+ planets. And they all have large explorable areas. That is a "shit-ton" [we should vote for that to be a legal measurement. For other purposes we could call it a crap-ton] of area. Which then makes it seem why would we have moons.

It's also repeated in this new article that Sith Marauder is a duel-wielding advanced class making me think two lightsabers will almost be mandatory to utilize that path to it's fullest (since it's a DPS-focused AC). Since we've only seen pictures of the Juggernaut with a single-bladed lightsaber, it's makes me wonder who will get to use a double-bladed lightsaber? Maybe both? When you think of a double-bladed saber, you think it would fit with Marauder better since you're working with two blades...though connected. But a double-bladed saber could also be used to aggressively bludgeon an opponent which is what the Juggernaut will specialize in.

Comment by sgtsavage made on May 27th, 2010 at 11:59pm
Probably all the force users can use almost any style but the advanced classes will give bonuses or special moves if you utilize a certain saber style (single, double, dual). Like it was shown in the abilities section of the SI a few months back, it showed a certain move and it said in parentheses underneath (Dual-Blade required for this ability). Thats my guess at least. It would not make sense to limit hilt use to any class but it makes sense to give specialized moves for certain classes that use the hilt (s) in a certain way.

Comment by MrPhire made on May 27th, 2010 at 10:29pm
Sith Inqusitor uses Saberstaff. Der....

Of course then again if you go by the DH speculation of the SI they don't specialize in melee... So I dunno what to say there.

Anyone know what language is written on the Korriban tombs? It sure doesn't look like aurebesh. Is it just gibberish? Wasn't able to find any references to any Star Wars language translation key other then the Aurebesh one.

With the option to outfitting the companion characters, I think it becomes more likely that the species that might be companions will also be playable.

it was epic!!

The Sith Warrior screenshot with the other players on it has another Rattataki in it. The Rattataki also appears to be a Bounty Hunter again, could suggest faction specific species.

Trooper will have a team as companion!

Comment by JimtheJedi made on May 27th, 2010 at 9:03pm
Is that confirmed? From this article? Or from where?

Comment by Chino made on May 27th, 2010 at 9:12pm
Well they have not confirmed, but if you look carefully in the video there is a trooper firing green shots and there are 3 other troopers in the same outfit firing too. This was already seen in the combat video and one screenshot i think!

Comment by Caliber made on May 28th, 2010 at 9:24am
NPCs. A lot of the Trooper NPCs look identical to PCs.

Comment by chronium made on May 27th, 2010 at 10:35pm
The devs have already said that you can only have 1 companion out at a time. So more likely the other troopers are just other players.

Comment by Chino made on May 28th, 2010 at 12:34am
They might work as a team equivalent to one companion and not as 3 companions. Well just have to wait.

Comment by sgtsavage made on May 27th, 2010 at 11:48pm
I agree with Chronium on that as that has been stated multiple times. I wonder though if maybe there was a team aspect, but they were all very weak being equivalent to one companion. Thats enough random speculation from me haha, but ya unfortunately I dont think the team aspect will be the case.

- Nar Shaddaa as playable planet
- Companion releases
- Mounts??

Comment by LethalSharpshooter made on May 27th, 2010 at 8:12pm
There's a lot of stuff that have "leaked" now, if that Sith Warrior trailer was supposed to be up on the official site tomorrow/later this day.

About 47 seconds into the movie we see a space battle in the background, and a grey starfighter flying past. From what I can see, that starfighter doesn't look like the ones seen in the Decieved trailer.
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Sith_starfighter_%28Great_Galactic_War%29

Interesting. Though not even close as interesting as the rest of the video and the possible reveal of Nar Shaddaa! :D

Comment by Varnsta made on May 27th, 2010 at 9:31pm
Yeah another clue for player owned ships. Hes walking away from a visibly hovering ship, and behind him, seperating the docking bay from outer space is the much seen blue forcefield 'usable' door effect. Sooooooo he flew in right?

Still too vague about actual player controlled combat outside tho. Doesnt look like it to me tbh

"One of the Sith Warrior's companions will be Vette, a wisecracking pirate of the Twi'lek race with a dark past."

"... the young pirate found a new lease on life on the smuggler planet of Nar Shaddaa, where she meets your character..."

Comment by Jaswar made on May 27th, 2010 at 7:17pm
well there's the trinity system for you , but they built it w/in your character ala companions... I can see my self doing alot of solo stuff in the game w/out the need for a pick up group in this game.... I like it though . could not stand spamming the chat channels for hours trying to get a group togehter ..looks like no need for that anymore.

Comment by Loekii made on May 27th, 2010 at 6:36pm
I am glad to see confirmation of the 'affection' system.

It is nice to know that companions will have some sort of personality, rather than just being a robot, and it also is nice to see that the personality can change based upon the players decisions.

Question: Does this mean Trads can might be a companion race? http://pcmedia.ign.com/pc/image/article/109/1093317/star-wars-the-old-republic-20100527102446307-000.jpg

Comment by Grimfate made on May 27th, 2010 at 5:54pm
Anyone else see a problem with loot with companions? I mean dont get me wrong i think the idea of having a buddy along side me throughout the whole game is BA, but will people be trying to gear out themselves and their companion? maybe there will be companion only gear... idk just a question not doomsaying or anything.

Your sill in the WoW mind set (or any other traditional mmo) as most of us are...But i dont see a problem .this is bioware after all companions are there speciality ;)

I think it's about time to officially rename this whole thing to "thursday update". How are these friday updates anymore? Ridiculous...

On the content of the update i can only comment that it's many words again without saying much. I hope that, like last week, the real friday update will contain something more nutricious. If so, it's of course more than good that things slowly start to come into shape now...

I can only hope that the pics in this Thursday Preview aren't all the pics we'll see in the Friday Update like last week's Hoth one, where the only thing new was the video on the Hoth page, with the screenies/concept art/lore all given to us with the Preview. There better be more pics and info in the Friday Update than what we saw today in the IGN thing.

Comment by Korrick made on May 27th, 2010 at 6:50pm
Well every time they have given us an early update on Thursday they have also given us an update on something else. I for one am glad they come out a day earlier, it just means you don't have to wait an extra day.

Comment by DarkImperialAgent made on May 27th, 2010 at 4:58pm
It looks like they're finally going to get into discussing companion characters. If TOR has a companion emotion system like Dragon Age:Origins....it'll be a damn good system. One of the reasons I think DA:O works and gets too much hate is because of how connected I felt with the companions that some other RPGs can't replicate. And Bioware has just gotten better and better at this aspect of RPing. It also seems as if companions will have unlockable side quests. So now we have the

- Class story missions
- Planetary side story missions (Factions, random NPC quest givers)
- Companion side story missions

Comment by sgtsavage made on May 27th, 2010 at 3:56pm
I will love this update, I have been waiting for companions forever now. However, I hate it when the friday update surprise factor is ruined!!!! That update is kinda like some tiny thing to look forward to at the end of the week and its usually an awesome surprise... but the last 3 weeks we have received a "Preview" of the friday update. I bet the only people who might feel the same would be more towards those who have followed the game since October 2008 (or some other lengthy amount of time) but I just sorta miss the surprises of the friday updates. Can't wait to read all that is in store for us tomorrow tho!!!!!

Comment by Zerak made on May 27th, 2010 at 4:08pm
I'd wager there will be other updates too, like Biographies, inhabitants or a timeline, always been more than one when we've had a preview lately.

Comment by chronium made on May 27th, 2010 at 4:05pm
Well it's still somewhat of a surprise because we don't how they're going to present the companions info. They could be doing a holonet page or a Dev Dispatch video.

Comment by sgtsavage made on May 27th, 2010 at 4:30pm
Thats the only hope I have that is keeping the excitement factor going hahaha

Comment by Xavier made on May 27th, 2010 at 4:07pm
Or, it could go in the games systems area with Advanced Classes.

Comment by r2d2arm made on May 27th, 2010 at 3:43pm
I'm thinking we'll get a new holonet tab for them, but there is also the possibility of having the companions for each class added to the class page itself. Either way, companions being officially revealed tomorrow, on my birthday, is cool!

Yeah, pretty sure this will go in the same area that Advanced Classes went in. That blurb over at IGN sounds like the opening paragraph they did for Advanced Classes. Excited to see what else that tab will provide.

Oh, and happy early birthday. :D

Comment by r2d2arm made on May 27th, 2010 at 3:49pm
Hmm, true, they could just give a generic introduction to companions without actually revealing directly any of the companions. Thanks Drenarb!

Comment by Xavier made on May 27th, 2010 at 3:33pm
It looks like it's a devblog. Maybe they put it under game systems. I don't know we'll see. Don't get me wrong, it was a good read, but I hope there is more to Tomorrow's update.

Comment by Posiden made on May 27th, 2010 at 3:31pm
The Trandoshan is the PC and the Jedi is the companion imo. In most screenshots the PC is in the foreground and the companion is in the background. The Jedi looks a bit too "plain" to be the PC.

Comment by Korrick made on May 27th, 2010 at 6:53pm
I really don't think you can get a jedi as a companion, but I could be wrong we will have to wait and see.

Comment by Zodiark made on May 27th, 2010 at 5:48pm
Yea well the update is based on companions so thats what the pic is centred around.
Although later on in the game i guess as a non force user you may run into a jedi/sith type companion for a time..that would be awesome :P

Comment by Drenarb made on May 27th, 2010 at 4:34pm
I really don't think the Trandoshan is the PC.

Comment by PercMerc made on May 27th, 2010 at 4:17pm
I don't know if I completely agree. They are highlighting companions in the article so why wouldn't they highlight them in the screenshots? And they're talking about gearing your companion so maybe they're trying to feature how wicked awesome your companion can look. You could be right though. If the Trandoshan is a PC, what class do you think it is?

Comment by Zerak made on May 27th, 2010 at 3:38pm
Yeah, agreed, if they wanted to focus on the companions as a standalone, the droid would also be in the foreground. Not to mention that that awesome guy by far outshine the Jedi... usually not what you see when it comes to companions.

Comment by JediCosmin made on May 27th, 2010 at 3:31pm
This is the update I have been waiting since it was confirmed.
Companions make the story wonderful, they define your character and influence you just as much as you influence them.
