E3: Interview with Daniel Erickson
by Dover
, posted June 16th, 2010 at 4:20 PM
We had the pleasure to interview Daniel Erickson of BioWare about companions, warzones, player ships, party dynamics, and more.

The video portion is above, and the transcription is after the jump. Enjoy.

Today focused on player interactions and how group play works. Earlier, we were able to see the first live demo of group play against NPC targets. Would you like to go into a little bit kind of the system and the design? There are a lot of questions about the trinity system and healing, tanking, and things like that.

Erickson: Yeah. When we first started, we really wanted to make sure that we included the things that made parties work strongly together, but we didn't want to wind up locked into a hard trinity system. One of the big reasons we went for the advanced classes, and allowed people to take very different routes with each of the character classes, was to give a broader range than just the straight healer, tank. You know, "I'm going to be the DPS guy."

Today showed the core dynamics are still there, and you guys actually got to see them saying that this guy is playing tank, this guy is playing this. What you didn't get to see were companion characters coming into the mix, and companion characters can be used to amplify or soften what role you're taking. So if you're going to play your tank guy, but you're going to bring your healing companion character, it is much, much different than going to play tank and bringing another tank with you. Or if you were going to play super DPS guy, bring your DPS companion as well and to just be the massive, massive damage dealing team. Same way, I tend to be the guy that plays a lot of priests; I tend to be the guy that plays a lot of healing roles and I very much like the, "I'm going to be the healer and I'm going to go through and make myself the super healer, and I am going to bring my healing companion and were just going to be a medical ward."

In regards to what we saw with four players on a single team, one of each of the Republic classes, you're mentioning companion characters integrate into groups. Will we be able to see a one to one ratio? If there is a party of four PCs, will there be four PCs and four companions or do companions take up player slots?

Erickson: No, everyone will be bringing their companions with them.

An optimal team would be four players and four companions?

Erickson: Correct.

That would lead into a lot of dynamics in regards to what you are talking about.

Erickson: Absolutely. A lot of discussions of "hey, we thought we were going to have a group that stacked like this," but we didn't. Maybe we don't have our healer that night, so instead, "hey, why doesn't everybody grab their healing companion. And you know what? We are probably still going to be able to run this thing."

Right, so supplementing the group composition through the companions.

Erickson: Absolutely. In what you want to do personally or what your group is missing and you guys decide as a group what you're going to do.

Sticking with the multiplayer combat that we saw in the demo, just a second ago, one thing that is a little bit more class specific. You had the Smuggler being in a cover position doing a lot of covering fire and assisting. In addition, he used one of his Advanced Class abilities to heal.

Erickson: Correct.

Three of the characters in the group, including the Smuggler, were Level 8. Is this purely for demo purposes?

Erickson: Purely for demo purposes. Not indicative at all of where you will get your Advanced Classes or the powers you would have at that ability.

One of the things covered were the players ships. We learned a lot about how they are designed towards a meeting place and a gathering place for you and your friends and your companions. Can you go a little bit more in-depth on how it works into the game?

Erickson: Sure. Well, basically we have just shown the first couple. So, we know there is a ship for every type of class; you guys got to see the Sith ship; you guys got to see the Jedi ship. There is a Trooper ship, there is a Smuggler ship, and they are all different and they are all unique inside. Very, very cool. They work very much in the Ebon Hawk model from KoTOR. Your companion characters live there. You have personal space. Obviously it is an MMO, so there needs to be an environment that you can socialize in. That is as far as we have gone so far. There have been a whole lot of other things lighting up the boards right now and a few people that have made some rather facetious announcements. Everything beyond that, at this point, is pure speculation.

Since it is a ship, it would travel with you from planet to planet?

Erickson: Absolutely. This is your means of getting around. Once you've got a ship, then you've got the galaxy and you can say, "I can go anywhere I want."

You mentioned customization, and that it is a huge part of all the marketing that we see with The Old Republic. You mentioned that each class will get their own ship, and you actually mentioned it in the demo that all the ships will be customizable, so that one Smuggler ship is not identical to another Smuggler ship, in regards to the things that go with it?

Erickson: No. Actually, I think that is where some of speculation got thrown out there, because we did two demos back to back. We did the demo on the ships and then we did the demo on the class customization and people merged them in their brains.

Good to know, interesting clarification.

Erickson: We have made no announcements or no discussion about ship customization.

Another focus was mentioned during the EA press conference yesterday; that Alderaan is going to be the first Warzone for PvP combat. Could you go a little bit more into depth how the setup is going to be integrated into the game, like the ships were?

Erickson: Unfortunately, we can't. There are a lot of different ways to get someone to a WarZone. Do you want to do it through physical space? Are we going to let people teleport in? Are we going to do all that? Those are all game design decisions that we have to have a population in there and pushing. We obviously have some ideas, but the answer that no one ever likes is we're going to go the way that works best with our game.

Of course. But then you can state that it is an independent instanced zone, like it is a separate distinct zone?

Erickson: Correct. It is a distinct place that you can play this controlled experience with multiple people.

And in the same theme that goes along with that, how it is a specific instanced zone, are we going to be seeing specific game types linked to the zone? Like objective-based combat or death match or capture the flag. Or do we know if the zones are going to be focused on a single objective type game play or is it just broad PvP?

We actually do not know at this point, because again we are playing with a whole bunch of different ideas. Obviously there is a lot out there to draw from and so it is got to be a base between: how many of these are we going to have and what side of stuff works the best? And the big one is the one we are just getting into: just doing all our multiplayer testing and multiplayer fun and that is going to determine what we choose to do with our multiplayer combat.

Honestly DH, you guys are so good at pulling words out of BioWare's/Lucas Arts' shut mouths (no offensive feelings to BW/LA ofcourse). Thank you for the interview and I hope we can follow you guys for many many years after the first public launch of SW:TOR.

Wow, an interview from E3 that we actually learened something in. The rest of the interviews from the "big names" of gaming entertainment were lame. The IGN interview was weaksauce, and the G4TV interview during their "30-minute demo" was rediculous. First time to show the interiors of player ships and hardly any questions about it.

Anyway, good job, Darth Hater, as usual.

Comment by Deidare made on June 21st, 2010 at 3:33pm
Well yeah g4tv sucked with there interview because it was basically designed for people who hadn't even heard of TOR yet. And IGN just is terrible when it comes to any interview. But darthhater you guys get it right, getting the stuff we have yet to know. Awesome job.

Comment by Chabrikov made on June 17th, 2010 at 3:28pm
Hey! I just made an account to point how awesome and giving this interview was. Very good questions asked, and lots of new stuffs learned.

Also, that fella Daniel Erickson is a funny guy. Love it when he illustrated the contrast between the Imperial Agent and Bounty Hunter mentality/gameplay.

Very good job, Darth Hater!

Comment by Kussy made on June 17th, 2010 at 1:03pm
They do have story.

Comment by mordoc71 made on June 17th, 2010 at 12:38pm
Great interview. Had a big grin when he went into how focused an agent might get then a BH comes running through "woohoo". Can't wait to get into this game.

Comment by Roshido made on June 17th, 2010 at 9:31am
You guys are onto something. I thought that was a well delivered interview. You also got him to say Hate on lol... I knew this was the spot to get my info..

Just wanted to add my appreciation and congratulations for this interview. It is the best thing on TOR to come out of E3 by far.

Fantastic job on this interview, the more I know the more excited I am :-)

"... - WE HAVE STORY!"
hahah good one ;)

Thanks for the interview, sounded like you were in a hurry, but you got everything put together. Superb.

Comment by HarryTruman made on June 17th, 2010 at 4:13am
This really stands out amongst the terrible TOR interviews at E3. You guys at Darth Hater have done a bang-up job once again, so much more informative and professional than that crap at G4, for example. Well done.

Comment by Viruschill made on June 17th, 2010 at 2:22am
Once again you guys at DH prove to be EPICALLY AWESOME. TY for all the hard work. The one question that I have been the most curious is, do you get more than one playable character per account? I believe in one interview I heard someone say something to the effect of you can log in choose your character and go play. Does that been you do get more than one character to play though, if anyone knows the answer please let me know TY

Comment by Azuzu made on June 17th, 2010 at 2:08am
I made an account just to say that interview was amazing, you asked great questions, imagine all the boring interviews he's doing for other sites (i.e. IGN/G4 interviews were rushed and lamesauce). You were able to get him genuinely excited about the subject matter.

this community is great, deeply thought-provoking and objective.

Comment by Keshrin made on June 17th, 2010 at 1:56am
One thing I'd like to know is just how difficult it's going to be for someone who chooses a class like a BH or IA on Hutta to group with a friend who has chosen one of the Sith classes on Korriban.

DH Team
Comment by Zoidberg made on June 17th, 2010 at 11:25am
There was a PLACEHOLDER droid in the starport when I went exploring on Hutta. I know he is placeholder because his name had placeholder in it and every line he had had placeholder at the begining. From what I gather he may serve as an interplanetary taxi vendor, but all he told me at the time was services are not available right now.

Comment by flem1 made on June 17th, 2010 at 2:09am
Depends if one of you has gotten far enough to acquire your ship or not, I suspect...

Comment by Keshrin made on June 17th, 2010 at 2:49am
That could be true but I kind of see Ships as something you don't get till quite a bit later. I'm thinking that there will be a transport system you can purchase passage on at the eariier levels. Course it's just a theory. We'll have to wait and see.

Comment by Cynaes made on June 17th, 2010 at 6:52am
I think you acquire your ship pretty fast - once you lift of from your starting planet.

After all, the smuggler's story starts with a stolen ship - it only makes sense that at the end of this very storyline, he will be rewarded with getting his ship back.

A different questions regarding ships though ... the interviews/articles are notoriously unclear about whether they're gonna be more than one ship per class. I've seen both, plural and singular, attributed to devs. Not sure which way DE went, because I watched the interview at 3 am and I'm not sure I remember everything, but I think he said Smuggler ship, Trooper ship, Sith ship ... instead of ships. Any chance you might get an answer about this from anyone at Bioware? Although I fear that we will only have one ship, there's always HOPE ;)

Comment by Jaswar made on June 17th, 2010 at 12:45pm
Isnt it great that we are gonna have some ships :) happy camper here .....it is so cool that we can bring our house with us all over the galaxy

Comment by cdstephens made on June 17th, 2010 at 12:53am
Nice interview. I personally would have asked why the Jedi class were not present though.

Comment by blackie_morgan made on June 17th, 2010 at 1:31am
It took them a while to show us the sith side after the first trailer. be patient and they will come :)

Comment by Posiden made on June 17th, 2010 at 1:04am
Sean already told us why there would be no Jedi.

"It's not that they are neglected; I'd say just the opposite. Some might say that the Jedi is probably the most iconic role out of all of Star Wars and so we want to ensure that the first time they are seen publicly, they are definitely on the right path.

And while I know some of you dislike it, we really prefer only showing things when they are ready to be shown. Have no worries, the Jedi Knight and the Jedi Consular will definitely be given their time to shine."

Comment by cdstephens made on June 17th, 2010 at 1:26am
That's not exactly a straight answer imo. Then again, it IS BW.

Comment by JediCosmin made on June 17th, 2010 at 1:48am
I share your concern, but as long as the Jedi becomes the a class we can truly say that we love playing, then let them take their time. It was nice to see them in action during the gameplay demo, even though the Knight was in the distance :P

Comment by Krisis made on June 16th, 2010 at 11:50pm
Very cool guys. It's like this, BioWare has planned out everything they will reveal and talk about in interviews and what not. So the order goes: They make us speculate on a general idea, they release that general idea, we speculate some more on that vague, general idea, they come in and clarify the speculation, it is then confirmed. So what I am getting at is, no matter how many times you interview these guys, you will never get anything new other than what has already been released. The only thing I'm getting from interviews is an opinion from a developer and more detailed clarification to already known info.

Comment by Varteras made on June 16th, 2010 at 11:45pm
I will say this. Daniel Erickson and Dallas Dickinson are my two favorite guys working on this game. They both seem genuinely excited about it just like most of us are. They always seem to be happy to talk about the game and always seem so close to bursting into a rant, telling us everything about it that they're not supposed to. Especially Daniel. The one guy I really don't like listening to is... well his name begins with a J and ends with an ake Neri. He just comes off as unenthused and there have been a few times I thought I saw in him a burning desire to punch the next person who asks him about the game. Just my thoughts. :P

Comment by KindarMosfet made on June 16th, 2010 at 11:33pm
Daniel about the thought process of the Bounty Hunters mentality...

" And they just had this discussion about the Great Hunt, and he's just like "whatever let me blow stuff up" "

Classic.

Comment by HorusAximand made on June 16th, 2010 at 11:22pm
Honestly it seems like the devs are more interested in talking to Darth Hater than IGN, couldn't imagine why. /sarcasm off

Comment by shadowfyre made on June 16th, 2010 at 11:04pm
I'm hoping to see ship customisation to the same extent as something like The Sims. Where we can move furniture around and theres endless amounts of different things. Also i hope it has a garage with our ground vehicles in it, like in Mass Effect.

Comment by Jaswar made on June 17th, 2010 at 1:24am
ya that would be great , but it terms of major reveals ....seems as if this game has along way to go ..........thought this e3 was gonna blow me out of the water...we learned new stuff but ....i thought there was gonna be alot and i mean alot more...ohhh welll..........just have to wait and see

Thank you for the wonderful interview DH. If you guys are going to be in LA through Friday/Saturday let me know, I'll buy you guys a round of drinks. =o)

I was rather pleased that they took the time to mention that they want to reward players who want to wander off the beaten path and "goof around".

I found myself laughing when he went into detail about the Imperial Agent taking so much time to prepare and plan for a strategic battle, only to have a reckless Bounty Hunter run past him and blow shit up.

He did a good job of making the Agent feel like the more intelligent choice (in terms of storyline and depth of character).

By far the best interview at E3 of SWTOR. You guys rock. Thanks for putting this together.

FINALLY! (Not to hate on any other interviews) But this was very exact and to the point. Great questions from DH and clarifications from DE. The one thing that has caught me off guard at E3 this year has been the discussion of scope. I really believe BW understands the concept of scope and they understand the importance it will play in TOR. But again, thanks DH awesome questions (obviously you guys know what you are talking about) well done.

DE really seems like a nice guy too! ^^

To everyone worried about ship customization: From what I saw and such I think he was basically saying nothing is truly confirmed yet. Not that there won't be.

Very good questions DH team - actually cleared some things up like the 4 players with 4 Companions in an instance group (plus a dpser can have a dps Companion, or healer with a healer Companion etc), ship customisation comments cleared up, "Warzones" are a form of instanced PvP (but how you get into them still being decided) etc. While he may have not answered everything, there was some clarity and focus on the 'answers' that seemingly gave us some direction ;-) Really good 17mins to watch. I feel informed /salute

This was a great interview. It was good to finally hear some more solid stuff about the companions...and it lightens my mood about the group combat video. While I have a solid group of friends I will be playing with, not everyone will be on all the time, and not every player will have that luxury. To see that companions can fill rolls is a smart move, and a very casual oriented move. When a player logs on and has an hour to play, they don't want to spend 30 mins looking for a group, or a healer, or a tank. Now they don't have to, very smart move on Biowares part. I still don't like the idea of Daniel's "super healer" though...from the sounds of it, healers seem like they will be very important and very much needed in this game...hopefully they do healing right and make it more strategic like say AoC was or even WAR. A healer shouldn't be able to endlessly spam heals until the cows come home...it should be a means to slow down death, not prevent it...it should be up to the whole party to CC and mitigate damage.

Warzones are sounding like BGs or say a Wintergrasp like area. We'll have to see how it plays out. Thanks again for the interview, keep up the good work.

Comment by permacrete made on June 16th, 2010 at 6:22pm
I also want to note how cool it was for Daniel Erickson to show BioWare's appreciation for the fan community and chat with you for 20 minutes. DH might not be as big a name as IGN or G4, but you still get a good share of face time, and that's very very cool.

Comment by McClure made on June 17th, 2010 at 12:19am
I would almost think that guys like Daniel Erickson would want to talk to DH moreso than IGN or other big-name press like that. At IGN, for example, they ask terribly vague and generic questions and then move onto the next booth. At DH, they are assured that meaningful questions will be asked by people who very much care what the answer is. Talking is much more fun to do if the person you're talking to cares about what you are saying.

Comment by Jaswar made on June 16th, 2010 at 6:22pm
I really hope that also there are also OPEN WORLD PVP'N ,as well, and not just the same ol enclosed "battlegrounds". I really hope they will not go that route . Its a complete takeaway from the "Immersion quality" of any game IMO. Anything that is enclosed w/in a world ...well for me is not engaging and completly never rewarding. I want that feeling of the unknown when traveling around the galaxy , "hey whats up around that corner ....maybe we should be careful and load out our weapons to make sure,"

It was always some of my fondest memories when open world pvp was engaging, fun, and definitly frustrating at times

Enjoyed to watch the Interview. Its really the best ive seen so far. All the housing stuff, pvp stuff aswell.
For me it would nice to know, whats with "Open PvP"? Last year, the devs announced that SWTOR will have PvP. Now they announced "Warzones", an instanced battle between teh dark and light side.
So, whats outside of these "Warzones"? Will we able to fight against each other? Maybe even from the same fraction?
Once again, you did an awesome job. Its an very good interview - love it, love you, love swtor!

Dr. Greg Zeschuk in E3 2010 EA press conference said:
"We want a PLAYER SHIP to represent not only the rite of passage in the game, but also an expression of his or her PERSONAL STYLE."
So, I'd say, there will be ship customization. Da boss said it and when a boss says something, it happens:). Not sure ship interior or ship exterior though:).

Oh, and thanks for the excellent interview!

Comment by theunwarshed made on June 16th, 2010 at 6:08pm
i could've sworn that DE said in the past that you wouldnt get a companion of the same archetype as the class you are playing (ie. SW getting a "tank" comp); however, he seems to contradict this with this most current interview when he says that he likes to play "healers" and he will be whipping out his healer comp for a mega-healer duo.

also, i'm sure i read or saw a vid of some game site's coverage that specifically stated ships were customizable-at least DE clarifies this misunderstanding. the question still remains if we will be able to have multiple ships/ground vehicles (for purchase), etc. at least each class will have his/her own ship type.

i have to say that im a little disappointed with the state of pvp at this point, but we have a year to look forward to more on that front. i swear i heard him say in a previous interview that "all of the systems were in" and they were just adding content/art at this point (whatever that means).

Comment by Varteras made on June 16th, 2010 at 6:13pm
There are multiple companions you can acquire throughout your story. It was simply said that the Sith Warrior would not get several tanking companions since the Sith Warrior already has the potential to tank. They may get one. I can see this being a similar situation for a Consular who can already heal depending on their spec. They then wouldn't get several healing companions.

Did I miss something he said that made it sound like space combat is out? I watched the whole interview twice now and nothing he said ever made me think "damn, no space combat".

Comment by tfganhao made on June 16th, 2010 at 6:57pm
i wrote that since the part he talked about the ships, he made sure to focus on the "Its like the Ebon Hawk", etc.

I might be wrong ofc, but it was the feel that i got with the interview.

Comment by Varteras made on June 16th, 2010 at 7:44pm
I was actually struck more by the part where they asked him if we're going to be able to fly around or if we just 'teleport' in our ship to the next planet he used the old line "we're not talking about that right now" with a smile. That added onto the interview that Massively had with Rich Vogel in which he said that they have some cool things for space that they aren't talking about right now because they're not finalized yet.

Brilliant Questions. Really enjoyed the interview and it seemed like you really knew what to ask.

Just wish they could all have been answered. I was under the impression though that there were a lot of world quests that can be taken by anyone of any class. So my Jedi or my trooper can take those quests. The way Erickson restated that NO content would be the same is this not the case or are they very minor sub quests that don't really have any impact in the game play and not necessary to progress my character and really only there to offer filler quests to make a couple of extra credits?

Likewise I would love to know why Alderaan is the first PvP instance. Does this mean it will be level specific so that if I am enjoying the story quest and having a good time I have to pull out of it before hitting say level 11 to go PvP to get those rewards (much like happens in WAR) before I outlevel that PvP zone and can't then go back and get the nice clothing accessory to make me look even more evil.

I would also be really keen to know how Story is going to work and give meaningful consequences. I've heard that much of the game is instance free and they are big social areas. But the story only continues once you enter the instanced area as this is where the widow of the captain can accost you or whatever the results of the previous story paths you chose. Does this mean the story and consequences of such is very much a single player experience only happening away from the multiplayer regions. While the MMO aspect of the game happens in the open world. So that if I do kill the captain and I'm having fun with my guild in the cantina I'm not going to have said Widow come in and slap me in front of them. So the story isn't going to impact any of the multiplay aspects of the game unless I have invited a friend along to that particular instance.

Comment by ValiceKohn made on June 16th, 2010 at 10:08pm
With respect to the last paragraph....

I personally believe it would be impossible for them to implement your story arch/line into the open world story. Because that would mean that everyone you are with in said "cantina" would have there own stories interrupt the "social aspect" your achieving. All though the idea is cool, it's not feasible. So open world will be just like any other MMO, but your story will be based on your quest line / instances. Sorry :(

Comment by Korithian made on June 17th, 2010 at 7:23pm
I think your right. Where the problem lies, at least for me is that they don't allow open world story to continue cause I may have killed the captain you have spared him and suddenly a woman that should be thanking you is slaping me. The encounter is player specific and therefore modern convention states it should happen in an instance.

But Modern convention makes no more sence, if I take you along with me into the instance where I get slapped and you spare the captain it makes no more sence that shes having a go at the two of us, from your story point of view but you accept you are my guest and we will play down my story arch. We can do yours after. Likewise if your going to be a stickler for things making sence (not saying you are, more a royal you meaning people that are being sticklers and don't want open world story) then all these magic instance red door ways don't make any sence.

So if the devs have accepted individual stories play out in individual instances breaking the immersion as you walk through one and leave people behind, why not allow individual stories to play out in the open world. So your just walking along enjoying an early morning munchin when you run into a jedi whose master you killed earlier. Rather than having too very seperate games one open world and one instanced which don't overlap.

Obviously more of a question I'd love to see asked to the devs than expecting anyone here to have an answer for.

I think Alderaan warzone is the first warzone they put in the game, the one they used for "testing" the warzone concept.

No necessarily the first warzone the players will see.

About the no repeatable content bit, I assumed he was referring to the story-specific content, not side-quests etc. So, same-faction classes will share the faction part of their stories later on in the game, but players are different factions will have totally different story content.

Comment by shgfosho made on June 16th, 2010 at 11:09pm
Yea, I believe you are right. Especially since he referred to the "opposite" roles of the two factions, Sith Warrior and Jedi Knight I believe. But classes on the same side will share some faction-specific quests.

Besides that, I was very impressed with your interview DH, you guys know how to get it done. Most informative interview, hands down. GJ.

So any other big reveals going on ??????? great Interview ...like the ability of small specialized groups....then popping out our companions to make an 4 man to a 8 man .......its gonna be alot easier to get groups together to go star warsing together.

Ya seems space combat is out........ if anything it would seem that once aboard your ship in space...that i can see alot of side quest mini games there...like being caught unexpectedly by a tractor beam and then working with your team to get off the ship that just captured you....maybe things of that nature.

also im dying to find out if we are gonna get ground transportation...like swoop bikes and such ....rideable mounts to explore ....and not just hump all over the planets on our feet. hoping that we have the use and freedom on ground mounts instead of a taxi system....I can see the use of taxi's on like Coruscant, but if we hangin on Tatooine it would be great to get on our speeders.....and goooooooooooooooooooo

Nice interview! :D

Comment by tfganhao made on June 16th, 2010 at 5:28pm
some noteworthy things imo:

- The companion + Player Classes will make a normal party have 8 characters, which makes the "trinity" concept fade a bit, imo, coz if u want (this is if i'm hearing this straight) u'll have a tank, dps and healer companion and can just pick 4 comp. healers and go to town. (4 dps chars + 4 healer companions clearing instances w00t!)

- No ship customization aparently (i think he mencioned it wasnt even discussed). If true, i'd say thats a big nail in the "space combat" coffin. (i'd rather NOT have it than to have a crappy system tbh)

- Origin worlds are big but are a grain of sand compared to the other ones :D

- Warzones apparently are instanced, so i think its leaning towards a WoW BG system (or maybe Wintergrasp which has quests and an instance inside), while it is not what i was expecting (WaR's RvR zones), i don't foresee a problem if they design it well.

Great job doing that interview, useful questions asked (altough some didnt got answered :(... ehheeh). Keep up the good work!

Comment by gstommylee made on June 16th, 2010 at 8:25pm
Tfganhao no it doesn't on the space combat front. The fact they only mention that there will be player ships they didn't go into greater detail regarding player ships.

Comment by engrey made on June 16th, 2010 at 5:32pm
In the G4 interview the question about making your party all DPS was answered and it will not work. You still have to balance your team out and bring some of everything to get the job done.

Comment by Hobowan made on June 16th, 2010 at 5:44pm
Yep, but that party consisted out of 4 players with no companions. The important thing about companions that hasn't been talked about much lately is that if you have your companion out, you yourself _should_ be weaker than without a companion. Especially for instances, adding fire/healpower to the group by popping 4 companions would kill the balance. So let's assume that you have 50% firepower when your comp. is out, who serves as the other 50%. When 4 companions add to 200% (meaning two full players), the 4 real players represent the other 200%. Why would in this scenario a pair of healer companions (representing one healer player in a no-comp scenario) not work?

The point is that relative to the group's size (be it 4 players or 4+4 companions) a certain piece of the cake (most likely one player, 25%) has to fill a healing role, while one other has to be the tank. These 25% can be either one player or a certain ammount of companions.

Of course the 50/50 split of power is unlikely, i just chose it to make my point

Comment by -Apocalypse- made on June 16th, 2010 at 5:47pm
Game is balanced around having the companions out, it becomes significantly harder if you do not bring them along, and it is a way of giving players a way of adding "challenge".

You're expected to always have companions, they have just been disabled so we don't see them in action so far.

Comment by Hobowan made on June 16th, 2010 at 5:52pm
I don't know what source you're basing that on, but it has never before been said that dismissing your companions would be the "hard mode" of the game. The philosophy was always that if you prefer a more grouped style of play you use your comp, if you like to be on your own you dont use him. There wasn't any information about difficulty attached to one of the comments regarding comps

Comment by HarryTruman made on June 16th, 2010 at 5:41pm
Well, they actually didn't specifically say that. What they said is that if they didn't have a full group, they would wipe, and if each player didn't do their job, they would wipe. They did *not* say that they needed every player role type to win. It is a significant difference. Remember, too, that this group did not have companions, so players had to fill every role. In that video if they had a couple healing companions, they clearly wouldn't have needed that Consular healbotting the Trooper, etc.

So, like he said in the interview, it seems like they're doing more of a "soft trinity," which is good because that means group roles are important, but the actual act of *grouping* will not be as frustrating.

Comment by Posiden made on June 16th, 2010 at 5:43pm
But they did say its not like you could bring 4 tanks to a group and still succeed.

Comment by engrey made on June 16th, 2010 at 7:09pm
Exactly, so it is implied that if you bring four troopers to a big group fight you are going to have a tough time. Even if you all had companions that could heal, while it may be possible it will not be optimal.

Comment by Lockehart made on June 17th, 2010 at 2:37pm
I'm guessing there will just be a limit on party members period, and you can fill that limit with either players or companions. So for example if the party limit is 4, you and a friend can both have your companions out, but if there are 3 players, one of you keeps your companion stowed. If you have 4 players, then no one could have companions out. 8+ characters in a group seems unwieldly.

Edit: Upon actually watching the video, I now realize this is actually addressed word for word - so....disregard this shameful post.

Comment by Raul made on June 16th, 2010 at 5:28pm
I'm wondering/expecting/hoping companions will be smart enough to heal the entire group and not just the player who he is part of :p

Comment by flem1 made on June 16th, 2010 at 6:22pm
Have you checked out the Tactics system in Dragon Age? If (as I predict) anything like that is in TOR, a companion healer could well be *smarter* than most PC ones. ;)

Very good interview. I can tell the DH team took the time to come up with questions that would actually be answered. I love Daniel Erickson's power droid shirt!

Good to hear the clarification on ship customization. Rather odd that Daniel mentioned the Jedi get their ship and the Sith get their ship, not the specific classes themselves.

Comment by azarhal made on June 16th, 2010 at 9:23pm
I think that the Jedi classes get the same ship and the two Sith classes get the Fury. If you check the ship trailer on swtor website, you'll see both Vette, Sith Warrior's companion, and Kim Vaal, Sith Inquisitor's companion, aboard the Fury. The same goes for the Vanguard, the speculated Consular's Trandoshan companion and T7, JK companion, are shown aboard.

Thank you Daniel Erickson, and thank you Darth Hater.

Comment by Hobowan made on June 16th, 2010 at 5:22pm
i thought the same, although i would like to have a comparison. We all know WoW and how big it is. Wo big isw tor? is a planet like a zone in wow or like a continent? HUUUUGE and WAAY smaller and all the bloomy phrases he uses are (sorry to say that) useless because we have not yet seen anything of this proposed hugeness. A mouse is hell of a big animal if you ask a fly about it, an elephant won't agree to that. It all comes down to from where you look at things. We don't know from where daniel erickson is looking yet

Better questions than the 'professionals'.

Ord Mantell question was very well handled and explained by Erickson and the explanation of content not repeasting between factions was fantastic.

Comment by flem1 made on June 16th, 2010 at 6:24pm
Interesting that he mentioned that it would be combats and scenarios that wouldn't be repeated... Originally I think they said NPCs, but I can't imagine huge faction NPCs not having some (though obviously different) presence for both sides.

Comment by Kyle1313t made on June 16th, 2010 at 4:42pm
Now something that I'm wondering is that are there hangars on planets? Or do you just fly over to the planet and land in some random place? Because, if I were a super powerful player, I would just hang out in the hangar and kill anyone that lands. This could probably cause a problem, but I know even if you do have to land in a hanger, BioWare will make sure this doesn't happen.

Comment by Seires made on June 16th, 2010 at 4:51pm
It'll probably be an instanced hangar

Comment by aurenmalo made on June 16th, 2010 at 4:50pm
My guess is that it will be an instanced area. Remember how they were talking about the instanced rooms with the green beam doorway things(you can see it in the old bounty hunter gameplay video). My guess is that you will run through one of those into a hangar and you will see your ship in the hangar.

Comment by Kyle1313t made on June 16th, 2010 at 4:53pm
Yeah, probably. And the Imperial Agent is sounding fun to me. I think it would be cool to go up on top of a high building, and just snipe some from above, while having your companion making sure no one comes up from behind and chucks you off the building.

Companions affecting trinity dynamics makes sense -- pure boring healbot stuff is well left to AI anyway.

Comment by Varteras made on June 16th, 2010 at 5:52pm
What I like about it is if you're someone who enjoys "pure boring healbot stuff" you can do that and let your companion help with other things. Allowing companions to fill gaps in the roles that your group might have because you weren't able to find that healer, or that tank, or that other DPS really helps to alleviate the problem with trinity. Because it's very easy to find four people to group with. It's another story to get a group that consists of tank, healer, and two dps or whatever combination is necessary. I can't even begin to tell you how many nights I spent trying to get into groups on WoW (even after the new LFG system they added) as a DPS player painfully waiting for a tank or healer to jump in.
