Friday Update Preview
by sado
, posted June 25th, 2010 at 12:01 AM
Sean Dahlberg, Star Wars: The Old Republic™ Community Manager, informs the community that tomorrow's update will be a late one:

Just wanted to let everyone know that tomorrow's update will be running late tomorrow. How late? Hard to say at this point but I should have some more info early tomorrow (that is, early my time). I'll update this thread (and the first post) with such information.

That all said, instead of camping the F5 key, I'd suggest following us on the social networks we are a part of since we post the updates there as soon as everything is ready.

UPDATE [11:20AM CDT]: Nothing really new to tell at this time; we do not have an eta on when today's update will be posted. We apologize for this inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.

FINAL UPDATE [6:05PM CDT]: Just to let everyone know, we will be putting up the latest issue of the Blood of the Empire within the hour. We thank you for your patience and understanding and definitely check back in next week.

More from the DevTracker after the jump.

Sean Dahlberg responding to the community on the amount of Developers admiting they will be playing Sith:

We have a fair sized studio here at BioWare Austin and between us and LucasArts, there is a wide variety of people who play the various classes in The Old Republic. Dallas is one individual on the team and a very professional one at that who would not allow his personal opinion to negatively affect the product.

The Republic is definitely well represented within The Old Republic Team. Even while some may see me as a representative of the Sith, I'm a huge fan of the Trooper and Smuggler classes and I even played the Jedi Consular in a variety of the demos (no, not in the G4 demo, though).

The truth of the matter is that each class is actually great for different reasons. The story, the mechanics, the abilities, etc. Each has their own feel and flavor to them. Having played the Jedi Knight and Jedi Consular (I play all the classes but that's not the point of this sentence), it's amazing how different they actually feel when you consider they both start on Tython and are both "Jedi".

Everything said, both sides will be equally represented. For those who played KOTOR, I think they would agree that the light side and dark side paths of the game (to include the endings) were both epic. Quality is a very important thing to us and that is for everything we do in the game: The allegiances, the classes, the mechanics, everything. If we put something in the game, we want it to not only feel like it fits in the game but that it is enjoyable and has a reason to be in the game.

Sean talking about the usual friday update preview:

I would concur with GamewizX. We have not announced what this week's update is and the reason I haven't is because things sometimes change. When I have information for everyone, I'll definitely share it.

All day just to give us a new issue of BotE? Expectations were somehow expecting more. :(

I am wondering if they pushed what ever was suppose to be for day to next week and put up next week's webcomic instead.

I can only cross my fingers they've delayed the update because they're announcing beta
X)

Comment by -Apocalypse- made on June 25th, 2010 at 6:54pm
You're getting your hopes up by calling it beta. What game testing will be is only going to be a shadow of what is typically called "beta".

Comment by Somerled made on June 25th, 2010 at 5:26pm
I bet this update won't happen till late this evening Pacific time.

Comment by Posiden made on June 25th, 2010 at 4:28pm
Sean's comment about the Jedi has me REALLY craving for some solid JC info.

Comment by HarryTruman made on June 25th, 2010 at 4:40pm
Yeah, it's really hard for me not to get my hopes up. I see three possibilities:

1) Technical difficulties, though it seems like that wouldn't imply a huge delay for a professional site like TOR.

2) Legal/marketing reasons, ie: they have to get permission from the higher ups for something in particular.

3) It's a really big update that requires a lot of work, ie: a site redesign, a massive holonet update, etc.

In any case, I don't think it's a Fan Friday. It has to be something at least reasonably meaty. Ideally, I'd like to see them finally revamp the Class Holonet page so all the classes have the same AC layout like the Sith Warrior. This would be a much more involved Friday update than usual, so it's not outside the realm of possibility if things are delayed.

Oh, who am I kidding? It's just going to be a Fan Tuesday.

Don't forget the E3 hangover as well, it takes a weak to fully recover from 3 days of very little sleep and craziness that goes on.

Comment by mustieles made on June 25th, 2010 at 3:24pm
New update on the post. Still no ETA.

Comment by r2d2arm made on June 25th, 2010 at 4:00pm
Yea, update may not even happen. Just have to wait...

Comment by Xavier made on June 25th, 2010 at 3:10pm
The way Sean is talking, it almost sounds like the "powers that be" are debating weather, or not to release a piece of info today, or go with plan B. Maybe I'm reading into it to much. We'll find out soon enough I guess.

Comment by xeridae made on June 25th, 2010 at 2:00pm
They may just be having technical issues. One would think they wouldn't at this point but who knows. The first few Friday updates always went up in the late afternoon. They may be revamping the holonet to include all the E3 info.

Comment by Lugano made on June 25th, 2010 at 1:28pm
Arg! The suspense is killing me! I'll be really disappointed if this is just a normal update after all of this. I think that maybe they were going to announce game testing, but they decided to push it back for whatever reason and now they need to make a new update.

Comment by Chino made on June 25th, 2010 at 1:55pm
It's just a normal update! Don't get your hopes up.

Comment by LordCaduceus made on June 25th, 2010 at 1:27pm
3 races released and still no "Races" section on the holonet? I think that's what they are going to do, Maybe even add another race or two...

Comment by tfganhao made on June 25th, 2010 at 1:50pm
could very well be. If so i'm putting my money on Mon Calamari for republic side.

New comment from Sean - http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?p=3296809#edit3296809
"I would concur with GamewizX. We have not announced what this week's update is and the reason I haven't is because things sometimes change. When I have information for everyone, I'll definitely share it."

Looks like you guys got it! The quote from GamewizX in conjuction with Sean's comment makes me think this will be a normal update, but most likely in response to what has happened this week.

Comment by gstommylee made on June 25th, 2010 at 1:25pm
That is not necessary the case. We could have gotten that game testing has started nothing more but since that was leaked we could be possibly be something more.

Comment by Deliacorgrace made on June 25th, 2010 at 11:02am
I have a sneaking suspicion theup date will be a message saying: We're disappointed in you guys for leaking game testing info. Here's your update" and then a gif of the developers doing a disapproving shake of their heads.

I know, I was just being sarcastic. And yes, I have Facebook and Twitter on my phone. I guess it doesn't read as playfully sarcastic as it sounded in my head.

C'est la vie.

you sir have an avatar which is made of 100% pure win.

Comment by Peterisjustok made on June 25th, 2010 at 10:34am
What do you mean? He doesn't have a Blackhawks avatar...

: D

Comment by Hobowan made on June 25th, 2010 at 10:55am
ah well. He's no bandwagoner at least. I had this avatar long before the flyers even made the playoffs (which already was a miracle)

Comment by Peterisjustok made on June 25th, 2010 at 11:27am
No bandwagon here... Just straight up Chicago Love.

Agreed on the miracle, but the Cup series was just a lot of fun to watch from beginning to end. Flyers played a lot tougher than I thought they would. You have to be proud.

But I digress... Star Wars... MMO... Story...

I wonder if the Game Testing has anything to do with why the update will be so late. :P Too bad he didn't give us a hint as to what the Friday Update will actually be about, inquiring minds want to know!

Comment by mustieles made on June 25th, 2010 at 9:30am
The fact of them not giving us a hint might me a hint in itself of a new and never seen before feature in the update.

Comment by piethief100 made on June 25th, 2010 at 6:54am
We can only hope. It's what I thought when I saw the announcement.

Comment by HarryTruman made on June 25th, 2010 at 1:16am
Hmm... I may be overly optimistic, but if it's a delayed update it might involve a change in site layout stuff, like when they remade the Sith Warrior Holonet entry.

Comment by chronium made on June 25th, 2010 at 7:10am
It's just the E3 hangover that would be the major cause of the delay. Oh and it's the special E3 fan Friday that they never released on top of whatever new info they were going to release today.

Comment by r2d2arm made on June 25th, 2010 at 7:58am
No, it won't be a Fan Friday. The "special" E3 Fan Friday was the E3 article that was constantly being updated throughout E3. Sean even mentioned that's why it was "special," since it was a week-long update.

Comment by Hobowan made on June 25th, 2010 at 9:15am
indeed. they never said that "special" equals "better than others", although we all expected it to mean that.

Comment by chronium made on June 25th, 2010 at 8:57am
I know that's the information but they were going to make a proper Fan Friday page out of it. Not just keep it all in the forums.

never mind I'm being stupid.

Comment by shadowfyre made on June 25th, 2010 at 1:07am
Omg does this mean that we actually WONT know what an update is before it comes out? lol.

Comment by adipokerface made on June 25th, 2010 at 5:02am
The one time i want the leaked info for the friday update too.. Bah no interwebs for me til monday.

Comment by Hobowan made on June 25th, 2010 at 4:35am
It looks like they're reinventing the idea of the friday update. wow!

Comment by Elkesai made on June 25th, 2010 at 3:25am
Holy crap, you may be right!
