E3: General Information Learned

We are back from over an hour and a half playing 6 of the 8 classes in Star Wars: The Old Republic, not including Jedi Knight and Jedi Consular. All official videos are posted on our YouTube channel. Although we will have more specific information about the classes shortly, we first wanted to give you a heads-up on some of our findings after the jump.

Updated: June 30 @ 5:40 PM EST

When you die, you resurrect outside a small med center building in proximity to your bind station. You spawn with all equipment in hand -- no corpse run necessary.
Blaine Christine specifically mentioned PvP acquired armor sets in his presentation.
The group size limit in our demo was four players.
You acquire new skills through class trainers in the main quest hubs.
Class trainers are labeled "Elite."
Side quests did not seem to be class restricted.
You cannot initiate quest dialog if a nearby party member is in combat.
Certain quest givers may be contacted via HoloCom, which works the same as a normal cutscene.
A trade command and Lobby chat channel are available, but upon activating them we received a message that said "This function is not yet implemented."
Chiss and Human characters both had a /dance action available, and the dance was identical for both males and females.
Multiplayer dialog system allows each player to choose their own response, and an automatic dice roll decides the winning choice.
If you are in a group and initiate a quest dialog, the other members in your group have two minutes to reach the conversation point. If they don't make it, you have the option to start the conversation without your groupmates.
For non-instanced quest givers, the NPC doesn't move around much. Instanced quest givers tended to have elaborate cut scenes where they interact with the environment.
Mobs have a leash radius, and some did manage to evade us.
If you right click on an inventory item with a vendor trade window open, the item is sold. Values are in single credits with no fractional amounts.
Auto-run is available and in the usual places of Mouse 3/Numlock.
The taxi system was similar to World of Warcraft's gryphons. You pay a small fee and are transported from Station A to Station B.
The character creation screen was very similar to Dragon Age: Origins
The aggro indicator is blue when there is no aggro, yellow they are aware of you (mouseover status says "ALERTED") but not engaged, and red indicates in combat. The ranges for this varied depending on the type of mob.
For completing quests, you sometimes received items, money, alignment points, and experience points, or any combination therein.
For completing quests in a group, you received "Social Points." We don't know their purpose.
If a quest is instanced you enter a green portal. If you aren't eligible for the quest, the entrance is red.
All classes have a "Revive" ability, a 5s cast time, 10m range, no cooldown ability which can be used on a player or companion. The tooltip did not indicate if the ability is restricted to out of combat use.
You can inspect the gear of other players in your group from any distance, even if they're on a different planet.
You can inspect the gear of all other players in visual proximity. We don't know the maximum range of this.
In our groups the loot rules were "Round Robin" without a dice-rolling mechanic, and the credits looted were split equally among players in the group that were in proximity.
Loot was appropriate for what the mob would carry, such as a droid carrying a gun drops a gun (and often seemingly useless spare parts).
Personal Ships are described as a "base of operations" for the classes, groups, and companions.
Companions are seen in the "hanger," similar to the way that they are in the Mass Effect and KoTOR series.
A Dashade Companion and Human (looks like one of the lightly armored trooper concept art images) are seen in the background during the presentation.
Flytext seen during the gameplay hands on, works like scrolling combat text but more in the way of Borderlands where damage numbers pop out in different directions around the enemy as you damage them as well as yourself.
Preferences allowed for the customization of Flytext in similar ways of Scrolling Combat Text.
Preferences allowed for the adding of action bars, similar to the way they are added in the World of Warcraft default UI.
Bottom right hand corner bar graph is mentioned as "Game Server Delay"
WASD is default in-game

Nice nice nice, even a little map!

I was wondering with Hutta, we know its a starter place for Agent and the Bounty hunter where they get to progress to a certain level - Do you think we'll have zones for planets? Because I'm pretty sure I read/heard a some time ago, a dev mentioning that your character will be able to return to their "home planet" at a higher level. If it is for instancing, leveling, more story for your class or acquiring new equipment. Basically a higher level zone at the same planet.

D'you think we will see this? can you back me up? - because I might be wrong. Im just speculating.

EDIT: Btw, just noticed on the map, that you couldn't determine if you could zoom out, so I might have a point here...

Put it to you this way: at GDC, I saw about 1/4 of the Ord Mantell map that is drawn above, and I couldn't zoom out either. I just saw connecting lines.

Couldnt tell from our gameplay, for now it is all speculation. Have fun thinking of what people at Bioware might be thinking of.

Comment by Eslates made on July 1st, 2010 at 11:29pm
Yeah, Bioware is really promising. I guess at least every starter planet will have different zones, they can always expand further if they feel like y'know.

Cheers for responding.

Awesome recap DH! keep it up.

"Blaine Christine specifically mentioned PvP acquired armor sets in his presentation."

What do you think this means? Looting PVP armor sets off of dead players that are generated by the game & in fact are not from the dead players or gaining renown like in WAR & turning those in to acquire these PVP armor sets?

Ya'll weren't kiddin when you said you recorded everything, amazing.

P.S. That must be the best MS Paint job I've seen yet (the green map)

I'm definitely not Rainman. Definitely. Because I dont wear underpants from Kmart.
We just drew maps into our notebooks and then did what we were able to do to get them on computers.

Glad you love my paint skills, because that is about the extent of my computer imaging skills.

You can tell these are def. starter zones.

"If you are in a group and initiate a quest dialog, the other members in your group have two minutes to reach the conversation point. If they don't make it, you have the option to start the conversation without your groupmates."

So, if a PUG of players A, B & C are in a group - say they have just finished an instance and Player A is sorting bag space at a vendor, B is going to a class person to hand in a personal quest (that was finished in the Flashpoint), and C has found a new quest person all to together...

What happens:

1) if B & C start the process of a cutscene at the same time? Or B is in a cutscene when C starts the new found quest chain?

2) if C starts a new quest, and A & B see you have 2 mins to reach the quest circle, can C straight away SKIP the timer of 2 mins before A & B have even responded? If so, won't it perhaps piss some people off who are on route if they want to see the story/dialogue but an impatient person/group starts without them? Personally, I'd leave any PUG or group that started stuff and didn't even give me a chance to see it play out by skipping...

DH Team
Comment by Zoidberg made on June 30th, 2010 at 7:08pm
1. In a case like that, B will be in his cutscene while C has the option to wait on B. If the 2 min is not long enough he can just walk away from the quest giver if he wants to accept it at the same time as B. Or B can push esc to get out of the conversation NOW and can pick up the conversation later.

2. C can go ahead and do everything on his own. A and B can both come along and pick up the same quest later. (unless it is class specific) They can also just skip waiting right at the start if they know nobody can make it. It is also a way to make sure your dialog is the only option chosen, but it gets rid of some of the group dynamics. Just plan ahead to make sure you are ready to get your group's quests.

Comment by heybarn made on June 30th, 2010 at 8:12pm
Many thanks Z. So for point 2, C gets the quests to kill, say 10 deserters, and as nobody else makes it to the circle (as he just clicked SKIP) the rest of the group don't have that quest? Dialogue scene plays through and C talks alone. But if A & B then go to the circle they could pick up the quest and have the dialogue together and C is just not part of it right? All then have quest and each kill counts towards the group tally?

Yeah, plan ahead indeed. If you are part of a PUG that's skipping lots and not waiting for the whole group then it seems you should just leave and take note who's impatient :-)

Comment by Zoidberg made on July 1st, 2010 at 4:08pm
You are correct.

Comment by HeSleepsInAGrove made on July 8th, 2010 at 9:30pm
1) quick question Zoidberg. What do you mean by "unless it is class specific"? do you mean, say it is a trooper quest, and then the jedi knight runs ahead and does the dialogue, does that mean the Trooper misses out? because that would be especially stupid if it was the Trooper's class quest. Please elaborate.

2) are you saying that if C goes and does the cutscene/dialogue in a flashpoint, the others are left out? or does player A and B still have the ability to enter the conversation afterwards, and just those two would be in it, and it would be just player A and B in convo? It would be upsetting if C could skip, and A and B would not get to see what the cutscene is like, or EVER participate in it...
Please tell me A and B will still experience it, but not at the same time as C is all... EVEN in flashpoints...

Thank you. I read your comments between you and Heybarn, and i just wanted to make sure that i was correct in interpreting it as, "All will experience that cutscene/convo (even if it is flashpoint), but if C does it ahead of them it ONLY means he is in it by himself, and others will STILL be able to experience it."
Am I right? elaborate please and thank you. that question alone prompted me to make an account.

Don't forget that TOR maps can be layered so the size of a planet with a lack of distance can be supplemented by height. Like Coruscant for example there are 2 or 3 confirmed zones on top of each other.

About the building maps, did you get a feel that the size of the building map was consistent with the size of the building on the world map? So, there was at least some consistency between the buildings and the world map?

Comment by Zerak made on June 16th, 2010 at 6:29am
Yeah, I think thatr's for the better, personally, allows for ease to make good characters, while allowing for small adjustments here and there, tho from what we've seen, it'll likely be more extensive.

First off, thank you DH for providing us TOR news. It is greatly appreciated. A lot of goodies :))

I watched the PvE clip on G4 earlier. While combat looked fun. How was the AI?

I hate to use WoW as an example, but I liked the vanilla 5 mans. Was this class Flash Point similar in setup to WoW 5 mans? Was it easier or harder? Is it fair to compare? How was your overall experience?

Thanks again!

Comment by jerlot made on June 15th, 2010 at 11:05pm
Even if DH answers this question, it would totally be unfair to BW to take what ever the answer to be as final. Balance in PVE and PVP is one of the last things developers work on and usualyl not doneuntil closed beta, when they can get a large pool of players that haven't touched the game and balance it all out that way.

Comment by ValiceKohn made on June 15th, 2010 at 9:36pm
Anyone mention the sheer size of Korriban? I mean in the G4 vid, it was massive!! Just the starting little area.

DH Team
Comment by emlaeh made on June 30th, 2010 at 7:35pm
Korriban is hard because there are a bunch of multi-level tombs.

Comment by Varteras made on June 15th, 2010 at 10:15pm
That was one of the things that caught my attention. That place was huge! A lot bigger than what I was expecting. The initial images of Korriban made me think it was just this little pit area around a tomb with a pyramid in the background. I saw that video and my mouth slightly hung open. I was NOT expecting that much area for an origin world.

DH Team
Comment by emlaeh made on June 30th, 2010 at 7:37pm
I think everything I saw so far is huge, but size is perceived by the individual (Sado and I disagree about Ord Mantell, and I didn't have time to go make a second look at that planet during E3).

Comment by xDelta_07x made on June 15th, 2010 at 10:35pm
Yeah I completely agree, I was thinking the same thing. The cliffs just continued up.. amazing.

Actually makes me think of what the will do (or have done) with Coruscant. I bet it will be jaw dropping

Comment by Krisis made on June 15th, 2010 at 9:24pm
Let's not forget: A lot of the things BioWare has planned out for you to play doesn't necessarily make it exactly what we will see on official release. The only thing I'm in question about is the group size. That size of 4 is typical in an MMO but I am guessing you may be able to convert it to a "raid" group so that you can have multiple groups of 4 or 5 altogether, just as WoW.

Thanks for the updates guys. Try to record the G4TV presentation that went on earlier or post it on your site. I watched it and recorded it and I must say, the inside of our player ships are amazing.

All classes have a "Revive" ability: a 5s cast time, 10m range, no cooldown, and it can be done to any player or companion. The tooltip did not indicate if the ability is restricted to out of combat use.

Good notes, also, each class has its own unique ship.

Comment by Varteras made on June 15th, 2010 at 8:34pm
This interview practically confirms space! That's awesome. I am such a happy camper now.

Other things taken from this interview:

Classes will have unique ships. So I guess I was wrong according to this. Ships won't simply be faction specific. It sounds like you'll have choices of ships based on your class.

There will be Open PvP and Instanced PvP.

Raids will likely not be story-driven. They will be something you can do for high-end content. So you don't have to raid to get the story.

The crafting system will be very similar to WoW but with certain things WoW doesn't have to set it apart.

Comment by Danthis made on June 30th, 2010 at 8:50pm
Even if they only ship with one vessel per class, I would bet they add more in xpacs.

Comment by Jatlantis made on June 15th, 2010 at 9:28pm
"

He said the ships will be 'unique' for each class. He didn't say he class would have its own unique ship.

The Knight and the Warrior are seen walking into each ship, and yet the Dashade is seen chilling in the Fury and the Trandoshan compnaion in the vanguard. These companions are SI/Consular companions respectively right?

So each class probably gets something unique out of the ships. Faction specific. IMO.

Comment by Jatlantis made on June 15th, 2010 at 9:33pm
The IGN article that stated something along the lines of 'a smuggler will get more out of a ship than a SI' comes to mind here. Each class will get something different out of a ship, but we'll see.

I can see how the line can be read either way.

Lol, they said nothing about it not being done before launch. Thanks for reaching though.

Comment by Sathure made on June 15th, 2010 at 9:17pm
Did you skip the fist part of the interview? Where he mentions not wanting to talk about things that aren't finalized in case they don't make it into the game.

Comment by Varteras made on June 15th, 2010 at 9:27pm
They don't want to talk about things that aren't finalized so that they don't give bogus information about an aspect of the game that turns out to be different than what they had. If it wasn't in the game at all they would make no mention of it. The fact remains he quite clearly said they are working on it and that it is understood that if you have Star Wars then you have expectations of certain things (implying space). I seriously doubt he would have mentioned working on space at all if there was no intention of getting it in. Not to mention the two comments at last year's E3 of "there will be a space experience" and "space combat? yeah we've got that".

Comment by Sathure made on June 15th, 2010 at 9:34pm
I'm not trying to be a downer and say there will be no space. I want space too! However don't make bogus statements saying it's confirmed when it isn't. I'm not saying that they don't have an intention to get it in I'm arguing that it is in no way confirmed. This is exactly what the interview says:

"As far as space goes we are not talking much about that. We talk about the player ships. Every class will have their player ship. Which is really cool -- kind of their central base for things. That's pretty much where we like to have it because we are actually working right now on some cool stuff for space, and we'd rather talk about it when we get it finalized. If everyone thinks about Star Wars there are always components we have to have. We have ships! We may have other things".

Notice the last statement "We have ships! We may have other things".

Comment by Varteras made on June 15th, 2010 at 10:00pm
I took his last comment as more of a *wink wink* than anything else. I also said "practically confirmed" since we're hanging on every word now. I did not say it was guaranteed though I think most people would disagree with your skepticism on it. That was the absolute biggest indication towards space we've received from Bioware up to this point. So nothing I'm saying is bogus. You're going to take one sentence (we may have other things) and one idea (it's not finalized yet) and claim that those mean more than him saying "we are actually working right now on some cool stuff for space and we'd rather talk about WHEN we get it finalized" in addition to the two quotes I gave from last year's E3.

It seems to me that you're being overly cautious about something that was, again, PRACTICALLY confirmed. How often have they talked about things that aren't finalized yet? Raids, Crafting, PvP... all of that stuff was in the same realm as space at one time. Not finalized and not being talked about. Now we're getting more info on PvP. We know there is crafting. We know there are raids. Despite the fact that we have yet to get any details on either crafting or raids we know they exist. They're not finalized yet either apparently. Do we then assume that they're not in... even though we've been told they are? The same thing applies here. We were told space is being worked on. We were told in the past that space combat/experiences would be in the game. We know little more about raids and crafting than we do about space. Seems those three ideas are in the same realm.

So, if you're going to use the "it's not finalized so it's not confirmed" argument... then let's cut out raids, crafting, and doubtless several other aspects of the game we've been told are being worked on but have seen nothing about yet.

Comment by Sathure made on June 15th, 2010 at 10:11pm
No where did I say if it's not finalized it's not confirmed. What I said is that in no where did he guarantee a space experience. Raid, crafting, PvP? Those are all confirmed. Bioware has specifically come out and said There will be these experience in game. However no where have they explicitly came out and said there will be a space experience in game. No what they did say s that they are currently working on it and would rather not talk about it.

My original statement remains completely true.

Your arguments aren't furthering any points.

The fact is the article only confirms that there MAY be a space experience. Which is exactly what I stated earlier.

Comment by Varteras made on June 15th, 2010 at 10:23pm
Yet you keep avoiding the point that we were told in the past that space would be in the game and we just didn't hear about it for a year until now. You also failed to notice where I pointed out that I said PRACTICALLY confirmed. In other words, I never said it was guaranteed but that article makes it very, very likely. They were working on raids and crafting and PvP and not talking about them either for the longest time. Again, we still know next to nothing about raids yet we keep being told they don't want to talk about them yet... but they said raids exist. We were told last year that space is in the game. We were told just now they're working on it. Guess what... if they're working on it and they've said in the past it exists... then it exists. Just like raids.

Your original statement is only true in your own mind.

I'm not furthering any points because you have apparently refused to not acknowledge most of what I said.

No. The article confirms that they ARE working on a space experience. Not that there MAY be one. You can stick to your own beliefs if you want. Since nothing I say is going to matter to you anyways and you'll just continue to avoid most of what I say.

Comment by Varteras made on June 15th, 2010 at 10:28pm
That last comment came off a little harsh. It was not intended that way and I apologize.

Comment by Sathure made on June 15th, 2010 at 10:46pm
Not a problem just a friendly disagreement.

Back on with argument though. xP

I'm not avoiding it at all. I don't see it's validity. The only reference to the developers mentioning space in game was during a question asked last year. The question lumped PVP, Raids, and all kinds of features such as space into one question and asked if they will be included. Did a developer ever answer "Yes there will be a space experience" no it was answer with a generally "yes we will have those" to a general question. Player Ships on its own could cover the whole space portion of the question. You have a ship and you use it to travel from planet to planet. How doesn't have to specified.

No where have I said that they aren't working on it. Of course they are. They specifically mention that in the interview. But things can get cut. This is exactly why you don't mention or hype unfinnalised content. Otherwise you may end up with disappointed and possibly angry consumers.

Your talking to some one here who designs games for a living. Major content can be cut at any time. It happens more often than most would like to admit. Look at SWG they said nearly the same things during there development phase. Yet space got pushed back to an expansion. Am I saying that it's going to be cut for TOR? Hell no. Do I want it o make it into the game? Hell yes! Is there a chance that it may not make it into the game. Damn right there is!

And until they official come out and say "Yes we have space content and exploration!" i'm going to treat it as a maybe and not as an almost-positive.

Comment by Varteras made on June 16th, 2010 at 1:04am
I see your point. I was even thinking a little while ago how I mentioned PvP, Crafting, and Raids being in that "not finalized, not talking about it" zone for so long. The difference between those three aspects and space combat is that Bioware has been adamant about them being in the game. Space combat, on the other hand, has been tip-toed around from the start and even now continues to linger in the unknown. I will say this though, it is the most positive comment made about space combat since last year. Even if it's not a confirmation, it is a move in a better direction for those of us hoping for it than we've received in a long time. I'll take a step back from my declaration and simply say that space combat is looking a bit more likely now, just not any kind of guarantee.

Comment by Varteras made on June 15th, 2010 at 9:05pm
I didn't see him say anything about it possibly not being done before launch. He literally says they are working on it. How do you claim that to mean him saying they "might" be working on it?

Comment by azarhal made on June 15th, 2010 at 8:50pm
About raid.

Rich's quote: You can do them if you wish. That's the way they're designed. In WoW you have your raids and they are scaled on basically what you're fighting, right? We will have areas like that in our game, scalable to different sized groups.

Notice the question mark. Hee.

The "scaling" is interesting and it actually confirm one of my theories: the game have group "scaling" . Which mean we are not far away from level scaling as well for certain quests.

Comment by Amaranth made on June 15th, 2010 at 9:09pm
Yeah, that was one of the most interesting comments I saw in that article. Certainly seems to point to the possibility of scalable instances, especially with the max group size being only 4.

By any chance did you notice if you could turn on captions for all dialogue instead of just the alien dialogue?

Comment by jerlot made on June 15th, 2010 at 11:13pm
I am quite sure they will have captions for all dialogues. If not that would alienate all deaf players and I am sure there would be a huge uproar.

No videos with Chiss yet? any G4 IA footage?? :o
I think trauma may be CC Ignore, or ignore as in reduction maybe.
Also trauma implies something thats been hurt...like swollen or broken.
In dragon age there was "injuries".
Maybe a system like that.

Hmm, that makes sense. Would be cool to have some way to reduce the chance to be CCed.

Comment by DarthAgonny made on June 15th, 2010 at 10:34pm
easily translated as bash/Stun/root/paralysis/sleep/fear/blindness/freezing resistance, in other words...movement impairing effects.

We saw the Trooper on the CGI resisting lightning stun from malgus.

Otherwise, how could you possibly fight a consular/inquisitor if not by resisting their attacks??

Comment by Zeveron made on June 15th, 2010 at 8:12pm
My first thought was "fire trauma".. Because I found a tube of "Fire Trauma Balm" at work the other day.. Traumas could be DoTs I guess.. Like from Fire attacks (flamethrower/rockets) or electrical attacks, they have a chance to put a dot on you. Trauma Ignore reduces the chance of the DoT to get activated.

Just an idea!

Comment by Lovezombie made on June 15th, 2010 at 8:08pm
Although I think the implementation of the multiplayer dialogue system is a really cool step forward, I'm still a little bit on the fence about it. I'm not sure if I want people (friends or otherwise) to be able to decide how my quest plays out. For side quests it probably wouldn't be that big of a deal because they wouldn't affect your overall character story, but I want to be in complete control of my story quests.

Comment by flem1 made on June 15th, 2010 at 8:20pm
They've already said that class quests are all you.

Comment by sgtsavage made on June 15th, 2010 at 8:19pm
In previous interviews months ago Daniel Ericson said that their are class stories and world stories. For your personal class story, you make all the decisions. People can help you with your quests, but basically you do everything and you create your story. Then there are world stories where it is encouraged for grouping where the point is to not affect your personal story or create any problems where it would cost you down the line because someone like wanted to fry the innocent people while you wanted to let them free. He said they were distinctly different so you should not have much to worry about and should be able to enjoy the multi-convo system for the world quests.

Comment by Vastori made on June 15th, 2010 at 8:03pm
Well with the anticipated one companion per, that's essentially an eight character group.

Comment by Daelda made on June 15th, 2010 at 8:30pm
True. And with a focus on smaller group sizes it makes it both easier to fill a group, as well as it makes it possible for groups that are short a person or two to attempt the content and yet still have a chance at success.

Personally, I like the 4-person group size. It isn't that much smaller than what most MMO players are used to, and yet by being just a little smaller it makes a significant step in the direction of improving the ability to fill groups.

Bioware seems to be making a lot of very smart moves to make grouping more appealing to those that might otherwise go solo. Reducing group size as well as adding in companions to fill group rolls that are lacking - both of which reduce the "LFG/LFM" downtime, makes grouping much more appealing.
