Can we get any details on how the PvP ruleset outside of Warzones will work?

From an interview we heard that the flashpoints will operate like dungeons, and be replayable. We also found out that you get light/dark side points for your own contribution regardless of the groups final decision.

Does this mean that light/dark side points are effectively infinite and farmable? If there are abilities or perks attached to having a certain alignment, can we effectively change it at any time? Would we be able to go through the class story quests stabbing orphans and still finish with a light side alignment because we ran a flashpoint a dozen times to balance it out?

This seems unlikely to me, so do we only get alignment points the first time we do a flashpoint?

What are DH's speculations about the total number of races that will be available, and which ones?

Has there been any indication thus far that BioWare will adopt more of a Star Wars style naming convention for characters, or will they be sticking with the usual MMO style naming conventions do you think?
(in other words... will we see alot of names with apostrophies in them, or 3 part names ie: Obi Won Kinobi, or will it be more of the usual naming conventions we're used to from other MMOs?)

Feel silly for even asking this far away from release. I realize it's not a make or break item at this stage of development, but you'd be surprised how many folks in my circle of friends have this and similar "role-playing" type questions at the forefront of their thinking right now...

Greetings all !! My questions would be this. Seeing how Bioware seems to time all their new reveals strategicly and adds layer on top of another layer to expand the game information, in retrospect to ships and ship combat, will groups of players be able to control different aspects of the ship combat? ie: A player to pilot, a player(s) to be gunner, communications, shields ect. and will it be controlled when you want to enter combat. (ie: flag yourself to PvP ship combat)

More excited about the space stuff because I didn't get to fully enjoy Jump to Lightspeed during my SWG tenure. The computer I had at the time couldn't handle the graphics. :)

Indifferent on the multiplayer. If nothing else, the implementation of the group encounters looks very interesting and very engaging.

humm already plenty of good questions have been posted.

I just got one.. it's regarding the Beta and the actual test invitations.
Living in Europe, I have the idea that the actual test invitations are not for us but mainly reserved to the North America players/members.
For different reasons I would understand that but I just would like to know if it's the case or not.
I tend to prefer to know the truth rather than checking my mails on a daily basis if there is no hope :)

Hence in general, when Dev are talking about test, close or open beta, are the invitations sent to North America members + European ones as well ?? or should we consider that no European members will receive any invit until there is clearly a Beta for the European area servers/members ?

Sorry for my long post/question

Comment by greengorila5 made on July 29th, 2010 at 5:51pm
They said only in north america for now as the servers are in austin texas or something like that so they are waiting until they set up there proper european servers before sending out invites as connecting to an american server from europe is not fun and there is a lot of lag....

Comment by adipokerface made on July 29th, 2010 at 3:44am
I think they said only North American testing for now somewhere. Don't see why they shouldn't test in europe as well though, at least for testing the servers themselves.

Question for the DH team (going off of Hobowan's post below):

When you guys have spent time with the game, have you noticed the animation to be clunky? Has it improved over the course of your play time? And if it is pretty clean, do you feel it will be even more polished by release?

Comment by Caliber made on July 28th, 2010 at 8:44am
Space combat was a nice surprise, but I'm indifferent towards it. If it's fun, it will be a great way to catch a break from normal raiding/PvP. If not, just more time to focus on the ground game.

The multiplayer video didn't change my excitement level, but it was nice to see the group dynamics in action. The video mostly made me want more mechanics-related information. While it's nice to learn about features, I want to dive into the guts of the game: stats, talents, skills, possible builds, gear differences, ideal companion combinations, etc. It's great if the car looks nice and has all the frills, but what matters is under the hood.

Comment by Loekii made on July 28th, 2010 at 11:39pm
Felt the same about Space Combat.

The group demo actually was disappointing to me, but they did say it was intentionally basic for the presentation. Hope future group demos are much more indepth and advanced.

Comment by OneSoul1982 made on July 28th, 2010 at 8:36am
Had a question about the missions. Did you guys notice if the missions you got to demo scaled to your own toon level? How was the difficulty of getting from A to B?

Comment by eria made on July 28th, 2010 at 5:26am
The announcement of space combat has not changed my excitement level at all. While I think player ships are a great idea, basically giving players housing and a form of travel, space combat I feel just won't add a whole lot for me. I will reserve my opinion on it when we see more information. I do know if it's anything like Jump To Lightspeed was, I will most likely skip that part of TOR.

As for the multi-player demo, I put less. I really guess no one can or is willing to get away from the tired and worn out PvE model of combat. They made a really poor choice of showing the perspective from the JC point of view. I would have much rather seen chaos on the screen, getting a real feel for what combat may be like...not just a guy casting a heal every so often, mostly being used as a camera man to record the video. Their whole "heroic" combat isn't anything special, and it's nothing new. The fight they showed was exactly how some boss fights in that other game play out...and I guess if they want to hit the jackpot with this game, they need to go that route. Sugar coat it however you will, but it's the same ol' combat we've always seen. The only upside is companions...now they can be the heal bots, and the rest of us can have fun wacking away on some robot with light sabers.

With the announcement of player controlled ships and ship-to-ship combat, I wonder if they'll introduce more ship classes. The player ships previously announced are all light freighter types (more or less), Ebon Hawk sized craft. Will they include smaller fighters, bombers and larger capital ships with regards to space combat?

Comment by Granados made on July 28th, 2010 at 4:41am
ok, I would like to know.

What do we really know about Cross-faction communication? I mean, I've only played wow but I heard SWG had it and others mmos as well.

Comment by adipokerface made on July 28th, 2010 at 2:41am
I was indifferent about space combat just because i knew it was going to be in there anyway so it felt more like a confirmation than news.
However the E3 demo got me excited just because any new gameplay footage makes me go squeeeeeeeeee!!

Comment by LegoBlock made on July 28th, 2010 at 2:19am
The Space Combat announcement caught me completely by suprise. I wasn't expecting anything like this to be implemented from the start, but maybe as an expansion pack somewhere down the line.

Comment by greengorila5 made on July 29th, 2010 at 5:59pm
They stated numerous times that if space combat wasnt in at the beginning it wont be in at all, its in at the beginning though so we dont have to worry about that :P

Comment by Hobowan made on July 28th, 2010 at 1:48am
Space combat: I'm surprised that they announced it because I do not think Bioware would implement a unpolished, un-fleshed out version of space combat. So the announcement made me happy because we can be sure that if they bring something, it's going to be the real deal.

Multiplayer demo: The gameplay itsself was ok, it's what we should expect. It seems to build upon the experience of WoW, which worked and with which most of the players will be familiar with. The problem I had was the state some of the animations still are in. The fact that the point of view was the jedi consular's one, who ran a lot while his torso didn't move a bit, amplified this. They have to work on those animations, they really aren't looking like the rest of the game: close to release

Comment by Peterisjustok made on July 28th, 2010 at 11:08am
I agree with the animation issues. Right now it is sticking out just enough for you to notice something is off. Like they were saying with music... character movement and animation should never pull focus. Instead if someone were to ask you about it at the end of the game, you would hope the response would be, "It must have been great, I didn't even really notice it."

Comment by aborath made on July 27th, 2010 at 10:04pm
I expect space combat to be an interesting, but entirely optional, aspect of the game. Much like PvP. Its addition doesn't change my opinion of the game at this point. I'll have to see how it's implemented.

Question for DH: how do you feel about the inability to switch factions in TOR? To me, this just seems like an artificial limitation on immersion. There is no reason why a Bounty Hunter could not be employed by a pragmatic republic official; the Sith Agent could have rebel sympathies; a Jedi Knight could fall, etc. Making faction lines less cut-and-dry would make the world much more vibrant and believable.

Comment by FarScholar made on July 28th, 2010 at 5:33am
In fact they answered why they prevented the faction switch during the panel.
It's not that it couldn't have a story justification, it's because it would have added years of development.

Comment by Deidare made on July 27th, 2010 at 10:48pm
Its an MMO, thats my reason for not being able to switch factions. Simple as that.

As always when BioWare reveals information it creates more questions than answers.

The Space Combat announce is no different than when they saying things like "We will have raids" or "We will have crafting". When you have no concrete details on something its hard to get excited or disappointed about it.

Out with redundant questions, in with the new I say! That's how DH handles their business supposedly anyway. Hopefully that is.. Moving on, ello DH! Krisis here for another wonderful q&a fiesta. I have tons of questions but only one shines out amongst the rest with such detail, organization, and lucidity. With that said, here comes the billion-credit question, so my friend Jet Nebula provides us with.....Actually it's pretty simple. I refuse to be that creative this time around.

Will we see the main characters (or any characters at all) from the novels (Star Wars: The Old Republic: Fatal Alliance, and Star Wars: The Old Republic: Deceived) that have been released and/or are yet to be?

Can you provide us with a 100% confirmed list of those characters down to a speculative guesstimate organized by the one and only DH crew of characters you think will make it into the game?

Thanks a'bunchez!

Comment by Daelda made on July 27th, 2010 at 8:54pm
I voted "no change" on both questions because I expected both of those things. The multi-player was about what I expected - solid, sticking close to the MMO standards, but with some tweaks that make it just different enough to be interesting. As to the space combat - of course that was going to be there! Bioware said that SWG's biggest mistake with JTL was that space combat wasn't in the game from the beginning - that it was too big of a jump and thus created this huge gap between players. You had to include it from the beginning and introduce players to it slowly, in small steps, so that it becomes a part of the whole experience. I would have been *shocked* if TOR had not included some sort of space combat at launch.

Comment by Whiteriver made on July 27th, 2010 at 8:40pm
In terms of how many players, what is the expected raid size going to be? And will there be multiple difficulty levels?

Comment by Savich made on July 27th, 2010 at 7:45pm
With most mmo's doing microtransactions now a days and with EA's partnering with Live Gamer, do you think TOR is headed down that path?

Comment by Keegan-Vol made on July 29th, 2010 at 7:57pm
I really hope not. While i will not play a game with this as a feature, microtransactions seem to be the future. Microtransaction seed the instant gratification for the power gamer types and those with the biggest credit cards can afford all the "shinies" best gear, heal pots (D&D online) available in the middle of combat, I have heard of some microtransaction games that have pop ups that "temp" you to buy better stuff (unsure if that is true). It would seem that it may cause game balance issues as well.
Those that can afford the best will and those that cant afford the best will desire that which they cant aquire, (and likely buy it anyway knowing they cant afford it) so I as well wont play ToR if it is MT based. Thanks for bringing the point up Savich!!

Comment by ArcherAvatar made on July 28th, 2010 at 2:27pm
/fingerpoint @ Savich
"Blasphemer!"

Everytime I even hear someone talking about micro-transactions in connection with any MMO ... I ... just want to kill puppies and kittens... YOUR puppies and kittens!

It's not possible to be more hyped for a game than I am for TOR... but if they base it's finances on MTs I simply won't even buy it... I will cry alot while sitting alone in the rain, but I WON'T buy a game based on MTs... ever.

While I'm interested in both aspects queried, I voted that my position is unchanged because at present there just isn't enough concrete facts to sway me to either side. I do look forward to PC Gamer's magazine article and maybe at that point I might jump for joy a little depending on what information is presented.

Comment by Maximouse made on July 27th, 2010 at 6:25pm
Especially after DH's experiences at Comiccon, I'm very interested to hear you people's opinions on server sizes in ToR. I have no doubt they won't be "tiny", but will they be incredibly vast (EVE springs to mind, but I really don't think one server is feasible in a Star Wars environment) or a more community-oriented size, like WoW's servers? I realize 20,000 people on a server is large, but when you want to find people with very similar interests to you and you spend enough time on one server in WoW, you get to know guilds and groups very well.

Hello Team,
I'm a console kinda guy that's going to be playing in a PC MMOer's world. As such, I loathe the keyboard as a controller. Which leads me to my question. Since this will be a game for Windows it'll have Xbox 360 controller support. In your experience, if any of you ever played an MMO with a controller (I hear it's pretty rare for an MMOer to do so), how customizable, typically, is the key-mapping? If I could bring up a radial menu like Mass Effect or Dragon Age I think it would open enough button options to let TOR be playable that way. I know that would be a Bioware design decision, but given that they're going above and beyond to appeal to nearly everyone out there, including console gamers, how likely do you think they'd spend time polishing such a system, versus adding it as a required afterthought for Windows?
Thanks Guys, and Gals,
Night_Stryker

Comment by Loekii made on July 30th, 2010 at 1:16am
Do a google search for Switchblade and Xbox 360 controllers, and you should get a couple of examples of how it works.

Ultimately it is up to what works the best for you ergonomically. As you pointed out, it is like 'throwing left handed' (which is why some profess it is impossible, impractical, etc), but if you are more comfortable with Xbox controllers than keyboard devices (ie you are 'left handed'), you might find actually works better for you.

Comment by Caliber made on July 28th, 2010 at 12:45pm
I've argued extensively in favor of this on the TOR forums before I stopped posting there. It's not difficult to do, but since Emlaeh is going to tackle the question, I'll leave it to her.

I use a keyboard and mouse for MMOs (as my control preference depends entirely upon the game's platform), but if others want to use a controller, why should I care? It does not affect me at all.

Comment by Peterisjustok made on July 28th, 2010 at 11:01am
@Night_Stryker

Hey brother, I totally agree with you. I think it would be great if Bioware could implement a controller option for other players. Don't let these guys give you too much crap. Different strokes for different folks. If they prefer a keyboard and mouse that's there thing.

I really enjoy an FPS with a controller (especially the 360). And Mass Effect 2's radial menus were really fun to play with, while having specific abilities mapped to the controller. I've never played and MMO with a controller, but I could see the perks. My biggest problem in an MM0 is hitting the wrong hot key (usually above on the numbers) over and over again. So a controller could be a way to fix that.

Though you might not be able to map everything to a controller and its radial menus, all the important things could be mapped there and you could use it in conjunction with a keyboard. Targeting and switching targets could be another problem.

No doubt it would be a huge undertaking on Bioware's part. So they might not want to do it so as not to delay the game or steal resources from other development areas. But it's a valid thought definitely. Thanks for posing the question.

PS- Mac people will be fine. There is always Bootcamp... (he says begrudgingly from his windows partition he uses for work.)

Comment by Peterisjustok made on July 28th, 2010 at 2:00pm
PPS- What good would space combat be without a good old fashioned Joystick. Remember when they used to bundle them with the original Tie Fighter game?

Comment by Perkunas made on July 28th, 2010 at 11:37am
You own a Mac... You don't count as a gamer...

Comment by Peterisjustok made on July 28th, 2010 at 1:55pm
Fair enough. A lot people who will be playing this game probably won't consider themselves "gamers", so why not hone in on there opinions. (Such as making an outlet for another type of controller, so were not fumbling around with a keyboard and mouse that wasn't originally designed to play games with).

I will say I currently don't play any video games on my windows partition. I'm pretty satisfied with the EA and Steam related game that launch on mac.

Comment by Perkunas made on July 28th, 2010 at 12:51am
Playing an MMO/RTS/FPS with a controller is like trying to play Operation with BBQ tongs....

Comment by Keegan-Vol made on July 29th, 2010 at 8:04pm
I use a G13 as well (worth the extra bucks) and a Razer Diamondback G3 Mouse!! I hardly ever touch that filthy keyboard anymore! :)

Comment by Perkunas made on July 28th, 2010 at 3:16pm
Rocked a Nostromo speed pad for Wolfie ET back in the day. That's as far as I'd be willing to transition though. My binds are 1-8, Shift+ 1-8, E/Q, Shift+E/Q, R/F/C, Shift+R/F/C, B/V, Shift+B/V, G1-G-6. I played a healer as well and I had all sorts of key binds+mouse clicks set to different heals.

Point being, on a standard X-box controller would you really want to type in the damn "Konami Code" just so you could attempt to cast your lightning drain on them? All the while they are circle strafing you and picking you apart. A controller could work on a PVE server, but you'd be slaughtered in PVP.

Fact remains you need a mouse for those sorts of games if you want to compete. They tried back in the days of Quake 3 to allow the controller jockeys on Dreamcast to go head-to-head with us PC boys with a cross-platform map pack. They never stood a chance.

Comment by Caliber made on July 28th, 2010 at 12:54pm
I had the original N52. They seemed to have fixed the problems I had: key stiffness/sticking and adjustable palm rest. Otherwise, that thing worked pretty well for raid healing.

Question - Why do you think we have had next to nothing regarding information about droids in general? Considering they are such a big part of the Star Wars universe, we've had a few vague mentions and the two bio's - but nothing else, so as whether they'll be companions, what they can be used for (protocol droids, repair/hacking, or maybe something to do with crafting etc). I am curious!

Comment by Gifflen made on July 27th, 2010 at 5:37pm
I see one person( at the time of this comment) is less excited for the game now that they announced space combat. Was hoping to get a clarification as to why you would be turned off by additional game features. I understand the possibility of the game spreading itself to thin but based on what we've seen in my opinion that is clearly not the case. I guess I was just curious as to how it was a detraction.

Comment by Bencor made on July 27th, 2010 at 11:04pm
I voted "No Change" on this one, but i can see how one could vote "Less". They are going for completionisim i suppose, which is great, but i cant help but feel like this will be a slightly tacky minigame like swoopbike racing for KOTOR. If you provide a second rate bit of gaming in the middle of a polished experience it brings the whole thing down. There is also the terrifying MMO/advancement/lewt type problem of making the shitty minigame value for time and simultaneously not making it essential to play if you consider it bollocks. I played to death the swoopbike bits in KOTOR (for cash, XP and to push storylines), but they were really rather crap. Pazzak was entrancing (though it had ingrained problems and lacked variety) and i would prefer this as a minigame to a 2nd rate flight sim. If they make it deep, worthwhile and awesome of course all is forgiven-i just wouldent bet on it from what they have said so far. It really sounds like a swoopbike race in which you may be able to control the y-dimension. I really hope its good, but i think its a risky proposition-the risk based in both smart resource usage, and in percieved overall game playability and quality.

Comment by Elkesai made on July 27th, 2010 at 7:01pm
Perhaps in that the attention on the development of space combat might be focused elsewhere. A sort of "trying to cover too many bases" type of thing. I am indifferent, but that might be a reason someone would be less excited since it was announced.

Comment by Dessel made on July 27th, 2010 at 5:25pm
I havent seen mention of this anywhere i have looked. As far as character creation how many character slots are we allowed to have on one account. Will you be able to be aligned with either faction on one account with multiple characters? Since there are so many character classes to play and the emphisis to date has been on story lines. I would like to be able to play all of the classes through but do not wish to have 2 accounts one for The Empire one for The Republic

We have a bit of a discussion going on over at our guilds forums about ship names and what not. So my question to the DH crew is this: If you are allowed to name your ship, what would you name it?

Personally, I'll probably name mine Manson after the great Charles.

It would be nice if you would add "no change" to the first poll. I find that space combat has not positively or negatively impacted my excitement for the game as it was not an aspect of the universe that I found interest in. I would assume some people might have the same opinions about the multiplayer video.

I'm missing the "unchanged" option: My opinion has remained unchanged - I will grab SW:TOR on release. The only thing that can hold me back is some ridiculously expensive payment model.

You mean Kohr Ah. Technically they are the same species but I don't want my avatar giving off the impression that I am in favor of space alien politicians.

...only about 4 people in the world will get that joke...
